Dec 31, 2014 - TTN Rancho Oso near Santa Ynez

When the Trailer Barn in Paso Robles was done fixin us up and Dave double checked the work we left at about 11:30 a.m. heading south on Hwy 101. The 5'er traveled very well, straight and true. This is the first time we have stayed at this Thousand Trails preserve. It's widely known for it's scenery, hills and the wonderful views of the canyon. This preserve is a portion of a former much larger ranch. Now it's about 320 acres. It's a very tricky place to get to, as once you leave the highway it's county, back country roads until the turn...

Lake Cachuma Campout 08-01-12 Another successful campout this year, thanks to all for the hard work. Randy & Joni Monroe could only come up Saturday night because of her work. Joe & Dora Robels wee not able to make it, but hope to see them next year. Wednesday when we arrived it was already getting hot. The first thing we did was hook up the electric and get the air conditioners running. Then we took our time setting up. Boy, were we ready for a cold one! I even had a beer. We fixed hot dogs and hamburgers for dinner. This was easy and did...

Santa Ynez Elks Jamboree 2011 @ Live Oaks Campground Well we had another great campout this year. The Santa Ynez Elks always put on a great jamboree. We left on Thursday and met Jim and Paula Elkins on the way to Live Oaks. We arrived about noon, checked in, and after getting setup we had a drink and started relaxing with McDaniels & Barks, who were already there. Thursday evening was a quiet time with everyone just relaxing and taking it easy. Friday broke bright and pretty. That evening we went over to eat BBQ beef at the pavilion. It was...

Oct 14, 2010 - Rancho Oso

We had planned on going to Pismo Beach next but all of the RV parks were completely full with a waiting list. Who knew that they were going to have their Clam Festival the same week that we wanted to be there. Therefore we decided to go to Rancho Oso. Really just to get our mail and hang around until the Clam Festival is over. At Rancho Oso you have no cell phone service and therefore no mobile broadband. Their WIFI is hideous (Up, down, up, down) and you can only get it at the adult lodge. In fact, I never was able to logon to the internet...

Another successful campout this year, thanks to all for the hard work. We had two new campers that joined us: Roni & Mac Podilla and Randy & Joani Monroe. Will & Amy Howell could not be their because it was their anniversary. The weather was almost perfect, warm during the day and cool at night: setting around the fire was just right and sleeping at night was comfortable. Bill W. built great fires each night for our BBQs. I had to remind him to make sure the pit was level so the fire would burn evenly. Thursday was Tacos, Friday was CYO...

Apr 4, 2010 - Roaming Near Rancho Oso

On Easter Sunday, April 4th we began our journey up the Pacific Coast with an uneventful drive through LA and then a leisurely drive along the 101 through Santa Barbara. From there we continued north along the San Marcos Pass where we had some spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and then took a winding road through the Los Padres National Forest. Then things got tricky. The road to the Thousand Trails Ranch Oso Preserve was a white knuckle drive. It was slightly wider than one lane, lined with trees no shoulders, up and down hills,...

Aug 15, 2009 - Lake Cachuma

Another successful campout this year, thanks to all the hard work of everyone. We missed two of our regular campers, Dave and Joan Garcia and Bill and Sharon Hamblin. Dave Garcia is not doing well and we will keep him and Joan in our prayers. Joan and Sharon drove up Saturday and stayed the night. It was great to see them and they did have fun. The weather was almost perfect, warm during the day and cool at night. Setting around the fire was just right and sleeping at night was comfortable. Only problem on Thursday, it was a little overcast...

Apr 17, 2009 - Santa Ynez Elks Jamboree

Hi all, Just got back from the annul Santa Ynez Jamboree Campout at Live Oaks campground. The Santa Ynez Elks put on a great campout and all who attended had a good time. We arrived Friday around 1pm and set up with the help of Keith Barks who directed me into the perfect site. We renewed old friendships and made some new ones, and then went over to the dinning area for the pig races and BBQ. After a great BBQ, we all adjoined back to our camp for fun and stories around the fire, some stories bigger than others. Saturday dawned bright and...

Oct 10, 2008 - Wine tasting in Santa Ynez,CA

We went with our neighbors (Schemhl's) to visit some of the wineries around Santa Barbara, CA. We flew into LAX on Thursday night and drove up to a lovely resort in Santa Barbarba, The Fess Parker Doubletree Hotel, which is located right on the Pacific Ocean in downtown Santa Barbara. This meant that one could walk to see a lot of the downtown wineries or go shopping. Santa Barbara has a lovely pier at the end of the main street, with a beautiful view of the hills surrounding the city (see photo 1) . There was a nice walkway between the...

Feb 12, 2008 - Santa Ynez, CA

This campground is one of our favorites because of its location. Located about 20 miles from Santa Barbara and the unique Dutch village of Solvang, you have just about everything a short drive away; ocean, mountains, big city, little city, unique city. The only problem is Wal Mart is about 60 miles away - he he.
