Dec 20, 2017 - more letterboxes

There were 5 letterboxes to find in Lake Wales and Winter Haven, so I went after them today. A stamp of Bok Tower was found in the Lake Wales Public Library - a great souvenir. A detailed bee stamp was found at a honey store where you pay for honey goods by the honor system! I contemplated buying a jar of honey, but I didn't have $5 and wasn't willing to buy $20 worth of honey products! And then I got a stamp of an image of St. Anne, the patroness of unmarried women! She was "idolized" up near Quebec where we saw the Basilique...

Dec 14, 2017 - Bok Tower & Gardens

After playing a different kind of shuffleboard game in the morning, we had lunch and headed out to Lake Wales where Bok Tower & Gardens is located. We got there just in time to join a guided tour up to the tower along with about 30 people! It was quite informative, showing us various plants and stuff. When we got to the top where the tower is, he explained how the tower is meant to look like a natural growth out of the ground. I have an imagination, but I cannot see this giant monolith being a natural growth! It is made out of local stone...

Jan 20, 2016 - Bok Tower & Gardens

Chic and I went to Lake Wales where I took my ground mat to the manufacturer so they could patch another hole made by squirrels up at the Upper Delaware where I have been working the past few summers. It is two hours to the north and east of Fort Myers. We went up to Bok Gardens and Tower for a couple of hours and enjoyed the scenery and tower. We had lunch at the cafe before taking a shuttle up to the tower. We got there in time to listen to a mini concert of the bells in the tower. It is a beautiful place to visit and I highly recommend...

Mar 28, 2014 - Chalet Suzanne, Lake Wales, FL

We ate at Chalet Suzanne over 8 years ago, we had a great meal then, we went back and had another wonderful meal and the ambiance and view is extremely nice. The restaurant and resort are designated a Historical site. History In the “Boom Days” of the 1920’s, Carl and Bertha Hinshaw Sr. moved to the quiet community of Lake of the Hills, north of Lake Wales, Florida, to be near her aging parents. A short while later they found themselves partnered with J.L. Kraft, head of the Kraft Cheese Company. Together they planned to develop a lovely...

Mar 23, 2014 - Bok Tower & Gardens

We visited Bok Towers and gardens, a must see when in central Florida, it is located near Lake Wales. Bok Gardens The gardens began in 1921 when a Dutch immigrant, Edward W. Bok, a Pulitzer Prize winner, editor of the popular women's magazine Ladies Home Journal and his wife, Mary Louise Curtis Bok, who would found the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in 1924, were spending the winter beside Florida's Lake Wales Ridge and decided to create a bird sanctuary on its highest hill (298 feet above sea level). Bok commissioned noted...

Where in hell is "YEEHAW JUNCTION" in kentucky or tennessee, no it is right here in florida about 60 miles south of Lake Wales and twenty some mile west of Vero Beach.Every year about three weeks before the bluegrass festival they move the cows and donkeys from the main field for the bluegrass festival. This is so the "COW PATTIES" can dry up enough so that the people dont have to step in cow stuff and so they can hold the annual "COW PATTY contest to see who can throw the "COW" stuff long distance. The grass is cut in the main area for the...

GEOCACHING 2014

Mar 7, 2013 - Bok Tower Gardens

We went to Bok Tower Gardens to the south west of Kissimmee. The tower is a national monument and is set in beautiful gardens and parkland. It was set up by yet another immigrant made good. The tower is called the singing tower because the 1920's built carillion is the centre piece and concerts are given every day. We sat and listened to a concert while admiring the tower. The approach to the gardens is through an orange grove. The gardens contain a multitude of plants and animals. There is a small lake with a viewing area for wild life, a...

The Woods at Large

Jan 28, 2013 - The Candy Store

Another interesting day. A few weeks ago, Dave asked Mike if he would like to take a trip to The Candy Store some day soon, and Mike said that sounded like a great idea. A great idea? This was after Christmas and all of the extra desserts, non-stop eating, chocolates brought to Coventry from Long Island by Wendy (given to her by various students) which she made us keep! More candy, just what we need. Such a gullible one, I am! Both Dave and Mike were delighted that I fell for their joke. "The Candy Store" is actually a fisherman's tackle...

Jun 11, 2012 - Home Again

So I thought I’d add one more entry to this journal. We spent our last night in the RV in Anchorage at Ship Creek RV Park. Time to clean out the pantry and fridge and start packing things up to head onto the cruise ship Island Princess. We had met this lovely family from Washington earlier in the week and ran into them again at Ship Creek and they were glad to take some of the pantry items from us so we didn’t have to toss them! We headed out Wednesday morning to fill the gas tank and turn in the RV. The Great Alaskan folks are really well...
