Oct 27, 2016 - Day 42, Saturday, October 15

so -- I put the intersection where we were to hook up with Route 66 in San Bernardino in my GPS and surprise of all surprises, when I arrived -- I'm in front of the location of the first McDonalds. McDonalds is no longer at the site but the new owners have put in a museum to honor the site. The current owner is also a fast food restaurantor 'Jaun Pollo.' Since we were there we decided to have lunch before moving on. So -- we are officially back on the Route. The towns along the Route have really gotten into the swing of things. We pass...

Oct 18, 2016 - Santa Monica CA - Alanna & Caia at the park

Well it was a short but very enjoyable visit, prior to us catching the metro to go see our dear friend Sr. Clara we went to the local park that Alanna takes Caia to each day. Caia has many friends there, one in particular is Lilly. Caia just left us and walked hand in hand with Lilly to go play. It was so great to see what a good mother is and how she interacts with Caia in the park. We are very proud of her as well as Tom they have raised a very precious, joy filled and great daughter.

Second Half of 2016

Oct 17, 2016 - Santa Monica CA - Alanna, Tom and Caia

We decided to take the train to see Alanna, Tom and Caia in Santa Monica. We detailed our adventure to get to Santa Monica in the previous journal entry. It was great to see them again after our wonderful visit a couple weeks earlier in Oceanside. We brought Caia’s birthday present, a Salmon/Peach colored coat that we found in Carlsbad, Caia really loved it. Alanna and Caia showed us how she dances and sings. Later in the day we went to a restaurant Reggi found in Bon Appetite magazine, it was called R + D Kitchen, the reviews were...

Second Half of 2016

Sep 23, 2015 - Santa Monica + Dodgers

Today we went and had a walk around and lunch at Santa Monica Pier. Nice place, but you don't need much time there. From there we headed down town to check out the Staples Center, then headed to Dodgers Stadium for a game. We had Dodger Dogs for dinner.

We managed to...

Jun 2, 2014 - Los Angeles

On 2nd we visited Santa Monica including the local shopping areas. It was quite fascinating. We then went to Farmers Market and again had a very interesting time. The evening was spent roaming around Walk of fame area which is all the time crowded and full of life and action. Night we had dinner at Gate of India, a small Indian joint about 20 mins walk from our hotel Lowes Hollywood. Food was reasonably alright.

BHUTAN A SHORT VISIT

Sep 13, 2013 - Final leg of Route 66 at Santa Monica

Finally a slow start with a sleep in. 11am depart on the bikes for the end of the road, Route 66 ends on the Santa Monica pier, so that's where we rode and parked! Team photos with the bikes in the parking lot, in front of the sign marker and with other tourists. Then it was lunch at Bubba Gumps, which is based around the movie Forrest Gump, and is situated on the pier at the end of Forrest's run across America. Food Not so good, but can say we went once. Bikes were then returned to Eagle Rider, but not before Frank got lost one more time....

USA HD Trip 2013

Aug 17, 2013 - Santa Monica day trip

Start of Day 1 - off to Santa Monica pier. Checked out the some shops, some bars, and the pier itself. Bus cost a fortune to get there, $1 each, better than the estimated $45 taxi ride! Good fun but q long day after no sleep on the plane, we'd been going for over 36 hours no sleep at this stage.

USA HD Trip 2013

Jul 5, 2013 - Santa Monica

Today we decided to check out Santa Monica. After driving around we found a parking lot fairly close to the pier. Parking was $1 per hour but was limited to 2 hrs. Max. This seemed better than the $12 all day parking since we wouldn't be on the pier that long. This lot was just under a mile from the pier with beach stretching as far as you could see. It was a nice day to walk enjoying the sights and sounds of a crowded holiday beach. Santa Monica Pier is different from the other piers we have visited so far in that it has an amusement park...

May 14, 2013 - Santa Monica Pier

@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND Here is an excerpt from the Lonely Planet - USA chapter ‘Los Angeles’: Santa Monica is the belle by the beach, the poshest among LA’s seaside cities, hemmed in by luxe beachfront hotels and sprinkled with købe-burger restaurants and $100-T-shirt boutiques. Kids love the venerable Santa Monica Pier where diversions include a quaint carousel, a solar-powered Ferris wheel and an aquarium with touch tanks. Smoking is forbidden almost everywhere, including the beach, outdoor restaurants and the Third Street Promenade. KAPOORS...

Apr 13, 2013 - Day 8 Mojave Desert to Santa Monica California

Mojave Desert to Santa Monica 305 Miles - Total miles 2,090 While we were heading back to Route 66 from the Mojave Desert Campground we almost ran into several cows-not something you expect to see in the desert! Once back on Route 66, it was a somewhat bumpy ride with ups and downs similar to what you'd find on a roller coaster. There were several interesting attractions again and we found a nice cafe to have have our morning coffee. Once we reached the border of Los Angeles County, it took us half the day to reach the ocean. It was...

Route 66 Road Trip

Mar 17, 2013 - Sunday with Alanna & Tom

On Sunday we walked down to Main Street about 8 blocks away, to meet Tom and Alanna at one of their favorite sidewalk Cafes for Coffee (Mocha and a double Espresso) and a chocolate roll. While Alanna went back to do some studying, we walked with Tom down to the Santa Monica Pier, Reggi was there three years ago and it had been decades since Mike was there. We found out that Muscle Beach - a well known fitness beach in Venice - was originally located in Santa Monica and was where the start of the fitness movement. Our first stop the Merry...
