Oct 9, 2017 - a bummer

If you ate any fruit, vegetables or nuts today, chances are they came from California's central valley. Most likely the water the farmers used to irrigate those crops came from northern California. During the Great Depression the Shasta Dam was built to control flooding from the Sacramento River, generate hydroelectric power, and back up the river for 35 miles. This water provides northern Californians with recreational opportunities and the farmers a way to water their crops. We wanted to take a tour which included a boat ride on Lake...

Oct 8, 2017 - Mt. Shasta

We are camped in Weed, California, a town name that surely engenders lots of comments and jokes. The campground owners told us that the town is named after its founding father, a man who harvested lumber which is still in plentiful supply. Mt. Shasta is within view, a mountain that looks much more dramatic from the highway than when you drove up onto it. It's on national forest lands and except for hiking trails and tent campgrounds appears quite undeveloped and wild. We should have expected, but had nevertheless forgotten, that when you...

Apr 27, 2017 - Redding, no - up to Weed

Up early today to drive to Redding Elks. We drove over to I-5 then Hwy 99. All through this area are produce farms: lettuce, strawberries, then orchards of peaches, citrus and almonds along Hwy 99. About an hour away from Redding I called the lodge to see if they had RV openings. They said they were "Wide Open", but when we arrived, they were FULL. Okay, so we continued North to Weed, to stay at Trailer Lane RV Park (we have stayed here before) where the owner is a Shasta Elk who allows Elks members a 20% disc. After setting up we went to...

Aug 31, 2016 - Stuck in Weed

Our saga continues: -- We spent the night in the vista point with a view of Mount Shasta. It was very dark and quiet, except for the occasional truck flying by on the highway. The stars were spectacular. John and I always hope for a perfect night sky with lots of bright stars, but there is always too much ambient light. I remember being excited when we talked about going to Alaska and thinking how beautiful the stars must be there, only to discover that it never gets dark in Alaska in the summer. -- But it gets dark at the Mt. Shasta Vista...

Pretty Damn Nice!

Aug 3, 2015 - You never know....

Yesterday was our first month anniversary and we think of ourselves as "newbies" We are always under the assumption everyone in every park knows more than us. We pulled in yesterday afternoon and I was backing dad in and wondered if we were too close to open our slide unobstructed. An older gentleman was walking by and said," I have really great depth perception and you have plenty of room!" :) I thanked him, gave Dad the ok and came inside. Dad stayed out and the two of them visited until "Jeff" finally said,"well it's martini time!" Dad...

Aug 1, 2015 - So back to Weed

Well this is all new :) So not too sure how often...How lengthy...But, After we left the smokey campground 7 days ago and headed for TT in Morgan Hill CA to settle in for work, we arrived at sunset. We were hot, (yes both of us) tired, (especially Scott), so you can imagine how cranky we were to arrive at the gate of TT and be recieved by a woman attendant who could double as a Marine Sergeant (sorry Nicolas :)) who barked out rules faster than we could record them, charged us $5 extra per day for an "upgraded" site, and informed us that...

Aug 24, 2012 - Weed, CA

Another morning at Peterson Machinery Company, the Cat shop in Eugene, Oregon. They think it is the ECM unit that is bad. They hooked a test ECM unit to the coach and we did two test drives for a total of 26.7 miles. They do not have an ECM unit on hand and cannot get one until early Monday morning. I departed the shop for a nearby campground at 12:10PM with the text ECM connected. I went one tenth of a mile towards the gate and the coach quit again. I left the coach running and walked back into the shop. They had all left for lunch so I...

Jun 26, 2012 - Weed, CA

We only traveled about 80 miles today from Redding to the city of Weed. We are almost at the base of Mt. Shasta which is beautiful. We have stopped for a couple days just to see how many photo’s we can take of the amazing mountain. The Mt. Shasta Elks Lodge does not have RV parking but 10 miles north (in Weed) is a private campground owned by an Elk member that gives Elks a 20% discount. We visited the Mt. Shasta Elks lodge and were awed by their beautiful carved wooden bar. Then upon recommendation by a couple Elks, went to dinner at the...

May 6, 2012 - Friendly RV Park, Weed, CA

While at Friendly RV Park we met two great people, Kevin and Wendy Bent, and their four dogs from Abbotsford Canada. I was sitting outside, with Toby tied up on his long teather, reading. The Bents returned to their trailer and their four dogs immediately came bounding over to say hello. Immediately Toby started to bristle and had a few "words" with a couple of their dogs. This lasted a couple of seconds until I got hold of Toby. Wendy came over and Kathy apologized saying that Toby has aggressive issues with other dogs. Wendy basically...
