Apr 11, 2017 - Sonoma to Truckee

April 11, 2017 Even before we leave Sonoma we have changed our initial travel plans! We don’t have snow tires or chains ( a major ordeal to get them on rear dual tires.) Our first stop is Truckee to visit our dear friend, Leslie. It is supposed to snow that night just a bit. Rather than take HWY 50 we will travel the very boring HWY 80 to Elko, NV. No decent place to camp there other than residential camp spots so will look for a Best Western. We then expect unseasonably warm weather through Park City and the Rockies. We will see....

Jun 8, 2014 - Head for the Mountains!

The Sunday forecast for Sacramento was for a high of 104 degrees. We decided that it would be a good day to head for the mountains. Annie hopped in the CRV and we headed east on I-80 toward Truckee, CA. It was a two-hour uphill drive that landed us at Northstar Ski Resort at about 6000 feet in altitude. Through an unnecessarily complex process we obtained lift tickets and headed for the gondola to gain some more altitude. The gondola was a new experience for Annie and she wasn’t at all happy about boarding. Once on board she settled down...

Jun 4, 2014 - Winnemucca, NV to Truckee, CA

June 4, 2014 Nice cool evening for sleeping. We didn’t even wake up until 8:00 even though I remember the sun coming up around 5:30. I had promised Bob pancakes. The truth of the matter is that we had little else on board! We were on our way to Truckee by 9:30. Leslie was waiting for us with cold cut sandwiches and Sierra Nevada Hoptimum beer. Sat out on the deck with the wonderful smell of pine. Is actually warm, 83 degrees. Leslie and I took a walk while Bob read the NYT. Nonstop chatter catching up on family, trip etc. Leslie had...

Jun 17, 2013 - Lake Tahoe

This morning we took off for Lake Tahoe. Last time we were here, we took a paddle wheel boat ride around the lake. One of the things we saw while we were on the boat was Emerald Bay. We were talking to someone we met at the park this morning and he was telling us about driving around Emerald Bay...a perfect drive. We drove around the lake to Emerald Bay and got some beautiful pictures. On the way, we saw a turnout...of course, there was no parking, but we found a place we could pull off the road and climb down the rocks for some incredible...

Jun 8, 2013 - Truckee, CA and Donner Summit & Pass

Another day of adventure out of Reno. The weather report said that Reno would be over a 100 so we decided it would be a good time to head to the mountains. Our first adventure, we drove thru Truckee, CA, didn't stop because it was a lot of people due to the beer feast that was happening that day. So on to the Donner Summit, the summit that the Donner party was trying to make during that harsh winter that killed so many of the their party. After we left the summit we wanted to find the monument at Donner Pass. This monument was built as high...

2013 - Here we come

Apr 28, 2013 - Hell's Highway

We kept driving east on Interstate 80 which brought us past Sacramento to a small place called Truckee, CA. This past winter we watched a few sessions of Hell's Highway on TV, the story being about the dangers of the Donner Pass in wintertime. In summer it is very picturesque with the old Donner Pass going back and forward higher and higher over the pass. After this adventure we went south along Lake Tahoe a beautiful peaceful water surrounded on every side by mountains and seemingly a play place for the rich and famous. Since we wanted to...

Apr 18, 2013 - Sonoma to Truckee, CA

Last year at this time Bob and I were a bit anxious as we packed for our first “rig” adventure in over 40 years as well as packing up our house that will be rented through VRBO while we are gone. Having traveled for 4 months last year throughout the western US and Canada and renting our house, we have been fairly casual in preparing for our trip. Of course our packing and preparation lists for the house and rig are more refined which makes life a lot easier. Sadly, we did not have to get Pepper ready. We do miss him! This will be a 7,000...

Aug 20, 2012 - to Lake Tahoe CA; 16/216

120820-Mon-66487-Today we ended at 667418, started at 66487 miles, for total miles today of 261. We are now in Truckee (Lake Tahoe) CA. I think I have a plug wire burnt, which I hope to get fixed in the next couple of days. It is missing and this unit is known for burnt plug wires. We went thru some beautiful country, but north of where we went there was a wild fire, as we could see the smoke and smell it. It is fine here. We made reservations to take a lake cruise tomorrow.

Jul 10, 2012 - Week Eight: July 4 -10 ( Okinagen, Penticton, WA, OR, Redwoods, Truckee)

Day 1, July 4th, we awakened to gorgeous sunshine & a rapidly warming morning. Nearly 60. I donned my American flag t-shirt in honor of the holiday. We departed Vernon & mid-morning, we were in huge Kelowna (pop. 107,000.) Begun in 1859 as a mission, today its burgeoning economy is based on fruit growing, manufacturing, tourism & retirees. There are also several lush vinyards & wineries in the area. We crossed beautiful Okinagan Lake on a high bridge from which we viewed its busy shoreline peppered with boats of all sizes. We also saw...

Sep 14, 2011 - Donner Pass

Today we visited the beautiful Sierra Nevada, Donner Memorial State Park and the Emigrant Trail Museum. The huge Pioneer Monument was built to commemorate those who emigrated to California from the east in the mid-1800's. Included in the museum are displays and information about one of the earliest pioneer wagon trains, the Donner Party, forced by circumstances to camp at the east end of Donner Lake in the winter of 1846-47, resulting in human suffering and loss of life. The park encompasses Scallenberger Ridge to the south of Donner Lake....
