May 13, 2016 - Santa Maria

Finally, we’re off on our summer travels. Get out of L.A. Drive along the coastal route of Highway 101. Past Ventura, and past our old camping spot at Refugio State Park with its lovely Palm Trees. We stopped at Santa Maria Elks Lodge for a few days. We have heard about their Friday night BBQ dinners for years, so we had to see for ourselves. We bought our tickets and a member walked us through the routine. Pick out your steak, take it out to the huge BBQ grill room (has its own bar), cook it, bring it back to the dining room to get your...

Jun 13, 2015 - The Road Home!

June 11, 2015 - Thursday Okay, today we started the final journey home! 220 miles to Redding Elks Lodge. Pretty ride until we got to California, then everything is brown and dry! Fairly level easy drive as well, until we reached California! Up and down through the Klamath National Forest. We stopped at a Pilot station for our final gas purchase under $3.00 a gallon! Paid $2.92.9 with our Good Sam 3c per gallon discount. For our RV friends, we are averaging 7.2 mpg on this trip. I usually am happy to hit 7 mg, let alone 7.2! I think the last...

Canadian Tour-2015

Jun 10, 2015 - Santa Maria Elks

Spending a week in Santa Maria at the Elks. Full hookups, 50 amp, good Elks wifii and good cell signal. Spots are ok, but near a neighbor and some of the locals drove or walked through the RV spots, not bad, but a couple time. They have a nice big grass area to let Max play. The weather was awesome, cold and overcast in the morning and sunny and 73 in the afternoon. At the same time Bakersfield was 103. We went to the Elks cook your own steaks on Friday and had the chicken. The whole meal was really good. Met some nice people from the area...

Feb 19, 2015 - A week at the Santa Maria Elks Lodge

We have spent the last week here at the Elks Lodge RV Park in Santa Maria with our very good friends, Linda & Jerry. While we haven't been doing much more than enjoy the company of good friends, it has been very relaxing. I have been trying to keep up on my bike riding and one day Jerry joined me for my daily ride. Over the weekend Linda & Jerry's niece Kim and her husband arrived for the weekend in their 5th wheel. Great people and very enjoyable to visit and spend time with. Kim and Richard made a meal one evening with their version of...

Dream On

Jul 4, 2013 - July 4th Campout @ Elks Lodge

July 3rd. – Everyone started pulling in today. The park sure filled up fast. It was a quite night because tomorrow was going to be a great 4th of July party. July 4th. – The day dawned bright and warm. Paula Elkins had a water slide brought in and setup. Both the ladies and little kids enjoyed it. The lunch was potluck, as always there was more than enough food for everyone. A vote was taken to hide all scales! The rest of the day was just relaxing and fixing the problems of the world. We cooked hamburgers and hot dogs that night in keeping...

May 19, 2012 - Entering California

We hit the road to California the other day, and a long road it was… more desert, more mountains on the horizon. If the journey west to California had been a DVD, this is the point at which I probably would’ve “skipped” forward to the next scene: California. The scenery is grand, but too much of anything wears on you after a time, even cheesecake or pizza… and I was ready to put it behind us. Had we been able to do so, however, we would’ve cheated ourselves out of a humorous visit to a little place off the highway called “Alien Fresh...

Mar 19, 2012 - Bye Bye Santa Maria

Today it was time to say good bye to Aunt Lucy, Lizzy, Diana, Eddy and to Santa Maria. We had a wonderful time there and I would have like to have stayed longer and do a bit more but time flies and I still have a lot more places and people to see on my list so after lunch we packed up the car and drove off. We were heading to Ventura for a first visit with my dad and uncle John. On our way we stopped for a quick look at Gaviota beach. Eric of course had to collect more sand for his collection. when that was done we continued on our...

Mar 17, 2012 - Another day in Santa Maria

Today we decided to go to the mall. I remember when the Mall was new and the cool plce to hang out but now it was so different. I was hoping to go to the t-shirt store and get cool t-shirts for the kids but it wasn't there anymore. Actually hardly any of the old stores and shops were there anymore. It was almost like a ghost town. The kids did get some shopping done, well at least Patric and Julia did. Eric couldn't, as usual, make up his mind. Leaving the mall we were surprised by the change in the weather. It was absolutely pouring!...

Mar 16, 2012 - My home town

It feels really strange to be back in Santa Maria. I recognize names of streets and things but everything looks so different to how I remember it. I really wanted to go see my old "neighborhood and also go see my old schools so today we drove out to the trailer park I used to call home. It looked so small but pretty much how I remembered it. Then we drove to Orcutt, passing Fox 'n Woods on our way. Fox 'n Woods didn't look as fancy schmancy as I remember it. Orcutt on the other hand looked a lot more "aged". In Orcutt we went to my old...

Mar 15, 2012 - Santa Maria...Here we come

Today we left the dessert. Melissa, the kids and I drove off to visit Santa Maria. We had a great drive. We stopped to see these really cool, probably life size, dinosaurs. We were able to walk into one. We really enjoyed that. Then our trip took us through the city of LA. WOW! What traffic! but it was nice to see different things like the Hollywood sign and stuff. After a while we hit the 101 and saw the ocean. It's so beautiful. How the waves hit the shore...just beautiful! Since it was still light we decided to drive over the pass...
