Jul 23, 2017 - The Everglades

Leaving Key West today to drive the 126 miles back to the start of the keys and head west to the Everglades, a 5 hour drive in total. The traffic is not too bad and as we pass through No Name Key we have to slow down to let two key deer cross the highway in front of us. They are quite a small deer and roam freely on some of the keys. We had planned to stop an Anhinga Trail in the Everglades National Park for a break and a walk on the trail but we seem to be running short of time so decide to go straight to Everglades City as we are booked...

Mar 11, 2017 - Airboat ride!

At least 30 women went down to Everglades City to go on air boats through a section of the Everglades. I had been on air boats before, but going with a big group like this sounded like fun. I don't really like how the boats disturb nature because of the noise pollution and I probably won't go on another ride, but I can't say never! This one differed from the air boat ride I took last year because the driver went fast through channels amongst the mangroves to various spots to see stuff. When we came upon hte area where the raccoons lived, I...

Dec 29, 2016 - Back to the Mainland

Thursday morning, we woke up again before sunrise. The views were beautiful, but the bugs were back. Dave made another great breakfast of French toast and cinnamon buns and then we broke down camp. At low tide, the water was too far out to easily get in our boats. So we waited and enjoyed the beach for an hour or so. As the tide came in, we started paddling back. Dave took us a different way back and we spotted some dolphins and pelicans on the way. We stopped at an island near the beginning of Indian Key Pass for lunch. It would be a lot...

Dec 28, 2016 - Ten Thousand Islands

Wednesday, we woke up around sunrise and the bugs were back. Sandy and I stayed in our tent for a while and watched the raccoons out on the beach. All food was safely stored in the kayaks, so the raccoons headed into the surf to look for crabs for breakfast. Since there’s no freshwater on the island, they would drink dew off leaves. As the sun rose in the sky, the bugs died down and Dave made a great breakfast of eggs and bacon. After eating, we started our paddling tour of the Ten Thousand Islands. We first headed northwest to Round Key....

Dec 27, 2016 - Camping on Picnic Key

Tuesday morning, we woke up and had a great breakfast at Ivey House before checking out. It was just a short drive to the Gulf Coast Visitor Center. Here we met with Dave and the others in our camping group. After getting our stuff safely in dry bags and packing the kayaks, we paddled out across Chokoloskee Bay. Due to low tide, it was very mucky getting into the kayak. Once across the bay, we started paddling out towards the Gulf of Mexico through Indian Key Pass. This is also the route used by the tourist boats from Everglades City, so we...

Feb 24, 2015 - Feb 23rd

Today was a very fun day. We started the day with our exercising. The outside loop around the campground is .55 miles. We each did 4 laps. We each did 2.2 miles. A nice start to the day. Our showers were clean and had warm showers. We were quite pleased. After eating we went to Karen and Chucks for the afternoon. I wore the plaid shorts Chuck had given me with a striped tee shirt. I was quite a sight. We went to the pool and hot tub. Sally got in and I decided to try my hand at fishing the near by pond. I didn't have any luck but the...

Today we went into Naples to get some supplies and see the sights. We got groceries at WalMart and went to the library to get on the internet. It is a nice drive into Naples of about 50 miles. It's been a little cloudy and cool here, today is not much different.

Today is our last day at Midway park, tomorrow we leave for a park in north Fort Myers, called Sunseekers RV park. We are looking forward to the showers being hot. We will do like we do most of the days before moving, prepare the RV and load up what we can. Later in the evening we sat outside watching the pond and the people pass by and drank a couple of glasses of wine.

Feb 19th. It was quite cool last night low was in the high 30's. It is quite windy now. We each put on a sweatshirt and then a hooded sweat shirt and headed to shark valley. Shark Valley is a park in the Everglades that is loaded with alligators. We took our bikes and rode the 15 miles around the loop and saw many alligators and one missplaced crocodile. On the bike ride the wind was horrible. I expect it was at least 20mph. It was a very interesting ride but into the wind was quite challenging.

Feb 18th. Today was a travel day. Our next campground is about 100 miles away. It's on the Tamiami Trail about half the way between Miami and Tampa. It is called Midway. After arriving at the campground and setting up camp we traveled into a town named Evergaldes City. We were trying to get a birtday card. This was a small town and we searched for a Wal-Mart or a drug store with no luck. We were advised that a small grocery might have some. We found the grocery and we did find an acceptable birtday card. It was a bit of a task. After...

Mar 6, 2014 - Everglades City

We had a terrific day exploring Everglades City, Chokoloskee, and Ochopee. This is in and around Big Cypress. National Preserve. We wanted to see alligators. Boy, did we see alligators! Once we got into Big Cypress there were multiple alligators at every stop. We enjoyed watching them from a safe distance. Terra stayed in the Jeep! Also viewed so many birds and turtles. We also stopped to visit the Skunk Ape Research Center. In case you are wondering, a skunk ape is the sasquash of the swamp. No, we did not see one but a fun stop anyway. We...

Oct 31, 2013 - Birthday in the Everglades

From Everglades City, FL ... October 30, 2013 The night before my birthday this week, Charlie surprised me by scheduling an airboat ride in the Everglades. We got an early start to what would be one of my most memorable birthdays. I will share the events of our day with you in pictures. But first I want to mention the trip down that morning. We drove south on S.R. 29 to Everglades City. What a drive this was today. The wildlife was unbelievable. The wading birds are just starting to return to the area. Apparently they received so much...
