Aug 20, 2018 - Florida, Part 1

Well, today we arrived in Gulf Breeze, Fla., near Pensacola, where we are going to spend a day with my sister and brother-in-law. The drive here from Louisiana was 200 miles of rain. We drove in and out of downpours. At one point near Gulfport we came upon an accident blocking the left lane. Someone had flipped their car on its side. Hopefully no one was seriously hurt. Ginny and Jon have lived in Gulf Breeze for 14 years. This is the second time we have been here for a visit. Their house is on a canal that leads to the bay. We went out on...

Southwest trek

Aug 13, 2018 - Saturday Aug 11

Well as you all may well know by now we have had a dramatic change of events. Saturday was such a good day I feel I owe it to myself and the memory of this trip to write in my journal and record all those great feelings as if nothing had happened yet. So here goes. We got up VERY early this morning to try and get ahead of the traffic we dealt with yesterday! We were on the road literally at the crack of dawn and stopped for our favorite breakfast at McDonald's! Love my Egg McMuffin! There isn't much you can do to an egg to make it...

Apr 21, 2016 - Gulf Islands National Seashore

Arrived on Santa Rosa Island on Friday, April 16 and spent 5 days on the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The campground was very nice, with the beach on one side, and maritime forest on the other. We saw lots of birds like osprey, heron, and countless others that I can't begin to name. Armadillos came right into camp each evening! The beaches were spectacular, with white sands and green water. We visited historic Fort Pickens, which was occupied by the Union Army during the Civil War, when it last saw actual combat. It also operated during...

Dec 25, 2015 - No such thing as a white Xmas in the South

Xmas on Friday makes for a short week, so starting Monday we were up at light of day (which is a respectable 7am...maybe even 7.30 if the truth was told) and working on the to-do list, a necessary evil as the lawyer had found some gremlins perched in our documentation; like the lack of a list of prospective employees and their relevant information, alter the business plan, complete two new forms for me, one less for Nick and where was our Operating Agreement?? WTH is an Operating Agreement???.....all became clear after a quick phone call...

Jun 14, 2014 - Gulf Breeze, Florida

6/14 – 6/17 Since the kids WERE NOT all beached out, their parents decided to lengthen the trip by a couple days and head for the National Seashore and some even prettier beaches. There was only one site left for the 14th so they went there directly while we took a couple days to get there. The first day we traveled 75 miles to a Walmart parking lot in Navarre, Florida (US98). Before we left the park we headed to the dump to empty our tanks. Along the way we heard a bang but could not determine what the noise was from. When we arrived at...

Feb 17, 2014 - McGuires Irish Pub, Naval Live Oak Preserve and Gulf Breeze sculpture

McGuire’s Irish Pub first opened in 1977 as a small neighborhood pub in a shopping center. In 1982 McGuire’s moved to its current location; Pensacola’s original 1927 Old Firehouse. Inside the pub you’ll find a turn-of-the-century, New York Irish Saloon themed restaurant. McGuires is celebrated for its atmosphere boasting more than One Million signed dollar bills hanging from the ceilings and walls of the Pub. We visited The Naval Live Oak Reservation near Gulf Breeze. The U.S. Government purchased the tract of land making up the Naval Live...

Nov 5, 2011 - Day trip to Nat'l Seashore

From Grayton Beach State Park on the Florida Gulf Coast … Friday, November 4, 2011 We took our time getting going this morning by having our usual cup of coffee to get the day started. After an hour or two, we got ready to get on the road for today’s little trip. We headed down Highway 98 toward Pensacola. Since we had a late start, we decided to go ahead and stop in Destin for some lunch. We weren’t sure what we would find if we waited until we got to the National Seashore. We had read an article in a local paper about a place called...

May 11, 2009 - Gulf Breeze, Florida

Monday, May 11 Left Alabama and down the road to Gulf Breeze, Florida. We are happy to be visiting Trevor's Grandparents, Max & Jay Duhon. We had met them once before when Brynn and Trevor graduated from AMDA. We parked in the Walmart parking lot, as their place did not have wide enough roads to accommodate our Motorhome. Jay came and got us and took us back to their home and we had a great visit over some Zinfandel. And you know that is my favorite. Jay and Max were very welcoming and we had lots to talk about, "the kids". They took us on...

Sep 23, 2007 - Day Twenty - New Orleans, LA to Gulf Breeze, FL

Today we left New Orleans and headed for Florida. We saw lots of Katrina damage after we left NO, which was very sad, but we also saw a lot of repair work and rebuilding being done. The same thing was seen through Mississippi which got hit just as hard it seems. We talked to one of the bridge repair workers at Waffle House in Gulfport where we waited out the thunderstorm that blew in. He had a great attitude, considering he had lost 2 homes and four cars to the storm. He said with government aid and lots of overtime he was doing fine and...
