Feb 20, 2018 - Camp Gulf

02-20-2018 So how has 3 weeks gone by so quickly??? Monday January 29 we had a nice short ride up to Panama City area and pulled into Saint Andrews State Park. We took the “scenic route” to our camp site ( aka took a wrong turn ) but fortunately didn’t end up some place a 36 foot bus shouldn’t go. Another lesson learned ..... we had a nice level site facing the bay. And as all of our other stops have been, many new friendly neighbors.! We had large sandy beaches to enjoy, a lot of wildlife to enjoy, and the weather was great. On February...

Nov 22, 2016 - DESTIN FLORIDA

We arrived in Destin Florida to visit my Sister Burma and her sweetheart Danny Lee. They live in DeFuniak Springs Florida. We went out to see their home and I loved how they have remodeled everything. They are still building and adding upgrades. She has beautiful wood floors throughout. Danny is building her a huge walk-in closet. They have plenty of land for gardens and she wants chickens but has to build a fence to keep out critters that would kill them. We ate at McGuire’s Irish Pub. A quaint restaurant that has dollar bills covering the...

Aug 19, 2016 - Paradise and a Parking Lot

After 5 days in Charleston, we headed toward Savannah, Georgia with a long stop at Camping World to resolve a few RV issues (none resolved!). We did a quick stroll through Savannah's City Market, then toured the Fort Jackson memorial (Ossy jumped 5 feet when the canon went off). As I was looking at the possible routes back to the Houston area from Savannah, I realized I could go by Destin, Florida (which I have never been, but heard fabulous things about). So, I booked a docked houseboat at the Destin Harborwalk for a few days. We drove all...

Gypsy Journey

Aug 9, 2015 - Destin, FL

Last night I got to see my best friend in high school's baby sister for the first time in over 30 years. It was great catching up and meeting her husband. He is into golf so Kerry and Kurt hit it off. Hopefully, we will get to see them again soon either when Kurt comes to Alberta on business or the next time we go to Jacksonville Beach. It was sad saying good by to Mum Mum and John but knowing they are planning on visiting us next June to attend Hailey's grad made it easier. We headed out early this morning and made good time to Destin /...

Jan 20, 2015 - What is happening?

Something mysterious is happening to us...we've been going to bed earlier, sleeping in later than usual, going to dinner much earlier than normal. What is going on here? Today, after going for a brisk walk, riding our new bikes, eating a healthy lunch...we decide to go across the street to the "kool area". We start at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville. It's Happy Hour...so two drinks later we hear music next door. Now we're in a huge, happy, band playing...but wait! We look around, we Think we're the youngest couple there...but who knows?...

May 20, 2014 - More days in Paradise

I am sort of loosing track of the day number at this point. We are still at Topsail. We changed sites but now have two more days here. It is still beautiful. We have been hanging out with Patti and her friend, Bob. We visited at their condo in Blue Mountain Beach. It is really gorgeous. We had a great supper with them by the pool on Sunday night and on Monday night we all went out to Stinky's for dinner. With a name like that, the food has to be good and it was. Today we are just being lazy and will spend some more time down at the...

May 18, 2014 - Days in Paradise

Days 8, 9 and 10 Topsail Hill State Park It rained almost all day on Wednesday but we were curled up safely in our little site at Gulf SP. On Thursday morning we awoke to find that it had turned cold and it was very windy. We broke camp and headed east towards Pensacola. We stopped at the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. This is really an impressive site. Located on the Naval base, which is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, the museum consist of two huge buildings, filled with naval aircraft and memorabilia. It would take all...

Dec 17, 2013 - New and Old Friends in Destin

We had a very busy week in Destin and we arrived with both sadness and anticipation. Sad because Destin is our last stop in our two month tour of Florida. Anxious because we're meeting our friends Roger and Gail who we volunteered with last summer at Chickasaw. In addition, we're going to meet some new folks - Rod and Diane Thatcher. Rod is the brother of Lloyd who is our next door neighbor in Mission, Texas. We're staying at Destin West RV Resort which is just outside of Destin on Okaloosa Island. It's a very nice park that sits on the...

Oct 17, 2013 - Cruzin the Strip

The beach scene here is very impressive at dusk. We had dinner at Pompano Joe’s. It’s a casual seafood restaurant right on the beach about three miles from our RV Park. It was pack with a 10 minute waiting line at 5:30pm during the off season. I had a tuna steak with hush puppies. It was good, but not great. The outside seating made up for the quality of food. We had ocean side outside seating at dusk. It made for a great ambiance. After dinner, we drove back in the MINI with the windows down, rock music blaring and we were tapping the...

Oct 16, 2013 - It’s White and it’s not snow.

The most beautiful beaches that we have encountered are along the Alabama and the Florida panhandle shoreline. The sand is so white it is blinding. We are in Destin Florida. It’s located on a strand of beach land off of the main land. The area is growing leaps and bounds with all kinds of shopping, restaurants, big name hotels, golf courses, resorts, and of course, beaches. It has a family atmosphere. We like it here. The middle of October is the perfect time to be here with mild weather and the off-season crowds. It is not a good location...

Apr 22, 2013 - Destin, Florida

The day after we left Galveston, they got several inches of rain. Unfortunately, it caught up with us in Louisiana, cutting short our visit to Abita Springs, Fortunately, there is a casino right on the Gulf at Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, where we overlooked the water until it was time to go to Destin. We stayed 5 minutes from the Gulf in Miramar Beach, and got in some relaxing motorcycle rides, a few bites of seafood, and some great walks along the boardwalk. Although the area is more frequented when school is not in session, we found it...

Mar 31, 2013 - The Gulf Coast to Destin

My last stop - Dauphin Island - is a bit of a let down. Another barrier island replete with fort and tourists. But the homes are boxes on stilts. Not much in the way of interest. From here I drive the FJ onto a ferry that crosses the mouth of Mobile Bay. For the drive home I avoid the Interstate and hug the coast. Through the beach towns of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Perdido and Pensacola. A friend sent me a You Tube link that I'd like to share - Playing for Change - an effort to record musicians from all over the world playing together...
