May 1, 2018 - Day 1. Turtles, alligator, deer and the state butterfly.
Made it to Fort Clinch State Park around 6 last night. They know your name when you are the last to check in. Ride from Altamonte Springs highlighted by our amazement that the CRV was still attached. Beautiful sunset last night with champagne thanks to Laura and Geoff our RV mentors. Today we hiked and biked. Saw turtles, gators, the State butterfly, The zebra longwing, a deer and two Dolphins who appeared at tonight's sunset. Tired- walked through the lush Florida wetland trails and biked later bypassing the ocean. Grateful for all the...Jump to full entry
Oct 22, 2015 - Amelia Island
I liked that I got to this park about 4:30 and didn't have to leave until 1 PM the next day! I stayed in the park the whole time because the road is 3 miles long and is so beautiful, I didn't want to go anywhere else! I walked around the campground and to the viewing area at the end, but didn't stay for the sun to set. I walked a nature trail that led to the back end of Fort Clinch! So, on the morning of the 23rd, I drove to Egan's Creek Scenic view (1 mile into the park) and saw the Amelia Island Lighthouse across the marsh. I didn't see...Jump to full entry
Nov 19, 2014 - Back in florida, why am I so cold?
We had the pleasure of an overnight stop at Fort Clinch state park a few years ago en route to North Carolina and promised ourselves that we would return for a more appreciative visit. So here we are at the end of the first of our two week stay and the park and area have not disappointed us. The park is at the Georgia end of Amelia island very close to the very cute historic downtown of Fernandina beach. Across the river from the park you can see georgia. Amelia island has about 12.5 miles of beaches, extending the length of the island....Jump to full entry
Nov 12, 2014 - ACE basin week two
Greetings from florida! We returned to florida yesterday and have settled in for two weeks at fort clinch state park. The washroom is just lovely and they have laundry at the washroom. After three weeks with the closest laundry facilities 20 miles away we were so happy to see those machines last night we washed three loads before dark. Clean sheets, oh joy! First, a shout out to cousin Olga for her email alerting us to the wonderful national geographic article in the November 2014 issue on the ACE basin, which just happens to be the...Jump to full entry
Mar 31, 2014 - Fort Clinch State Park
Back to Fort Clinch State Park for 2 nights. The Great Northern Migration has begun! We left Hobe Sound this morning (sniff, sniff) at 7:30 am. It was a good day to travel - not too hot and no wind. We arrived just after lunch and have a site on the ocean side of the park. We can see the ocean from our windows! Ah, bliss... We will stay here 2 nights before heading up to South Carolina.Jump to full entry
Dec 20, 2013 - Submarine races!
What a great day at camp! It was so nice to stay put today. The weather was perfect, about 70 degrees this afternoon. Just right for taking a hike in the park. We did not see any alligators (fine with me!) and Terra was very eager to head down the trail. She really appreciates the warmer weather as she gets older. Guess we all do.... We were very surprised this morning when we spotted a submarine heading down the Amelia river! It was really, really big. We were not aware that there is a submarine base across the bay from us. It the the...Jump to full entry
Dec 19, 2013 - Florida!
We have finally reached Florida! Yahoo! We had a short travel day today and arrived at our destination of Fort Clinch State Park at noon. This is just north of Jacksonville and we stayed here last year. Lovely old forests with spanish moss hanging from the trees. Lots of palm trees and a real "old Florida" feel to the campground. We have checked in for 2 nights and are enjoying the park. Temperature was in the 60's today and tomorrow will reach the 70's. But now, a little about our site last night in South Carolina. Why does there always...Jump to full entry
Jan 8, 2013 - Cruising Jacksonville
Today we cruised around the area to get a "feel" for this part of Florida and see a little local color. Amelia Island was beautiful. Very clean and classy. The first picture is of a free fishing facility that is just gorgeous. It is open 24 hours a day, has free pump out service for boats as well as fresh water available. There is a huge boat launch and lots of room to park. There were no rules about overnight parking and I am sure it would be a great free stop-over spot. We passed 2 more of these fishing areas in a small stretch of...Jump to full entry
Jan 7, 2013 - Florida!
We made it to Florida! We are at the far north east corner of Florida at Fort Clinch State Park. It is so beautiful here! We have water and electric hookups and the vegetation is so wild and tropical that it looks like a jungle. We had a short travel day - only 165 miles. We got here by lunch and found a nice site without having any reservations. We are very impressed with Florida State Parks, so far! After lunch, we took a walk to the Fort. Found deer tracks in the sand on the trail. There are bike trails here (unpaved) that we may need to...Jump to full entry
Nov 13, 2012 - Last day at Fort Clinch
From Fort Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach, FL ... Monday, November 12, 2012 I have to keep this entry short and sweet because our internet here is very intermittent and s l o w. It's a miracle I was able to upload these photos! Tomorrow will be our last day here in Fernandina Beach. The week has gone by so fast. But time always flies when you're having fun. And we have definitely enjoyed our time here. Last night we slept with the windows open so we could listen to the waves crashing on the ocean. Ahhhh, now that's relaxing. The...Jump to full entry
Nov 7, 2012 - Travel to Fernandina Beach, FL
From Fort Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach, FL ... Wednesday, November 7, 2012 When our alarm went off this morning at 6:30am, we reluctantly crawled out of our warm bed. The last couple mornings here have been chilly which is perfect sleeping weather in our opinion. We spent more time watching the morning news than we normally do on a travel day. But it was tempting to watch the election coverage. We were also checking election returns from Virginia since we are not seeing that on the local news here in FL, of course. We had...Jump to full entry
May 8, 2012 - Pirates ahoy...
Great week for this trip to Ft. Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach...our first visit to this great location, camped right up to the dunes on the beach. Waking up to sounds of waves crashing and birds singing couldn't have been more relaxing. Miles of beach to walk and plenty of wild life to see. Had a group of 5 or 6 deer that grazed the dunes each morning, saw several active sea turtle nests, and plenty of marine life along the beach. Haven't seen a horseshoe crab since my vacations in Atlantic City, NJ as a boy. Hundreds of sand crabs...Jump to full entry
