Feb 21, 2019 - Sirenia Park Paddle

On this beautiful warm day, 18 paddlers convened at the gate to go to a nearby park. This park is really in Cape Coral, but very close to Matlacha. After launching, we could go left towards the open water and see Matlacha or go right into natural canals amongst the mangroves. Joan said "Let's see how the open water is and we can always come back to do the mangroves." So, off we went. It was a bit breezy, the tide was high, and the current was swift. It took us no time to get out a ways. But we recognized that it would be work to come back....

Sep 28, 2014 - Kayaking At Matlacha

We went up north for a two month trip in July and did mostly state parks for camping. I don't think we shall be going up north again very soon. We are going to camp here in Florida and do some things on the rivers and streams here in Florida. I have been thinking about buying a tandem kayak , to be used here in Florida and on vacaton trips. We have a lot of water here in Florida, creeks, rivers, streams and about any body of water you can think of. Norma and I got up today around 9 a.m. , that is early for us. We go to bed when we want and...

WHAT'S NEW IN 2014

Sep 28, 2014 - Kayaking For The First Time

Water, water everywhere!!! Florida is a paddling paradise and how better to appreciate natural beauty than at eye level from a kayak. Florida lists 45 designated paddling trails, 1,700 miles of rivers , streams and creeks. More then 700 natural springs , the temperate climate allows for paddling year-round. I have been looking and thinking about a kayak for Norma and I to get back on to the waterways of florida. We had lived on Fort Myers Beach for over 25 years and had a small motorboat for the backbay. We could go in shallow water and go...

Jan 23, 2014 - Matlacha kayaking

It's been cold and windy here lately, but quite sunny, so we decided to venture out. Since Marilyn and Lettie wanted to join us and needed to rent kayaks, we decided to go to Matlacha and launch from the county park once again (for a couple of us anyway). I had been there before for a late afternoon kayak trip to see the sunset and then eat NY pizza! We had layers of clothes on and the life vests also helped keep us warm. After getting through the open areas, we had great fun in the sun watching many species of birds and enjoying each...

Dec 26, 2013 - kayaking around the island of Matlacha

Joan led us on a sunset kayak today. At least 15 of us went out and most of us went around the whole island. The beginning was in open water, so there were waves to contend with. But after we got beyond that, we could take the time to gaze at the houses on shore, watch pelicans dive and come in to roost for the night, and catch the colors of the sunset. I brought two sets of lights and lit them for the last part of the trip. I was called "wise" for doing that - wise ass, or smart? You decide! Afterwards, 11 of us went to the pizza joint...

Mar 3, 2011 - Island Hoppin'

From WP Franklin COE Campground in Alva, FL ... Thursday, March 3, 2011 We slept in a little later this morning. Once everyone was up and dressed and we had one cup of coffee, we went out for a walk. We followed our usual route around each loop of the campground and then along the road leading out to Hwy 78 and back. We had a “cold front” move through last night which caused temps to drop down to 55 degrees. By the time we went out for our walk it was in the mid 60s which I think is perfect walking weather. In fact, I was happy to see some...
