Feb 12, 2020 - Spirit of the Road

I haven't been able to update because Crooked River does't have wifi and I used all of my internet access on the iPad. The weather has been great in SE Georgia this week. The last day we spent at Crooked River, they decided to do a controlled burn of the underbrush in the surrounding forest area. We had smoke and occasional ash showers as the fires worked their way through the pine needles and low brush on the ground. We left Crooked River on Wednesday and worked our way southwest to Live Oak, Florida for the RVillage Spirit of the Road...

Dec 19, 2017 - Live Oak FL

Tue, 19 Dec: Continuing along the Panhandle... The Florida Panhandle is pretty long. We spent time yesterday and all day today driving and we're still in the Panhandle. We had a quiet nite at the Crestview Wal*Mart and awoke rested around half past six. We got ourselves and Carpe ready for the road. But first, we got parked in and had to back up, which means we had to disconnect the car, back the coach, and then reconnect the car. We try to avoid such situations but on occasion they happen. Part of the "game". Bob rolled wheels at 0845 and...

Feb 25, 2016 - Live Oak, FL

Thu, 25 Feb: Still chugging east... Today was another travel day, should be our last long-ish day. We awoke to a chilly coach in Crestview as the overnite temps dropped into the high thirties. Our gas furnaces took care of the chill and we enjoyed a somewhat lazy morning. After cleaning up our breakfast dishes and getting th coach ready to roll Sandi hit the road at half past nine. The Wal*Mart was only a short distance from Interstate 10 so in short order we were heading east into the sun. After several days of cloudy and gloomy weather a...

Nov 21, 2011 - Florida - at last!

Yesterday we stayed at one of the nicest RV Parks on our trip. Capital City RV Park in Montgomery, AL. It was $27 per night, Good Sam’s rate. It had an excellent laundry, TV lounge, kiddie’s playground, library, enclosed, lawned pet play area, oodles of TV channels (which we never even turned on), individual, large tiled bathrooms, (which we also did not need to use) huge level, gravel sites with concrete patio’s, each with patio furniture and landscaping, lightning fast WiFi (very important) and additional parking next to the patio. We...

Living our RV Dream!

Apr 23, 2011 - Live Oak, Florida

We slept in this morning. And I dressed and went downstairs to get coffee and breakfast. And later, I helped Elgin shower and dress and we were on the road by 10:00am. We drove 2 hours and stopped for diesel and grabbed a fish sandwich at McDonald's. And we stopped an hour or so later at a rest stop, so we could stretch our legs a bit. We arrived at the Holiday Inn at Live Oak, Fl. about 3:00...just in time for a short nap. And later we went down the road a ways to a place called the Dixie Grill. It was recommended by the hotel. And we had...

The Davis Dream

Mar 22, 2011 - Live Oak, Florida, and stops along the way

We have gone from one famous historic river (the Mississippi in Louisiana) to another (the Suwannee in Florida) with a couple nice little lakes in between. Maynor Creek Water Park, Mississippi One of nine such parks operated by the Pat Harrison Waterway District (a Mississippi state agency that manages the rivers and their tributaries within the Pascagoula River Basin), this park in eastern Mississippi is noted mostly for its great bass fishing on Maynor Creek Lake. Although we are not fisher-folk, we enjoyed conversing with the very...

Jun 12, 2009 - Rainbow Plantation, Alabama to Florida.

Well after saying our goodbyes to Betty and all our wonderful friends at Betty’s RV Park we were ready to hit the trail at 9 am. We really felt like we were “leaving home”, so it was a sad time hugging all our buddies and pulling out of her park. We did get a farewell gift from Betty though – great “Betty’s RV Park” T-Shirts!! After a good uneventful days driving yesterday we arrived in Summerdale, Alabama. I had mentioned in an earlier post that we would be seeing friends Ron and Ruth Phinney again (who we met at Betty’s) as they had so...

Living our RV Dream!

Jun 12, 2008 - Our First Stop

Our First stop is Camping World in Kissimme Florida for a small upgrade on the RV. We had arrangements in advance to have a new and stronger "anti-sway" bar installed to prevent being pushed all over the road in high winds and passing 18 wheelers. It was worth it and the secind half of our first day was completed without a white knuckle drive. We're at the Gerogia border right now after getting caught in some severe thunderstorms last evening. The last picture shows us eating dinner (and a glass of wine, of course) during the hieght on a...

Dec 4, 2006 - Air Photo at Gainesville

During the Escapade we spoke with a representative from Air Photo, Inc. They take helicopter portraits of homes and need an extensive staff of mobile people to sell them to the homeowners. It sounded like fun to us, so here in Gainesville we tried it for the first time. It was a challenge to read the map provided by the photographer and translate it into homes on the ground, but after a while we got the knack. The people of the area weren't very well off, however, and few of them could afford the pictures. The ones who were tickled with...

Way down upon de Swanee Ribber, far far away Dere's wha my heart is turning ebber Dere's wha de old folks stay All up and down de whole creation, sadly I roam Still longing for de old plantation And for de old folks at home Written by Stephen Foster in 1851. He also authored Oh Susanna!, Camptown Races and My Old Kentucky Home. Interestingly enough, he never visted or saw the Suwannee River!

Viva la Vita

Jun 25, 2006 - Spirit of the Suwannee, Live Oak, FL

The next place we stopped at sounded very strange and we (as in me) were extremely doubtful about it, but of course I was wrong and found that it was delightful !! The full name is "The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park and Campground" and is dedicated to preserving Tradional American music - which includes Blue Grass Festivals, Jamming Sessions and Gospel Jubilees. Definitely not my cup of tea. Luckily there were no concerts scheduled during the two days we were there!! We were right on the edge of the Suwannee River, which as a child I...
