Jan 3, 2018 - New Year, New Travels
Remember Mega Winter Storm Grayson? It came along and froze the South East States. We departed Augusta, GA about 9:30 a.m. traveling south on US Hwy 25 toward I-16. The outside temperature was 28 degrees, no snow or ice, just cold. By the time we got to I-16 and made the turn to the east toward Savannah it was snowing real hard. Somewhere in the next 15 miles we made the decision to get off the freeway and huddle. Dave contacted a Sheriff’s deputy who was sitting in his patrol truck making out reports. Dave asked the nice deputy where there...Jump to full entry
Jan 25, 2015 - Heading Home Early
Our plan today was to drive to the Mayport Navy base just east of Jacksonville, FL and stay for eight days while resting up and touring sights such as St. Augustine. However, best laid plans and all that - I woke up with a scratchy throat which got progressively worse as we drove. I had been taking a daily Claritan, so I didn't think it was allergies, but I didn't have nasal congestion like a cold. When we got to the base, I was feeling pretty bad, looked up the weather conditions and saw there was a clear weather window where we could...Jump to full entry
Nov 17, 2014 - What has happened to my hair?
Florida has turned my hair into a fizzy mess! I was not prepared for this! It's the humidity I guess. Now I know why they sell that "fizz ease" stuff for your hair, and I think I need to get some! In the meantime I guess I'll just wear a ponytail and try to control it? Fred the flamingo is sitting on the dashboard, glad to be in Florida finally! He is waiting and hoping to find his true love (a pink flamingo) in Key West. There have been no flamingo sightings here yet, But we have seen a few Pelican's. But Fred is accepting no substitutes!...Jump to full entry
Nov 14, 2014 - Finally in Florida!
This morning we left our nice campground in Georgia on our way to Florida. It was quite chilly at the campground, only about 40 degrees, which doesn't seem bad compared to what most of you are experiencing. We have been very blessed, and have escaped most of the bad weather on this trip. It seems we either just missed it when we arrived or got out of dodge before it hit. Yesterday we finished up our trip to Savannah and caught a few of the sights we had missed the day before. We took the trolley tour again, as we found that this was the...Jump to full entry
Aug 24, 2014 - Back to the Roost...Pelican's Roost, NAVSTA Mayport FL
Last stop of the trip is the same as our first - arrived back at Mayport, Florida where our trip began almost 3 months ago. Looking forward to spending time with our Jacksonville friends and former neighbors before heading home to Melbourne. Mayport is always windy along the jetties, and our 1st night here was no exception - winds gusting up to 35 mph all evening with some pretty heavy rains which actually lulled me to sleep. Looks to be another windy day here, but then clear skies for the Labor Day weekend. For those who plan to be on the...Jump to full entry
May 29, 2014 - Melbourne to Mayport - The Adventure Begins
Greetings from Pelican's Roost, Naval Station Mayport. Our trip north and first stop begins here as usual, except we're missing all our "cruise" buddies that normally gather - many of them are touring the west coast, but we hope to see them all around Labor Day. Our first day proved exciting to see the arrival of a Peruvian Navy ship which rendered honors upon entering the basin here. First time I've seen the event, so it was something to file away in the memory bank. Another highlight was to be able to see USS NEW YORK (LPD-21) in port. A...Jump to full entry
Dec 10, 2013 - First Stop in Florida
Days 275 - 281 of The Big Trip The drive, on December 4, was 173 miles, about twice as far as we've been driving on our travel days. I don't know why I planned it that way, but it was a good day. We drove most of it on US17 and then got on I-95 somewhere north of the Florida border. The destination was the Mayport Naval Station, where they have a wonderful RV Park right on the St. Johns River and we had spaces reserved overlooking the water. We were parked at Mayport Naval Station by mid-afternoon. Clark got set up and yelled at me to look...Jump to full entry
May 20, 2013 - Moored spot 11 @ Pelican Roost!
After 3100 miles we have come to rest at our last and longest stop at Pelican Roost, Naval Station Mayport. We'll be joining up with a large group of friends to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend, and looking forward to relaxing and reminiscing over our last 1 1/2 months on the road. Two more weeks then home to recharge the coach for the next trip. Pelican Roost is one of our favorite spots - how can you not like looking out over the jetties with ships of the greatest Navy in the world arriving and departing the harbor, with dozens of...Jump to full entry
Apr 24, 2013 - Mayport, FL (Jacksonville)
4/24/13, Wednesday After saying goodbye to a few new friends we made at Patrick AFB, we hit the road for Mayport, FL, just outside Jacksonville, about 10 miles or so from the Georgia border. We are staying at the Mayport Naval Station (Pelican Roost RV Park) which is at the mouth of the St. Johns River. We look out onto the river and can watch the ships come and go. Not only are there navy ships and submarines, but commercial container ships too. This afternoon, we watched a couple of dolphins playing in the river right out in front of us....Jump to full entry
Jan 3, 2013 - Mayport, Florida
We departed Leitner Lake, Fort Gordon this morning at 8:30. The 280 mile drive to Naval Station Mayport was easy, though rainy all day long. Rebecca drove the first half. This is only an overnight stay, we're on our way to Key West, with only one more overnight stop. We will leave here about 8 a.m. tomorrow with a longer day behind the wheel. It'll be about 290 miles. Our long time readers know we were here last spring and knew it would be a good overnight stop.Jump to full entry
Nov 10, 2012 - Sunrise & Seafood
From Fort Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach, FL ... Saturday, November 10, 2012 In our bedroom in Ali's Cat, we have two small windows on each side of the bed. Last night Charlie slept with the shade open on his window so that the first morning light would wake him up. So it woke him up at 6:15am, and he then woke me up, excited to report how beautiful the pre-sunrise sky was. We somewhat reluctantly got up, dressed, grabbed our coffees, and walked down to the beach to watch the sun come up. The sun rose at 6:48am, and it did not...Jump to full entry
Sep 9, 2012 - Sunset at Mayport...
Great holiday week here at Mayport, plenty to do and a great way to celebrate my 62nd birthday and coming of age for Social Security! Woo Hoo! Great lunch with Jeanne and friends Tom and Mary at Safe Harbor over in Mayport Village, watching the pelicans float and wait for their next meal from the fishing boats. Just a pleasant way to enjoy a meal. Follow that up with some relaxation at several local beach spots listening to jazz and even a little heavy metal and rap, a nice way to spend a birthday. Being along the jetties and watching ships...Jump to full entry
