Sep 12, 2016 - Chore day

We woke up at 6:30 so we could leave for the eye Dr by 7:30. Earliest we've been up since we got up for the launch of the Orion off of Florida in 2013. Got there and after an hour they said come back at 2 once the insurance is approved. So off to do laundry and waste 4 hours. Got the oil changed at jiffy lube and was afraid bill was going to go off on the idiot at the desk. But it was finally done and back to the dr for another 1.5 hours. This all called for a $3 pint at steamWorks and another at Carver brewing. We ate a sw pizza- chili's,...

We left the Butte to head to Durango so Bill can get his eye shot tomorrow morning. We drove down hwy 149 out of Gunnison and went through Lake City, Creede, and Pagosa springs to get to Durango. This route took us over several mtn passes ranging from 10-12,000 ft. Durango is a cool mtn town where we would move if we had our pick of towns. Not sure how cold it gets in winter but it sure is nice now! We're staying at the Junction creek cg about 5 miles out of Durango. Nice quiet cg at 7600 ft so we feel like it's too easy to breathe.

We were lucky enough to get an RV space right next to Don and Sue. We spent the evening visiting, comparing notes of what we'd each seen and formulating a plan for the next...

July 12 Today we rode the narrow gauge Durango and Silverton railroad. It follows the Animas river from Durango through the mountains to Silverton. We were gone almost 12 hours. Poor Cody had to stay in the trailer as dogs were not allowed on the train. One of the campground hosts looked in on him periodically to take him to the dog park. He was really glad to see us at the end of the day. July 13 Today we just stayed around the local area and took the day off. Went to do laundry and a Walmart run. Tomorrow we leave Durango for Ouray CO....

July 10 Today was sort of a rest day. Went to Walmart to get things we left home without. Then just hung around the campsite and relaxed all day. Dianna needs the rest. On the second day out Dianna slipped on a kids play area and landed right on her butt. Did not break anything but it hurt for a number of days. The good news was that her sciatic nerve issue stopped. Maybe she should fall on her butt more often. Then today she developed a red eye condition in her left eye. Our nurse practitioner says as long as she does not develop any other...

After 5 long days on the road we finally pulled in to Durango Colorado. Seems like I was going against the wind most of the way. Cody was an excellent traveler and enjoyed the new smells at every stop. Our site is right by a little creek so it is nice to sit outside. Most of the campgrounds we will stay in have WiFi so we can keep in touch with what is going on. We also brought our home phone to receive calls. More later.

We are still in Durango. But, we are getting ready to move on. Really! We decide to make today a motorcycle day. If you live in this part of the country, you talk of hills, passes, elevations and percent grades. The day we were in town, we asked if there was a restaurant in walking distance. “Remember, we are flatlanders.” “No problem, there is only a 9 percent grade.” He was kidding. Between us and Cortez Colorado is Hesperus Hill. We have heard that it is a hard climb. The same 9% kidder gives us an alternate route. My concern is that...

John reminds me that today is Friday the 13th. Great! We are up very early. We plan to get into Durango before there is any traffic. The RV is supposed to be drivable. It does not take long to find out that it is not. The motor shuts down. We pull off the road. We call Good Sam’s. Good Sam’s tells us to call back in fifty minutes when the tow shops open. What can we do? It is a long story but we end up with two tow trucks. The larger one is needed and things work out as they should. We get to ride in the RV into town. I can take great...

It is a relaxing day. I make reservations for the train ride on Saturday. I sign us up for Friday and Saturday night here at the KOA. Our KOA Hostess offers to give us a ride to pick up our motorcycle. This is what I like about KOA. Having the motorcycle makes us mobile again. We ride into town. We find the muffler shop. We stop at the train depot to pick up our tickets. We make a Walmart stop for a few odds and ends. Back at the campground, I do the laundry. John continues to work on getting the old map off the side of the RV. We are...

Today goes almost as we expect. We are up early after a good night’s sleep. Our mechanic and his father do not show until 10:30 but they call. They are very busy! High altitudes and mountain climbing is hard on RV’s. It takes longer than expected to drop the fuel tank to get to the fuel pump. Of course. It is an RV. We are made very comfortable as we wait. The fuel pump gets installed and two other minor problems get fixed. The fuel pump was original to the RV. It was due! John and the mechanic go for a test drive. The fuel pump is now...

Again our day has two stories. We have a wonderful drive from Chama to twenty miles east of Durango. Fifteen miles east of Durango, we break down. The Wonderful Ride: Since we do not have internet service, we treat ourselves to a breakfast out. There is a café next to our RV Park. It is a great start to the day. We leave Chama. I am expecting a hard climb to get over the Continental Divide. To the north, there is a pass at every crossing. We see a sign for an historical marker. We almost miss it. We are at the Continental Divide. Well,...
