Jul 8, 2019 - Float Time On The Spring Run

This summer was not going up north on a summer vacation, it was summer vacation in Florida. We wanted to hit all the state parks in Florida that has camping and of course a place to float, swim in the cool water of the springs. We did about eight state parks with springs and camping for our summer trip. Blue Springs near Orange City , Florida has all that we wanted. It had camp ground for our trailer and a very nice swim area to wade , but also a float run that would take you about a 1/2 hours to float down the run to the exit point. Then it...

Jan 29, 2019 - Blue Springs State Park

Today we had another service appointment to repair the alternator in our motor home engine, which still is not working properly. On the drive to and from Tampa it cycled on and off rather than running full time and left us with depleted batteries. The forecast was great and we wanted to give the techs enough time to get the job done, so we planned a field trip to Blue Springs State Park, about an hour's drive northwest. We'd been there once before and had fond memories of this special spot where you can actually watch herds of manatees...

Feb 9, 2015 - it depends on your state of mind

Manatee are huge blobby looking creatures that float around in the water eating green stuff. Because of their close encounters with boats, they are endangered. Otherwise, they have no real predators except us, especially once they are full grown when they can weigh over a ton. They are very vulnerable to water temperature so this time of year the ocean is much too cold for them, but the 104 million gallons of 73º water pouring out of the Blue Springs into the St. John River every day is just right. The manatee hang around here until the...

Dec 31 A good day today. We walked the boardwalk again today looking at the manatees. We were able to get some pictures of them. It's hard to get pictures because of the glare off the water. Later in the day Kylie came over and we went geocaching with her on our bicycles. We were able to find two geocaches and rode the bikes about 2.5 miles in total. When Kylie returned to her campsite she was very excited and had her mother download the app for geocaching befor the day was over. I took a bike ride down to the river and watched a man have a...

December 30th We're at Lake Louisa State Park this morning and we're heading to Blue Spring State Park in Orange City Fla. The weather is cloudy with a little drizzle. The trip to Orange City was uneventful until we arrived at the entrance to the park. There are many manatees that come to the spring this time of year and the people come to see them. The park is crowded. After we set up camp we took a walk down by the spring and Sally counted about 100 manatees in the quarter to half mile the board walk bordered the river. Two kids, Kylie...

Sep 12, 2013 - Orange City Florida

We left Myrtle Beach yesterday on a beautiful morning, and headed out. We were not sure of where we would spend the night but we have adopted the policy of no reservations. The reason for that is once you get there and have money deposited your pretty much stuck and if it looks like an rv park from "Deliverance" your gonna squeal like a pig rofl. Drove down 17 to Charleston SC with the intent of seeing the place and wound up waving at it as we went by, got derailed a bit by the GPS's (that's right two of them) and headed for Savannah...

We went for a scenic drive to Tavaras. Lots of lakes connected by a river or canals. Mostly flat land with some farming. Stopped at a park along the St. John River, watched the boaters, fishermen and wildlife. Relaxed around the trailer and went to the hot tub after supper.

Nov 24, 2011 - Orange City, Florida

We stopped in Orange City because Tom and Candice Nile lived nearby. They are the couple that bought our fist trailer. Also living nearby is Rich and Joan and they were home, not traveling. We got together and had happy hour and then we went out to dinner. The next night Rich and Joan invited us over to their house for dinner. We had a pretty happy hour followed by a great dinner. They even lent us luggage for the cruise.

Nov 23, 2011 - Daytona Beach

Drove to Daytona Beach. The race track is being set up for a car show so security let us in we stood on the race track and chatted with a security guy. Went to Johnny Rockets on the beach for lunch, noticed a tent set up on the beach and from where we were it looked like they were ice skating? We walked over to see, and for $10 people were renting skates and skating in shorts and tee shirts. Toured a chocolate factory, one of the people on our tour wondered why there was no women working there only young men. Most of the staff is from a...

Nov 21, 2011 - Orange City, Florida

We took a scenic route along the St. John River, the largest in Florida, swamplands change into fields of vegetables and orange groves. Some of the fields had black tarps covering them like ginseng fields at Lillooet. We are staying at Orange City RV Resort for seven days, busy park with hot tub and pools. Several people had suggested that you want to have a place and stay until after the Thanksgiving weekend so this was a central place in north eastern Florida. Drove out to Blue Springs State Park to see the manatees, a hot spring feeds...

On The Road 2011

Nov 1, 2010 - Orange City, Florida

Back in Florida we have a stop over at the Blue Springs state park. Its located on a branch of the St Johns River but its main attraction is its seasonal wildlife. Manatees, or sea cows call this place their winter home. They thrive in warm water and through the winter this part of the river is kept at a constant 72 degrees by a spring which provides the warm, clear water the Manatees love. They usually arrive around the middle of November as the surrounding waters cool so we were just a bit too early to enjoy that spectacle but we were...
