Sep 10, 2006 - Yosemite Park

We spent a little more time in Sonoma catching up on odd jobs, email etc, and decided to call ahead to San Francisco tourism to see where we could find to stay as there didn't seem to be any campsites for the city listed in our Lonely Planet. It was a good job that we did because, as it turned out, a conference was about to start that very week and every hotel, hostel, B&B and carpark was absolutely jammed. We decided on a hasty change of itinerary (if our slap-dash approach to planning could even be called that) and set off for Yosemite,...

Aug 15, 2006 - Stockton, CA

Monday and Tuesday, July 14-15 On the way from the RV park to the coast, we stopped at the "Drive Through" tree. A giant redwood that has a tunnel cut through it so that car's can drive through it. We could not take the camper through, but we took pictures standing beside it. The road over the mountains to the coast and the coast highway were both very interesting the road to the coast was very steep with numerous curves. The coastal highway also had a number of sections with steep grades and sharp curves. Was definitely challenging with a...

May 28, 2006 - Yosemite National Park

May 28, 2006 Yosemite National Park, Wow! What a place to visit. We spent 2 days at Yosemite, driving most of the time. We planned an easy ride to the park, however, there were two rockslides blocking the route, Hwy 140. I had picked a campground just 23 miles from the park entrance. Reservations had to be made months in advance because Yosemite is the busiest park in the US. No way could we change our campground plans. The drive to the south entrance was 83 miles. It did not seem too bad until we started. It took us 3 hours to get to the...

Jan 28, 2006 - Day One - Western Loop Vacation

Ann came over last night to start her house sitting bout. She brought a roast beef dinner wither her!! This is a Keeper for sure!! Not a very exciting bit of news but as long as I have network access I may as well log today's activities. Got up about 315 this morning and packed. WE left about 4:30. We made our first stop in Wilsonville (a few miles South of Portland) for breakfast. We had high winds and rain all the way and it continued till we got to the Siskiyou mountain pass. The Oregon State Police had a notice up that chains needed to...

WES ZIG Stuff

Mar 15, 2005 - Coming home again, Wolfe be damned.

At a certain point, it became clear to me that to move the Yanui Beach Project forward, I would have to return to America where I could fundraise the most effectively. The outreach from friends and family during the first two months was significant---using only the internet we had raised a good portion of our total budget. But now it was time to collect some big checks from people/institutions who were in the position to underwrite the balance of what was needed. And so, rather uncerimoniously, on a sunny Wednesday afternoon, I packed up my...
