Nov 5, 2014 - Black bears in Highlands Hammock State Park

We made it to our destination at Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring, Florida. This will again be our home for the winter. We love it here. We were greeted by several of our old friends from last year including some of our favorite Park Rangers. It seems that there are several black bears roaming the campground. I have included a couple of pix attached of one of them. She is 2 yrs old. Her mother put her out on her own because the mom now has two new cubs to raise. She is raiding the dumpsters for food because her normal supply of saw...

Feb 23, 2014 - Leaving Highlands Hammock SP

We are down to our last few days at HHSP. It's bittersweet, of course. We really have enjoyed our four months here. Beautiful place with lots of wildlife and tropical vegetation. And warm winter weather. We have made some friends here in the rangers and other volunteers that we hope to see again if we return here next winter. But for now we are moving to Rainbow Springs State Park about 150 miles north of here. It is a much different park. A river passes through the park with swimming, tubing, snorkeling, canoeing, kayaking. We are excited...

Feb 8, 2014 - Highlands Hammock State Park

After Disney World, we didn’t want to rush around and miss out on all that Florida has to offer. We made reservations at a few state parks, so we could see what the area has to offer. Florida, like many states, has a lot of parks… so we worked out a general direction we wanted to go, and chose parks along that route from the FSPW website that looked interesting. The First of these parks was Highlands Hammock State Park. This park is one of the oldest parks in the state, and the campground shows it. The first thing you notice is the...

Feb 2, 2014 - Another change of plans

We are still at Highlands Hammock SP. Carla asked us to stay. Even though we werent sure of getting our deposit back from Lake Rousseau, we agreed to stay. We really like this place. The Rangers are great to work with. Carla is great to work for. And all of the volunteers(except for the shit disturbers) are great people to work with. I think we found a winter home! BTW, several days after notifying Carla that we would stay on for February, we got notice that we would receive a refund of most of our deposit. We made the right decision to...

Jan 18, 2014 - Last two weeks at Highlands Hammock, revised

The Christmas and NYrs holidays were busy at the campground. All sites were full of campers celebrating. We had a pleasant surprise when our friends, the Campoli family, from North Carolina visited us. We took them on a private tour of the restricted areas. Saw lots of alligators and tropical birds. So nice to see some of our sac family. Karens birthday was Dec 20th so we celebrated by going to see a movie, The Hobbit. Well we have two more weeks here then move to Lake Rousseau. We both had the flu a few weeks ago. We are well now. Karen...

This is a great park with a great atmosphere and wild life. We are happy to be staying. In February we will still move to Lake Rousseau.

Dec 8, 2013 - "We can just live now"

Today we decided to book a camping spot for January 2014. We havent been able to find a workamping/volunteer position for January. Most all of the jobs are filled by snowbirds. We had a few possibilities but nothing certain. So rather than wait until the end of the month and not know where we are going, we booked a spot at Whispering Pines RV in Silver Springs, near the Ocala National Forest. We were also invited to their New Years Eve party where they will have a friend from Switzerland singing Elvis songs. That should be interesting. Now...

Nov 18, 2013 - Snakes and gators and lost kids, oh my!

Its been an eventful weekend. We went on a tram ride into the unauthorized areas with a park ranger as our guide. We saw more gators than I have ever seen in my entire life. The campgrounds was full this past weekend also which made for some interesting times. We rescued a lost 4 yr old boy who had wandered away from his grandpas campsite. We asked him what his grandpas an,e is and his answer, of course, was "grandpa" which is the answer we should have expected. Well alls well as we called the rangers, they found his "lost" grandparents and...
