Nov 1, 2011 - Happy Halloween

Of course with many small children in this family Halloween is a long anticipated event. But it doesn't happen until 5'ish. So Jim went surfing in the morning. Shirley and I finalized the camper reorg and Elyse went to school then to visit her grandparents (Julianna's folks) who just came back from a cruise. There was still time before the ghosts and goblins came out so Jim, Shirley and I drove to the beach and did 6 miles along the ocean on our bikes. Another beautiful day is SOCAL. Then we all arrived at Tom and Mary's house (my nephew...

Oct 31, 2011 - Take me out to the ballgame

The highlight of the day for me was to watch Bobby Strachan play second base on his travel baseball game. You see there was another Bobby Strachan that at 12 played second base, that would be me. How neat to watch him play. Another flawless day weather wise and a great morning for a ball game. This was an exhibition game and all players hit although only 9 players in the field. Bobby officially was 0 for 1 with a walk, stolen base and scored on an exciting play at the plate from second on a single to center. He fielded his position...

Oct 30, 2011 - First and 10

Yesterdays big activity was going to see my grand nephew's Pop Warner football game. Bobby Strachan is quite an athlete. He played cornerback on defense, was on both the kick off teams, and held for point after and field goal attempts. He even played 2 plays at quarterback! I was very impressed. It was a beautiful day for football. Not a cloud in the sky and temps in the upper 60's at game time. Good crowd for little league football. Bobby is 12 so I expect there are age groupings. The Strachans were well represented in the stands and...

Oct 29, 2011 - Almost like being at home

We were able to mix some fun with work yesterday. We found out the other day that our next door neighbor from Decatur (Atlanta area) was visiting her sister 4 miles away from Jim and Julie's house! So off we went on our bikes to visit with Linda Graham. It was like old home week. We had last seen Linda and her husband Billy in Western New York around the 4th of July (pics and stories were posted). Well Linda looked great and we visited with her sister and brother in law for about an hour. When we got back on our bikes I said to Shirley this...

Oct 28, 2011 - Another Newport

We have been to Newport RI on our great adventure and yesterday we went to Newport Beach CA, one of my favorite California places. Shirley, Julie, Elyse and I drove the short distance to Newport Beach, had lunch and toured the harbor via boat. What a beautiful day. Bright sun and temps in the mid 70s and no wind. A great day on the water. The least expensive home in Newport Beach is $6 million. Many famous people live here. My fave was Bill Medley's (Righteous Brothers) house. After the cruise we hit the Balboa Pier and another Ruby's for...

Oct 27, 2011 - Surf City USA

Yesterday's big adventure was a 20 mile round trip bike ride to Huntington Beach CA which is known as Surf City USA. And yes there were plenty of surfers in their wet suits. Don't remember wet suits in the Frankie Avalon beach movies (certainly Annette didn't wear one). It was another beautiful day and we walked the pier, ate lunch at famous Ruby's at the end, and toured the main street area. Jim, Julie and Elyse are packing up their borrowed camper and heading out to the Arizona dunes to sell sand masks, flags and poles (for the sand...

Oct 26, 2011 - It never rains in California

A rather laid back day and that was fine. Shirley's big event was a 10.5 mile hike around the flat terrain of this area. Mine was completely cleaning the outside of the camper (including bug removal and the roof). AND the big honkin' dually is dent free!! We had hail damage from the tornadoes we dodged in the spring but we did get hail damage on our hood. The camper has a rubber roof so no damage there. The truck looks wonderful AND they cleaned it inside and out! Shirley also treated the whole gang (Jim, Julie, Elyse and me) to her famous...

Oct 25, 2011 - Monday Monday

A laid back day for us travellers. It is quite a treat for us to be kicking back and enjoying family. Our rugged day included a neighborhood bike ride, a stop at the park, Shirley worked on the camper to fix some minor things, we ordered pizza in and watched the World Series and Monday Night Football. Tough duty. I also took the big honkin' dually to the body shop to have the hail damage from the spring tornadoes looked at. They have the truck to work on today and should have it done by afternoon. Paint-less Dent Repair it is called. Having...

Oct 24, 2011 - The Strachan Clan

We left Oxnard and headed to Orange County California where a significant amount of my relatives live. On our way we stopped and visited with an old radio buddy of mine Tom Sperry who was at his fiance's house in Orange County. We have not seen Tom in 27 years and let me tell you he has not aged a bit. A man on the go as he works the overnight shift in a credit card processing company and is an entertainer by day. He has an act and has quite a following in the retirement complexes around the Simi Valley area. We have kept up with each other...
