Jan 1, 2017 - New Years in Lake Placid

. Hazel and I left Orlando after lunch on December 28th, and drove the 120 miles to Lake Placid, arriving mid-afternoon, pulling right into our friend's driveway to spend 4 nights. Dave and Helen were our backyard neighbors in International Falls, Minnesota for nearly 10 years, they spend summers in the Falls, winters in Lake Placid. . We spent the next day or two doing nothing strenuous, the four of us drove around to local thrift stores, where some real bargains were to be had, I bought a book on tape, Tom Brokaw's "The Greatest...

Mar 12, 2016 - Boating on Lake Placid

After spending more time at the Seminole Indian Casino in Immokalee, it was time to head out and start to make our way North. The plan is to arrive back in Minnesota in early April, and we want to stop along the way at some favorite RV parks. Dave and Helen were expecting us in Lake Placid, so after checking in at the Sun RV Resort there and unhooking the Tracker, we headed over to their place in time for cocktail hour. Dave's neighbors were nice enough to invite us all out on their pontoon boat, and we had a great tour, heading up a couple...

Mar 8, 2015 - A Picnic on Lake Okeechobee

We've had a great time visiting our friends Dave and Helen Ramnes. Dave and Helen drove us down to Lake Okeechobee for a picnic lunch in a park, cooking hot dogs and beans. We walked out on the park pier to see the alligators, but only heard them grunting in the tall grass. Dave told us about the 1928 Hurricane that nearly drained the lake, flooding the surrounding countryside, with great loss of life. Back in the motorhome, I read all about it here. I had a couple of nice sirloin steaks from our grocery store road-kill bin back home, and...

Mar 7, 2015 - Laundry Day

Sign seen in the laundry: "Please be aware that alligators are dangerous and should not be taken lightly--Alligators may seem docile, but can strike with lightening quickness. If you spot an alligator, do not approach -- contact the office immediately!" Duh! Sounds like a Darwin Award in the making. side note: John is now officially RETIRED!!!!

Mar 5, 2015 - What happens when you turn LEFT upon leaving the Lake Placid RV resort...

(As Albert Hitchcock used to say): “GOOOOD EV-EN-ING” Yesterday, a couple of the resort residents encouraged us to attend a coffee hour at the clubhouse, promising good coffee and free doughnuts, and “usually a good program.” The coffee/doughnuts were as advertised, the resident-members at our table welcoming, and the program? Organ donation! It turns out that several people in this community have either been part of a family who has donated, or a family that has received, a donor organ. There was even a retired private pilot who spoke...

Feb 9, 2015 - Rested and Ready

Well, we just spent 8 days at the Sunshine RV Resort in Lake Placid, Fl and it has been nice not having to get up and move to a new campsite. We haven't had reservations anywhere along the way, except for Disney, and have found that southern Fl is full up everywhere you go this time of the year. You might be able to stay some place for a few days but that is all that is available for the most part. We seemed to get far enough south on this last move to finally find warm weather. Sunshine and the low 70's. It still drops down into the 50's...

Feb 15, 2014 - Lake Placid , New York !!!!!!!! No In Florida

We went up to Lake Placid , Florida to take a look at all the mural's on the wall of the store fronts and side wall of the buildings in town. A very small old town with a lot of history. We enjoyed the walk down main street and while looking at the murals we also did some geocaching. In the city park they had trash cans that looked like a old car. You pushed open the side window of the car and a horn would blow and then you could drop in your trash. The container with the log sheet was just inside the window towards the front. It was...

Apr 17, 2013 - Most Interesting Town in USA

Reader's Digest had a contest last year inviting people to enter their town and tell why it would be a most interesting place to visit. Lake Placid, FL won for 3 reasons. First, it produces 95% of the world's caladium plant which blooms from June to October. Thousands of those plants decorated Atlanta for the 1996 Summer Olympics. Second, there is a clown school there, started by Toby the clown in the 1980s when there were no schools of that type. It still graduates about 100 clowns a year! Third, artists have painted 44 murals on buildings...

Feb 21, 2013 - Good bye Dinner

This evening the ladies went to the local Subway shop and bought Sub for our dinner this evening so we could say our goodbye's. We all met down on the water front on the lake around 5:30pm. We were told that everyone did a great job and as your reward you receive what they call "YOUR PAY CHECK" (smile). That is what they call your receipt for Uncle Sam for tax purposes saying you were a volunteer. We had a great time together. The next day folks were on their way to different places.

After the hamcation we returned back to Lake Placid Camp and Conference Center to continue our Missionary Volunteer project. We have joined a Non-Demoninational Missionary Group providing service to the Lord through our handi work. The men work Monday-Thursday from 8:30am-4:00pm with two breaks and an hour for lunch. The women help as needed or as they want to. I really enjoyed helping out doing many chores in the kitchen area while Tom and the guys built two Gazebos.
