Sep 2, 2016 - Susanville, CA

This will be a really quick update, our WiFi is very slow here. We drove about 180 miles from Yreka to Susanville today. It was a beautiful drive through tons of tall pines, I think they are Ponderosa Pines. We could also see more of Mount Shasta and other snow-capped mountains on the drive. We saw a truck that had flipped over, not sure if the driver fell asleep or what. It must have just happened because there was a long line of traffic trying to get by it. So sad to see, it was a mess. We will be in Susanville for a few days before...

Jul 14, 2016 - Eagle Lake RV Park

Had a great stay at the Park with friends Greg, Ginny, Don and Lucienne. G&G had their 5th wheel and arrived a day earlier and D&L rented one of the cabins. Great view of the Sierra's and Lake from our sites, good food (including home made pizza on the grills) and beverage and much more. Sleeping was easy after being out in the fresh high altitude (5,600'+-) air and night time temps in the 50's. We returned home Sunday the 17th. Eagle Lake RV Park Check their Photo Gallery. Aug 12, 2015 - Eagle Lake - Merrill Campground, CA

Flew back to Reno from Green Bay last Friday after spending time with family and friends at our granddaughter Ella's funeral. Miss her dearly and our thoughts will be with us forever. Prayers for parents, daughter Kimi and Ed. Sunday we pulled up to Eagle Lake 14 miles norh of Susanville to one of our favorite places to relax...Eagle Lake - Merrill Campground. We have many photos to view from previous visits. With kids back in school the park is pretty much open with except for some 'old folks' like us. We head back to Reno Friday where...

May 29, 2015 - Eagle Lake - Merrill Campground, CA

On the road again! Arrived at Merrill Campground Wednesday around noon after a 2:30 drive from Reno. Located on the South end of Eagle Lake this campground still is one of our favorites. Weather is mostly sunny with mid 70's during the day and mid 40's at night making for great sleeping. More photos posted in previous entries/visits. Monday morning we leave early for Canyonville, OR as we head to the Oregon coast. More later....

Oct 28, 2014 - Water runs South

Had a great couple of days in Susanville. We are really enjoying this trip...different route, slower pace, no deadlines. On the map Honey Lake looks like a very large lake. In reality all the lakes up here are in desperate shape. In the June Lake area, Lake Henry was completely dry. Honey Lake is a very distant grey shimmer. In the photo you can see dust blowing off the dry lake bed. We drove about 40 beautiful miles north to Eagle Lake and then drove around the shoreline. All along there are stranded docks, marinas and piers a long ways...

Oct 24, 2014 - If you can't take the steps...

...better find a ramp. Spent all of Friday working on "issues" with the motorhome. A frustrating day that ended up very well in the end. Our steps had stuck in the retracted position on our first day. This meant we had to buy a little two step ladder. Every stop meant we had to set it up, exit the motorhome, set up a ramp, get the dogs out, put the ramp away (if we were driving the car away) and then reverse the whole process on return. Workable but a hassle. We were referred to a repair shop in Carson City who looked to see if it was easy...

Sep 2, 2014 - Merrill Campground - Eagle Lake, CA

Lots of smoke from the forest fire about 50 miles N. of Weed so... Yesterday morning, Monday, we moved from the Mt. Shasta area to one of our most favorite places...Merrill Campground on Eagle Lake just North of Susanville, Ca. The CG was full over the Labor Day holiday but the camp host at Merrill, who we talked to on Sunday, said there would be a mass exodus of campers Monday...and there was. We were able to get into the site we were hoping for (satelite friendly) and will be here probably for 2 weeks. Pups get to go swimming today which...

Aug 27, 2013 - Eagle Lake, CA.

Eagle Lake, as we've mentioned before, is one of our favorites. This time we stayed a week arriving August 21 and returning to Reno on the 28th. Great time to escape the heavy smoke in Reno from the Rim Fire burning over the hill in Yosemite. We had beautiful clear blue skies with temps during the day in the mid 70's and near 40 at night...great sleeping weather. The smoke finally did arrive the day before we left for home. Did not take many pics, but Betty did find some pelicans, as we've taken many photos in the past...here are few links...

Jun 16, 2013 - Travel day - Reno to Susanville, CA

Today found is on the road again .... the trip to Susanville contained dry roads and not much winds. 2013 - Here we come

May 19, 2013 - In the Pines at Last

We had a short hop planned for today. From Carson City to Eagle Lake was just a little over 140 miles. The ride as far as Susanville was scenic along good roads and fairly easy grades, though we never went below 4400 feet elevation most of the day. However, the small county road we used to go from Susanville to Eagle Lake was a narrow goat track up and over a 6400 foot summit that stressed the Rocketeer and crew to the max. We arrived intact at Merrill Campground and were rewarded with the most spacious and well laid out Forest Service...

May 15, 2013 - Eagle Lake, CA

We wanted to start this leg in our journey to the Pacific NW with a stop at one of our most favorite places to camp...Eagle Lake. The south shore of Eagle Lake, and Merrill Campground, is approximately 16 miles north of Susanville and 105 miles north of Reno, NV. Eagle Lake is located at the juncture of four major geologic provinces. To the west and south is the Sierra Nevadas, a giant mountain range formed by tectonic uplifting along the edge of the continental plate. To the west and north are the Cascade Mountains, which run through...

Sep 28, 2012 - Susanville, California

We discovered Susanville as we traveled south from Klamath Falls toward Reno on CA-139. Located in northeastern California at an elevation of about 4,200 feet along the Susan River, Susanville’s history began in the mid-1850s as a trading post along Noble’s Emigrant Trail. The town was named for Susan Roop, daughter of an early settler. Early industries included logging and mining. Population at last census was nearly 18,000 people. The Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail is a 25-mile long rail-trail that leads from Susanville west along...
