Jan 14, 2021 - Kayak trip at Lover's Key State Park

After a cool week and rainy day on Wednesday, today was a perfect day for kayaking in a natural canal at this wonderful park. At least 18 of us traveled over an hour to get here and everyone is very helpful getting each other onto the water - wearing masks of course! Since we all paddle at different rates and desire different types of water, we didn't stay all together very long. This made for a very peaceful day without a lot of talking about the world we are enduring at this time. We simply enjoyed the beauty around us and each...

Dec 5, 2019 - Lover's Key kayak outing

It takes awhile to go to the south end of Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island, but the kayaking is beautiful and serene. I saw one bird of at least nine different species today! 4 of us went out to the open water and 4 of us stayed among the mangroves. I stayed inside and had a peaceful paddle.

Dec 6, 2018 - Thursday is kayaking day!

Another Thursday, another day to kayak! Another cold front came through yesterday and it was in the mid 40s when we woke up this morning. We waited until 10 AM and then headed south again to Lover's Key State Park for a kayak among the mangroves in a 2.5 mile long kayak trail. The day was glorious and just right for kayaking once we got there! Again there were 12 of us, and it is nice to see different people join us each week. It was a sign for me that we would see lots of birds when the first one was an Osprey right after we got going....

May 3, 2018 - last kayaking day of the season?

I thank the wind for coming out of the East the last two days because it chased away the Red Tide and allowed us to go to Lover's Key State Park to go kayaking. We did see dead fish in the water and at the beach where a few of us wanted to have lunch, but they didn't deter us! We put in at the launch inside the park because the free launch on the other side of the road was too open and windy for us. Other families were also putting in after renting some kayaks, so it looked like a big bunch of us at the start! There were lots of Ospreys...

Nov 17, 2016 - Lover's Key State Park Kayak Trip

What a fantastic day! Lover's Key State Park is a place I have not been to and after kayaking amongst the mangroves today, I want to come back and hike its trails and even consider camping there! I think this was a record number of kayakers from Carefree out this morning - we left at 8 AM and got to the launch site after 9 AM. There was only one mishap getting in our kayaks - Helen fell out of her canoe while trying to get in to it! Once we got going, we were privileged to find a sunning gator, a black-crowned night heron, a juvenile little...

Feb 1, 2012 - Lovers Key Beach

From WP Franklin Lock Campground in Alva, FL … Wednesday, February 1, 2011 As it has been pretty much every day this winter, the weather was forecast to be beautiful today. So we decided to make it a beach day. After breakfast, we took a two mile walk around the park. Then we packed a cooler of drinks and put our chairs into the trunk of the car, and we were on our way. We have several different nice beach areas within 30 miles in this area; however, with the southwest Florida winter traffic, it generally takes about an hour to get there....
