May 13, 2012 - Carrizo Plain (Day 9) - A Relaxing Sunday at Home

(Ron Writing) We spent the day relaxing, reading, and playing games here at Carrizo. I visited with our neighbor Bob again for quite awhile. He’s a nice guy and very interesting to talk with. Each morning and evening he goes for a ride on his motorcycle exploring some of the roads and trails around here. He has many interesting stories from his lifetime of travel to over 100 countries all around the world. The weather was unusual today. By early afternoon it was up to 91° and the wind was calm. Then suddenly about 2 PM we got a strong wind...

May 12, 2012 - Carrizo Plain (Day 8) - Another Relaxing Day

(Ron Writing) I met Bob our campground neighbor today and we had long interesting conversation about many topics. He’s a retired orthodontist from Del Mar, CA but spends most of this time traveling the world. He loves to “trek” well off the beaten path and explore interesting places. He also has a small home in Costa Rica where he spends much of the winter surfing. Our owl friends spent, what seems to have become, one of their routine days roosting all day in about the same places and they flying off for their hunt at sunset. We had a...

May 11, 2012 - Carrizo Plain (Day 7) - Owl Update

(Ron Writing) We spent another quiet day at Carrizo. We were the only ones in the campground until late this afternoon when one other camper came in and is spending the night here. This morning both adult owls and the chick were back in the large tree where they were last seen. By late morning the male had left his roost and I was unable to locate him the rest of the day. The female and the chick spent the day together on a large limb high in the tree. Just before sunset I went out to watch them and waited patiently for them to leave the...

May 10, 2012 - Carrizo Plain NM (Day 6) - Cooler Weather

(Ron Writing) Since we arrived at Carrizo it’s been getting a little warmer each day. Yesterday’s high of around 90° convinced us it was probably time to move on and find a cooler place to call home for a while. But, it felt noticeably cooler this morning and there was a nice breeze, and we had the campground all to ourselves, and it is just so nice and peaceful here that we decided to stay another day. The high today was 86. We had the campground all to ourselves the entire day except for the folks that came to clean the restrooms and a...

May 9, 2012 - Carrizo Plains NM (Day 5) - Another Peaceful Day

(Ron Writing) By the time we got up this morning the “snake wranglers” were already gone so I didn’t get to find out how many more rattlesnakes they caught yesterday afternoon. The other two campers left this morning also and we ended up having the campground to ourselves all day and it looks like we’ll be the only ones here tonight – very peaceful. The only problem is that it’s been getting warmer every day. Today it got up in the low 90’s but luckily there was a nice breeze all day. We spent much of the day sitting out under the awning...

May 8, 2012 - Carrizo, NM (Day 4) - More of the Owl Saga

(Ron Writing) We stayed around the campground most of the day enjoying the beautiful weather and relaxing. There was a little excitement in camp today. First Elena noticed a small (18”) snake slithering right past the lawn chair she was sitting in. It passes just a couple feet from her before she noticed it. It was not a rattlesnake and did not appear to be venomous. I used a long rod to “transport” it out to the grassy area away from the campsite. About an hour later the neighbor’s dog started growling at a much larger snake about 5 yards...

May 7, 2012 - Carrizo Plain NM (Day 3) - Our Chick is Out of the Nest

(Ron Writing) We spent another beautiful relaxing day in our campground. There are two other campers here and we enjoyed visiting with them. One couple is from Paso Robles and brought a horse with them. There are corrals here at the campground and it’s a great place to ride on trails in the foothills to the west of the campground. Much of the day was spent watching and photographing the resident great horned owls. Today the chick was out of the nest and sitting on a large nearby branch. What a beauty. Then we were also able to spot two...

May 6, 2012 - Carrizo Plain NM (Day 2) - Watching Owls

(Ron Writing) The two other overnight campers here left this morning and then we had the campground to ourselves the rest of the day. The weather was perfect. I did a few odd jobs, found some abandoned firewood and split some of it, and spent quite a bit of time watching and photographing a great horned owl chick sitting in a nest in one of the large eucalyptus trees in the center of the campground. She’s a beauty and sat in the nest all day. It has such thick downy feathers it almost looked like a furry mammal when we first saw it. We...

May 5, 2012 - Carrizo Plain NM, CA - Visiting A Favorite Spot

(Ron Writing) We left Barbara and Archie’s house about 9 AM and drove over to the Elks Club to dump and then to the F&B Rentals to refill both propane tanks. Then we headed north on I-5 to just past the Grapevine where we picked up HW 166 west. We took 166 to the south entrance of Carrizo National Monument and drove about 20 miles northwest through the park to the KCL campground ($0/night). This is our third consecutive year visiting this place in the spring. When we arrived there were only two sites occupied and we got our favorite spot...

May 3, 2010 - Bakersfield, CA - Had to Leave Carrizo NM

(Ron Writing) Yesterday was another beautiful day. There’s no church around here but we listened to one of Pastor Glenn’s lessons which are mailed to us weekly as a CD recording. Later we took a hike on the trail leading up the creek behind the campground. There were still many flowers blooming there – especially poppies and some white and yellow flowers. We hiked about a mile or so until the trail got very narrow and then turned back to avoid any rattle snake encounters. Late yesterday afternoon we had a campfire and fixed our supper over...

May 1, 2010 - Carrizo Plain NM (Day 5) - Painted Rock Tour

(Ron Writing) This morning we drove up to the north end of the park for a 10AM tour led by a BLM employee. There were about 35 people on the tour; most of them just here for a one-day outing from towns in the surrounding area. We first went up to Overlook Hill just west of Soda Lake. Then the guide took us down to the boardwalk along Soda Lake and explained various aspects of the flora and fauna. Soda Lake still has water in it which is quite unusual for this late in the spring. It generally only has water for a couple months during the...

Apr 30, 2010 - Carrizo Plain NM (Day 4) - The San Andreas Fault

(Ron Writing) Yesterday it was very cool, cloudy, and quite windy so we spent most of the day indoors. We did go for a couple walks around the campground to get a little exercise. Today it’s still cool but it was mostly sunny with beautiful white puffy clouds. Not much wind. We drove north back to the visitor center. On the way we found a spot where we could get on the internet and download our email. It was very slow but at least it worked. It was much too slow to try to do the blog and photos. The visitor center was open and we enjoyed...
