Feb 20, 2015 - Mardi Gras

We had a real good time in Fort Myers. We met some funny, interesting people, esp. Professor Michael and his wife Linda. They had traveled the world gathering info for the classes he teaches in Canada...and yet he was totally fascinated with our motorhome, and the idea of actually driving it. We spent many of our days scouting out RV parks that we may want to stay at next winter. We've learned alot about how varied the parks can be, and understand better what amenities we're looking for. Next we traveled down to Naples to celebrate Mardi...

Feb 11, 2014 - Fishing!

On Tuesday, Feb 11, Tom got up early and drove to Marathon where the "Best Bet" fishing charter was set to go out into the Atlantic and see if there were any fish to catch. John (Anne' brother) had set up the charter and there were 2 other guys (Larry & Jim) on board as we headed out to the "spot." As we approached the designated fishing grounds, the mate lowered the chum bags and began to cover the water behind the slow-moving boat with of all things - oatmeal! This chum brings the fish up from the deep and the tiny hooks with a finger...

Feb 2, 2014 - Long Key State Park

We worked hard last winter to get a campsite in Long Key State Park where the competition for sites is intense. It was worth the effort! The rule is 11 months in advance and a maximum stay of 2 weeks. Of course, we are here 2 weeks! As we headed down the Florida Turnpike (with our Sunpass), and as we approached Homestead, we got more excited. The Overseas Highway is the only road down from there along these narrow pieces of land that were formed on coral. Now the travel became less swift than the hustle bustle of the Pike. Each key...

Apr 30, 2010 - Long Key...MM67

Long Key was called Cayo Vivora (Rattlesnake Key) by early Spanish explorers, a reference to the shape of the island, which resembles a snake with its jaws open, rather than to its denizens. It is smaller and less developed than the neighboring incorporated village of Islamorada to the northeast and city of Marathon to the southwest. The city of Layton is located on Long Key. After departing from 4 days at Curry Hammock SP, we headed back up the keys to Long Keys. Located near MM 67, Long Key has been a second favorite for us in the last...

Jan 16, 2010 - Long Key State Park

We left Greg's around 10 on Wednesday morning. The new GPS got us right on the Turnpike without getting lost as we had done the last time we attempted this navigation. Anne really likes this Christmas present! There was not as much construction on the Overseas Highway (US 1) once we got to Key Largo so the trip down through the Keys was not as slow as it had been two years ago. We arrived at Long Key State Park early in the afternoon even after stopping to mail our property tax and a 50th birthday card for our Webster mailman, Jimmy. We set...

Mar 18, 2009 - March 12th-18th Long Key, FL

Our second week at Long Key State Park was just as relaxing as the first. We did take a full day fishing trip off shore at Islamorada. Unfortunately, we did not bring back any "keepers". Saturday, the 14th of March, Skip and Gail Madsen visited us for the day from the Everglades. We had a great time at the Marathon Seafood Festival; continued the day at Long Key with hor'dorves, and then on to Islamorada for dinner. A wonderful time was had by all; they'll be our neighbors at Bahia Honda next week! YEAH! We're now trying to teach Kiki,...

Mar 12, 2009 - March 5th-11th...Long Key

I think the photos speak for themselves. This is such a relaxing trip for Bob and I, it's incredible! We love it! As you can tell, we moved from Bahia Honda State Park, up to Long Key State Park. We 're here for 14 days, and then back to Bahia for the last 25 days here in the Keys. Both parks offer something completely different and unique. Although, we enjoy our stays at both, its' still pleasant to capture yet another view of these beautiful Keys. Totally, unlike the rest of Florida, the Keys are made up of almost 100 islands (keys)...

May 12, 2008 - Long Key

We spent last night just outside Homestead. This morning it was all I could do to walk the short distance to the office to mail my postcards to Tommy. It is SO HOT AND HUMID!! I don't know how people live here or what they would do if the power went out. I did not get to the Coral Castle, Jackie, and it was only maybe 7 blocks from us. I stayed inside and tried to survive. Today is a whole different story. We're in the keys! There is a breeze and it's not as hot. The guy next to us is from Glendale (Ca). So he knows Manhattan Beach and said...
