Apr 6, 2015 - Oscar Scherer state park

We wanted to go to a Geocaching Event at Lake Manatee state park over the weekend , but we wanted to head out early. We wanted to stop over at Oscar Scherer State Park on the way to Lake Manatee for a few extra fun days before the event. We like to go into town for geocaching one day and then the trails in the park one day for geocaching. We had fun on the trails , got to find a log in a log. We got to walk about six miles of fun for the day and then the next day went into town for some fun. One of the caches was A sign of death , it turned...

Nov 14, 2012 - Florida Beaches the best in the states

I have spent the last week going to Sarasota Beach, Siesta Key Beach and Casperan Beach in Venice. The beaches are wonderful. I watched a dozen pelicans skimming above the waves looking for lunch. Saw Manta Rays frolicking in the shallow surf and walked for hours on sugar sand. What a way to spend the winter. I did find some new shells and some sharks teeth at Casperan Beach. The water was a little cool to start with but not half as cold as the water I grew up swimming in. Hope that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. We are heading...

Nov 8, 2012 - Osprey

We caught great weather today for our travels around Sarasota County. Bright blue sky and temps pushing 70° with just enough breeze to make long sleeves feel good. We got on the road just about 11:00 after a short stop at the Nature Center to mooch some free Wi-Fi to make some plans for today. We ended up heading north on US 41 for a ways and then west to Siesta Key, home of the #1 rated beach in the United States – at least that’s what the signs along the road say. And it is nice – the sand is super fine; kind of like powdered sugar and...

Nov 7, 2012 - Osprey

Nope. We’re not in Lakeland. And nope, I’m not happy with the election results. Almost everybody that I voted for lost – some of which were surprises, some not so much. So this morning started out a little depressing, but we left the beach and headed north on US 41 for a little over 2½ stop-and-go hours to Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey which is a bit south of Sarasota. Michele’s boss had sent her an email and told her about some things to do in this area so we figured we would check it out for a couple days. The trip; other than the...

Nov 6, 2012 - Enjoying Oscar Scherer State Park Area

The winter has started in southern Florida. Days in the high 70's and low 80's, humidity low (usually around 35%) and blue skies. What else can you ask from winter. We arrived at Oscar Scherer State Park on Thursday. Sites are really deep and wide. You can't even see the RVs in the next site. We like Oscar Scherer because it is so close to Venice. On Sat, we went to the 25th Annual Arts Festival in Venice. A beautiful day and so many wonderful artists. All of the pottery, wood carvings, paintings, and my favorite which is the art deco...

Jan 8, 2010 - Historic Spanish Point at Osprey, Florida

On Friday, January 8th our Boat Club, the Merry Mariners of Cape Coral, FL made a "day trip" land excursion to Historic Spanish Point in Osprey, FL. In 1867 the Webb family left New York to escape the harsh winters, and following a tip from a Spanish trader they met in Key West they arrived at this spit of land extending into the bay. They named their new homestead Spanish Point, a tribute to their friendly tipster. Over the next 40 years the family farmed citrus (grafting the native sour orange trees in the area to produce sweeter fruit)...

Nov 17, 2009 - Osprey, FL (near Venice)

At Oscar Scherer State Park, for 4 nights, in Osprey, FL....between Sarasota and Venice. 11/20/09 OK....we moved out of there this morning and are now set up at our home for the winter, Royal Coachman RV Resort. That was a nice state park with miles of walking trails for nature watching. I got out a couple mornings a wandered around. Nice trails. Saw lots of jumping fish which I think are mullet..but not sure. Also saw a yellow crowned night heron which was a new one for me. There was a decent beach area on a tiny "lake". Posted signs would...

May 15, 2009 - Osprey, Florida 5/15-16

Friday, May 15 On the road again, 98/19 south towards Sarasota. It was a really long day. I don't like them that long, even though we stopped and I had lunch in the home. Took a few breaks and arrived in Oscar Scherer State Park around 7:00. We set up camp and stayed home this evening. Trying to catch up on our rest. Saturday, May 16 Drove back to Sarasota to explore the area. We also brought our laundry with us. Found a laundry mat and finished that job, while John found somewhere to get the car washed. They don't allow you to wash your...

Nov 14, 2007 - Oscar Scherer State Park

Oscar Scherer state park is a small, nice park just off the state road 41 in Osprey, Florida. All parks in the state of florida are great for camping and trail walking during the winter season. Unless you live in florida don't camp during the summer time or you may just burn up and not a thing will be seen but a burnt heap of bones. Summer time is great if you camp on the water or by some lake source, this way you get a breeze. I have lived here since 1963 and love every hot minute of it. Florida camping during the winter month is what I...
