Oct 8, 2017 - Willits

Our trip on Sunday became an adventure. We planned to stay in Redding but Hwy 299 was closed due to fire. Consequently we drove south on 101 until we got about 8 miles from Willits. About 10 pm my phone gave me an alert that conditions were bad for the threat of a fire. We looked at each other and wondered what that meant for us. The next morning the campground owner came to us to tell us Hwy 101 was closed because of fires. If we went back north on 101 we would be going 240+ miles out of our way. We couldn't go west and south because...

Apr 20, 2017 - Rock Slide Delay

We started our day with a beautiful drive through wine country with miles of vineyards. It was outstanding, miles of mountains and streams reminded us so much of the Smokey Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee. We got off to a great start, we had planned to drive about 175 miles to the Yreka, California area. We made it about 100 miles to Leggett, California before we saw a sign on Highway 101 saying turn around, 101 is closed ahead, you must take another route. The only problem, we were in the motorhome pulling our car, there wasn’t a...

May 16, 2016 - Two Week Recap

Here is a brief recap of our two week stay in Willits, visiting Linda and Ray. We did not have WiFi in our rig during our stay, nor cable tv. John spent most of his time at home, alone with the kids, doing puzzles or playing on the computer. I spent most of my time busy with my bestie, Linda. -- We enjoyed our stay at the Park very much, mostly because it was next door to our friends, Linda and Ray, but also because of the peace and beauty of the area. We also enjoyed a multitude of wild life, including birds, rabbits, deer, and wild...

May 6, 2016 - Visiting the Besties

We visited Uncle Steve one more time, and were told that he was having a better day. However, it was hard for us to tell. I was thinking about how he always careful to eat good and took care of himself, walking his French bulldog Zola every day. And then, to end up like this. It is jus too sad for words. -- We said our goodbyes to Auntie Squeak and headed north again on Sunday. Our destination was Willits, in Northern California, where our best friends, Linda and Ray live. We were happy to see that the green continues in this part of...

Jun 5, 2015 - Willits, California

We said our good-byes to our pets and we left our home in Hickman at 7 AM this morning. We crossed the Richmond Bridge at 9:39 AM after paying a $20 toll. As we were leaving the bridge we could see San Quentin Prison on the left. At 9:46 we entered 101 North taking the scenic route up through the wine country. The roads are OK for big rigs just take your time and slow down on the curves. Our first stop is Willits, CA where we will spend the night at KOA. We traveled 231 miles today and the weather has been perfect - in the 80's. We are...

May 14, 2015 - The Countdown is Official!

Whenever we are in Fortuna, we have lunch at our favorite locals place to eat: Gills By the Bay. John and I discovered this tiny little place by accident when we first stayed here a few years ago. We were driving and trying to get close to the beach. Gill's is located at the end of a road that leads out to the bay, although you can't see the water. In fact, there really isn't any good beaches in the area that we could find. We both enjoyed the special of the day at Gill's: a grilled crab sandwich, and it was excellent as always. All of...

Pretty Damn Nice!

Sep 23, 2014 - In search of sunshine and wine . . .

. . . and not necessarily in that order. The weather forecast is for rain starting tomorrow morning, and I think we've seen enough redwood trees to last a while (there will be more later). So we are heading for wine country -- Sonoma and Napa. We decided to stop part way at a KOA in the strange little town of Willits. The campground is out in the country, sort of, and made for families with kids. There's an old west arcade, ice cream parlor, games and all kinds of stuff for kids to do, not necessarily old folks. But the best part is the...

Jan 6, 2014 - Almost home

We headed out from Bakersfield on a very familiar route, having spent many years going this way any time we headed North. The weather was nice, though we clearly saw the need for rain in the area. On the north side of the highway the primary crops seemed to be dust and tumbleweeds; the south side, with much irrigation, was showing some greenery from farm crops. The almond orchards we passed had not begun to show any green as yet. Traffic was not too bad so we made good time to our next park west of Lodi. Linda’s brother came down the next...

Oct 22, 2013 - KOA happens

We had another leisurely drive today...only 148 miles to Willits, CA where we will spend two nights "resting up". Haha! Traffic was light, the weather was perfect, roadways were dry and we traveled on mostly repaved Hwy 101. The state must be spending some money on roadways. The drive through Northern California redwoods is one of the most spectacular we have seen during our seven plus years as full timers and the many trips through the area on vacations. I forget from one time to the next that the place is very special and very much worth...

Aug 29, 2013 - Beautiful Drive Thru Redwoods

You can't beat the northern CA redwoods & Pacific Ocean for spectacular views. We saw spectacular views in Canada & Alaska but these are awesome, too. We were happy to get off I-5 & onto the Redwood Hwy. We don't like driving on freeways & I-5 is so rough! We'll take 2-lane roads & curves over freeways any day. We made it another almost 400 miles today & it was another long day but the scenery made it easier. We're spending the night in Sleepy Hollow RV Park outside Willits - where we stayed on our first night out in April. It's a Passport...

Jun 18, 2013 - Yosemite

Monday & Tuesday, June 17 & 18 – As we headed from Death Valley to Yosemite National Park, we continued to enjoy the beautiful Sierra Nevada’s with their glaciers. By 9:30 AM, we started up Tioga Pass toward Yosemite. The road wound higher and higher, 8000’, then 9000’ above sea level, and the temperature kept dropping. Jean could feel the symptoms of thin air, and hoped we would not have to go too much higher. At the entrance we used our National Park Pass and started our journey through Yosemite at 9945 feet above sea level. We wound our...

Nov 7, 2012 - A two-nighter in Willits

An easy 118 mile cruise this morning brought us into Willits before noon...a perfect short travel day. The weather was excellent, traffic was very light and there were no construction stops along the route. We always enjoy driving through the beautiful redwood forests in northern California, and today didn't disappoint us. Bright sunlight filtering through the massive trees is always an awesome sight. We rolled into the Willits KOA after the short uneventful drive and easily found our way to a nice sight set back in fall colored trees. I'm...
