Jan 29, 2018 - Gator

Jul 25, 2017 - The Everglades to Panama

We have a flight to Panama City from Fort Lauderdale airport this evening at 5.50. We decide to stop off at the Everglades National Park for the Shark Valley tram tour which starts at 9.30. Out tram takes us around the park on a sealed road that is also used by cyclists although it's a bit warm to cycle today. We see lots of birds and a few baby alligators although the park is home to 50,000 alligators. With all the rain they have had lately in the Everglades the alligators have spread out over a larger area so they are much harder to find....

Jul 24, 2017 - Kayaks and air boats

Up at 6-15 as we are kayaking through the Everglades from 7-11am. There are 3 of us on this trip today and our guide is Dustin. We take a van with the kayaks on a trailer behind us, about 15 mins out of Everglades City. The kayaks get unloaded and we are provided with life vests and a hat with netting as the mosquitoes will be bad. This is when we apply the first lot of insect repellent too, over skin and clothes. I get the feeling there might be a few mozzies! The day will be hot but this morning is mild so far. We kayak along several...

Apr 30, 2016 - Everglades!

On the way from Bonita Springs to the Keys we went through the Everglades. Covering over 2000 square miles of Southern Florida, the everglades are home to both Big Cypress National Preserve, and Everglades National Park. We took a dirt road loop to look for some alligators. We saw a bunch, along with some beautiful and interesting scenery. The everglades are really wet and every puddle is just teeming with life. Every tree is home to a host of other plants. Orchids grow wild, and everywhere you look something is moving. The foliage is so...

Feb 27, 2016 - Everglades National Park, FL.

We were going to Everglades National Park and decided to check out the Coral Castle. Coral Castle is a stone structure built by an eccentric Latvian American. It is mostly limestone structures formed from coral. Each wall or piece weighs several tons. It is claimed that it was built single handedly by one man. It's somewhat of a legend compared to the Pyramids. Check out the pictures. It was about 30 miles through the everglades to the visitor center of Everglades National Park. There are small and large ponds along the way. Some ponds were...

Feb 17th Today was our lat day in the Everglades. It was a nice day and we just sat around the RV and listened to the radio and had our shorts on basking in the sun. That was a little bit of a mistake as we both got a mild sunburn on our legs. We sat for 7 hours doing very little, listening to the radio and except for an ocasional little nap here and there. Then about 5:30 or so we built a fire and sat some more.

Today we woke in Key West. We went to see a gardening expo in an old fort. There were many plants, flowers, trees, and shrubs on display and for sale. After the expo we walked along the beach and out a pier looking at all the folks and looking into the water for what ever we could see. We did see a few needle fish but not much else. We went to Lynn and Steve Springer's home for a visit. They know Tom and Tana and Sally knows them well from the YMCA. We had a nice time.

Today we woke a bit tired from our adventure yesterday. (I also got up early at 10 minutes till 6) We decided to take a walk. We walked from the RV to the bay. We were looking for new places to fish. After we walked all the accessable shore line we walked the trail down to the museum and marina. At the end of the breakwall we talked to a fellow who was fishing. He was catching a few. He said to use shrimp. We then went on to the marina where we again looked at the huge crokadials, the osprey nests and of course the people. We then headed...

Today we woke then headed for Key West to see Tom and Tana. Tom is Sally's brother. It should have been a 3.5 hour drive but it took us 5 hour. WE ran into 2 very slow moving areas of traffic where we were only able to go about 15 MPH. We finally made it and were able to sit and talk for a while before going out in the evening for a Valentines dinner. We ate at a Cuban restaurant called El Sebonayes. I really like their food. Afterwords we came home and talked till bedtime.
