Jan 31, 2018 - Florida City

We had a very full day but ended up where we started. We we on the road by 8 Florida time. We got on the #1 and headed to Key west. It only is approx 130 miles but it took us 3 1/2 hours to do it because of low speed limit and stopping at a few places. Seen damage done by the last hurricane but there was a lot of repairs done. The road was good and some construction being done on them. We took a trolly tour of Key West and got to see the historical sites and hear about the history. Very commercialized but should be expected because tourism...

We started off on 1A but speed limit is 45 max so then we went on 95 but then it was 75 with up to 6 lanes so one extreme or the other. We got on 595 at ft Lauderdale to make sure that we will bypass Miami. We got to Florida City early and got our room. The last 20 miles was either fields of maize, or plants we have no idea what they are, nurseries selling trees, plants, flowers and...

Stopped over in Florida City for the night before heading for they Keys. Planned to park at Walmart and was actually turned away. First time ever. Mar 14, 2016 - Alligator Alley

Florida City, FL With great reluctance we left Doug and Dixie and set off for new territory. We drove down the road and took a boat tour. Everglades National Park is a 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve on the southern tip of Florida. Often compared to a grassy, slow-moving river, the park is made up of coastal mangroves, sawgrass marshes and pine flatwoods that are home to hundreds of animal species. Among the Everglades' wildlife are the endangered leatherback turtle, Florida panther and West Indian manatee. Everglades is home to the...

Feb 2, 2016 - Everglades National Park

Florida National Parks Last year, I wandered aimlessly visiting random towns. I was constantly amazed that there were so many interesting places to visit and experience. It didn’t matter where or when I traveled. There were interesting places around every corner. This year, I’ll be planning my travels more with specific destinations in mind. My first was Walt Disney World, here in Florida. Next, are the National Parks. There are three National Parks in Florida: Biscayne, Everglades, and Dry Tortugas. (There are also National Preserves,...

Jan 28, 2014 - Everglades / Key West

1/28 It's only in the 40s this morning in Thonotosassa. We load up the van and head south, it's 82 degrees when we get to the Everglades National Park. We go to the visitors center and the guys get started on the JR ranger program. We get to see tons of birds, alligators and manatees. It's the first time the guys have seen alligators in the wild and they seem to be everywhere, we see at least 50 of them between along the road and at a couple of Park visitors centers. We also see a big group of manatees in one of the canals, a dozen or so....

Feb 22, 2012 - As far south as we go

Tuesday, February 21, 2012 Too slow to upload any more photos. Will have to add later. Happy Pres Day. I hope you phoned your favorite president and wished them well. And since we’ve been out of contact with the rest of the world since last Wednesday, I was glad that he answered on the first ring. I’m talking of course about Martin Van Buren the most favorite of favorite presidents so I’ve been told. We have been deep in the heart of the Everglades communing with the gators. And sweating. And loving it. But I’m jumping ahead. I’ll tell ya a...

Mar 6, 2011 - The Everglades

As we drove into Everglades National Park yesterday, Alan said, "I can't believe I'm here. I've wanted to see this my entire adult life." I thought to myself,"Why didn't I know that"? Thank goodness we are taking this new path in our lives. I'm sure we'll continue to discover things about each other that we never knew or thought to ask. According to the park website, Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. It has been designated a World Heritage Site, as well as an International Biosphere Reserve...

Mar 1, 2011 - Flamingo area of Everglades NP

Kevin and Serge went with Jeanne and me to visit the southernmost section of the Everglades National Park on the warmest day of the winter yet! But it was great, as the ocean breeze kept it from being too hot. We saw lots of birds and reptiles, including wood storks and roseate spoonbills. alligators and a crocodile! We had lunch at the furthest end of the park, in a field where people can pitch tents and camp for a couple of weeks at a time.

Feb 23, 2011 - Homestead, Fl

On the road again. We packed up enough clothes for 4 or 5 days, and put the rest of our stuff back in the storage unit until we get back. We headed out down I-275 South, enroute to Key West. It’s 403 miles from Tampa to Key West, so we decided to stop at Homestead, Florida (275 miles) for the night. It was 87 F (30 C) out today. Hot and dry! We made it to our destination in just over 6 hours. That was long enough for a first trip after 10 days of being docile. Turkey caught a horrendous cold and chest infection on his last day in Dominican....

Feb 16, 2011 - Exploring the Everglades - Part 2

From Florida City, FL, Gateway to the Everglades … Wednesday, February 16, 2011 After getting ready and packing the car with a couple of overnight bags, a cooler, cameras and binoculars … we were on the road just before 9:00am. We headed east on Hwy 80 and then south on 27. As we drove by miles and miles of sugar cane fields, we saw plumes of smoke as the sugar cane was being burned off. By 11:30, we arrived in Homestead, FL and stopped for lunch on US 1. We found a Mexican restaurant called Toro Taco which claimed to serve authentic...
