Aug 12, 2018 - Oh, Dear, Doe Eat!

Day 27 Sunday 8/12/2018. Oh, Dear, Doe Eat! This being the final day of our excursions on this road trip, we were looking forward to a great finale by visiting the Land Between The Lakes in Kentucky and Tennessee. The Land Between The Lakes is a 170,000 acre peninsula owned and protected by the Federal Government. In the 1930’s the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) constructed 2 dams to control flooding and to provide hydroelectric power. The Tennessee River and the Cumberland River were damed thus forming the Lakes: Lake Kentucky and Lake...

Aug 11, 2018 - Travel Travail Or Not!

Day 26 Saturday 8/11/2018. Travel Travail Or Not! We had a relatively short distance to travel today to reach Duck Creek RV Park in Paducah, KY. Is there no better state postal abbreviation than for Kentucky? I hope it’s not apropos. Anyhow, since I knew this was my ultimate bridge test for this trip, I drug my feet getting ready to break camp. To further delay the inevitable I asked the Navigator to plot only state and county roads south where the speed limit was 55 and driving through the small towns decreased our average rate of...

Aug 10, 2018 - At Last!!

Day 25 Friday 8/10/2018. At Last!! I couldn’t wait to get on the road and that’s probably why I woke up at 4:00 am thinking about my day of traveling bliss. I AM LEAVING WISCONSIN and their terrible highway system. Actually the Navigator woke up at 5:30 so we decided to hit the road and left at 7:30. We still had some distance to travel in good ole badger country but this time it was mainly on I-39 south. I like that word “south”. Even though the interstate skirted around Madison, it was still very busy since it was rush hour......again....

Aug 9, 2018 - Achtung! I Schmellin Sumtin Gud!

Day 24 Thursday 8/9/2018. Achtung! I Schmellin Sumting Gud! Our first stop this morning was at Mt Horeb about 25 minutes from our campground. Another start for us at 8:30 am. Little did we know what was lurking in the not too distant future. First, let me clarify one crucial fact: There is NO cell coverage up here in this part of “loserconsin”. Off we go on the GPS’s bitch’s instructions to follow this road and that road and all seemed well until........A DAMN DETOUR AGAIN! Back we went onto the alphabet roads climbing and descending hills...

Aug 8, 2018 - De Plane, De Plane, No!, De Tour, De Tour!

Day 23 Wednesday. 8/8/2018. De Plane, De Plane, No!, De Tour, De Tour! The rested travelers started out this morning at 8:30 am heading for Lodi, WI. Our trip started out rather nicely as we traveled around Lake Michigan but as we crossed over into Wisconsin things went to hell in a hand basket. Just when I thought we would have easy sailing the Wisconsin’s famous wash board roads greeted us with bone rattling and bumps. The poor RV was shaking and rocking and the tow dolly was squeezing as we bumped and ground our way south. Then it...

Aug 7, 2018 - Can You Eat Pasties?

Day 22 Monday 8/7/2018. Can You Eat Pasties? Today we have reached the apogee of our road trip and will be turning south tomorrow. The Navigator rushed us out the door at 8:00am so we could drive the 25 miles to Munising and change our Classic Cruise tickets and exchange them for the earlier cruise that includes the Spray Waterfall. This cruise started at 11:00am so we were the first in line at 10:05am. This is only time I’ve been first in line for a tour so accolades to me, I think. The temperature this morning at 7:00 was 57 degrees and...

Aug 6, 2018 - Does It Ever End?

Day 21 Monday. 8/6/2018. Does It Ever End? Today is a travel day to Manistique, MI which is 25 minutes south of Munising, MI where we will be taking a cruise tomorrow to see the Pictured Rocks. The drive was still over the 2 lane highways but this time there were passing lanes so all the impatient Michiganders could pass me even though I was going the speed limit of 55. It was a beautiful drive with Lake Superior always on our left. I don’t think this lake ever ends. It seems like ever since we’ve been in the U.P. we have been driving...

Aug 5, 2018 - Hey, Ma, We’re Here!

Day 20 Sunday 8/05/2018. Hey, Ma, We’re Here! The time-zone weary travelers actually slept in this morning until 7:30 am Eastern Time. After a quick cereal breakfast, we drove to the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park to view waterfalls. The drive through the forests was relaxing and the road was well maintained as we casually scaled up to the dizzying height of 750’. We paid our $9 entrance fee and drove up the northern terminus of the park road to see the Lake In The Clouds. Since I have zero interest in Nature, especially high...

Aug 4, 2018 - Rain, Rain Go Away!

Day 19 Saturday 8/04/2018. Rain, Rain Go Away! It rained all night last night and while the raindrops on the RV roof made for good sleeping I was dreading breaking camp in the rain. Fortunately the rain abated for just long enough for us to pack up and move out. Just as I pulled out onto the alphabet road the rain started up again and it poured until we left Wisconsin. I hate driving 2 lane crappy roads in the rain while local drivers lined up behind me. If they had the nerve, they could pass me because I wasn’t driving any faster and I...

Aug 3, 2018 - A Blue Light Special.

Day 18 Friday 8/03/2018. A Blue Light Special? 5:00am came early this morning; the alarm clock I had set for 5:00am actually rang its little heart out at 1:00am. Evidently I have forgotten how to set an analog clock and now we woke up every hour checking the time. Our tootsies hit the cold floor at the correct bewitching hour. A quick breakfast consisting of hot pockets ( don’t eat this junk) and a banana and we were off at 6:00am for the 83 mile drive into Bayfield to catch the Grand Cruise of The Apostle Islands. We had to drive the 2...

Aug 2, 2018 - Uh,Oh!!!

Day 17 Thursday. 8/02/2018. Uh, Oh!!!! Another seemingly calm and uneventful travel day until..... Our ultimate destination today was to drive to Iron River, WI and camp for a couple of days and take the cruise boat around the Apostle Islands to see lighthouses and sea caves and various other touristy delights. The Navigator waited until 9:00am and then started calling campgrounds there to reserve a spot for us for Thursday and Friday. Since the weekend was approaching, all of the campgrounds she called were full. She had called 12...

Aug 1, 2018 - R U Kidding Me!???!!!!????!!

Day 16 Wednesday 8/011/2018. R U Kidding Me!?!?!?!!!! My, my, my, another early morning for the intrepid road trippers; 5:30 am seems to be the norm now that we are out West. By the time we ate and packed up it was 8:00 am when we hit the road. Our plans called for us spend the night at The Country Campground in Detroit Lakes, MN, however, when the Navigator called at 9am to reserve a site for us she was told NO ROOM FOR YOU because there was a concert in town and people poured off the prairie to attend. The kind lady did recommend the...
