Dec 9, 2017 - Out of the back woods

12/02/2017 made it to Salt Springs Recreation Area off Highway 19 in the Ocala National Forest at about 2 pm today. We had nice weather for traveling and traffic was not bad at all. We got backed into our site with no problem and got everything leveled and hooked up. Our friends from VT (Jan and Cary) live almost across the road at Salt Springs Village and they invited us over for a lasagna dinner. We quickly found out cell service here is spotty to non existent. Dinner was out of this world awesome good! After a nice visit we returned to...

Mar 5, 2012 - Saltspring - Ocala National Forest

Swimming in the spring was refreshing after the unseasonably hot day yesterday. The fish and blue crab must really hate all the visitors splashing around in their pool. We packed up the car and drove round to the front desk so I could check out. The lady on reception had a wickid hair do, she had it all pulled back except for the fringe...

Apr 27, 2007 - Ocala National Forest, Florida

Our friends Jim & Shirley McGehee joined us for a trip to Ocala National Forest. Well, okay, they were showing us around their stomping grounds. We stayed in two campgrounds -- Salt Springs Recreation area, and Silver River State Park. Both were very nice, but Salt Springs was my favorite. The highlight at Salt Springs was obviously the Salt Spring itself. As it's name implies, it produces salt water, not fresh. It empties into the St. Johns River, and is inhabited by blue crabs. Best of all, a family of otters feeds on the crabs, and they...
