Sep 11, 2012 - Santa Cruz, Ca

We got an early start and headed for Santa Cruz, California. I am not sure what to say that hasn't already been said in the past? Santa Cruz is where we played growing up, my sister lived there for a while and met her husband there. There is a fabulous boardwalk, a great pier, lots of great shops, terrific food, music and evening entertainment. Plus there is always the lighthouse and the ocean. We went to the Crows Nest for lunch. It is a great little restaurant nestled in the harbor, looking out over the rock levy and lighthouse. As you...

Feb 5, 2012 - Seacliff State Beach

We frequent the Santa Cruz area because our son went to college at UCSC and is now teaching at Cabrillo Community College. We counted six rv parks that we have stayed in in the Santa Cruz area. Our favorite is New Brighton State Beach (NBSB). We like to try new rv parks that way we will know first hand which one to stay in when we plan longer trips in that area. NBSB would not accept reservations because they are removing trees so we tried nearby Seacliff State Beach. We like the security of California State Parks and before I retired I...

May 6, 2011 - More Santa Cruz

The park is located on a cliff about 200 feet above a really scenic beach, not like ours but one with brown sand and water temp in the 50's. Susan got her exercise walking down and up the ramp and steps to the beach and I carried Mimi up the last half of the ramp. We did all of the touristy stuff for four days which included visiting the UCSC campus, two lighthouses and walking out and eating lunch on the ocean wharf. We also spent time walking around both downtown Santa Cruz and Capitola and comparing both to our Historic downtown FB. (We...

THERE WE ARE

May 2, 2011 - Over the hill to Santa Cruz

We arrived in Fresno last Monday and have being staying in a 1 BR apartment located in the Retirement Community that is the home of Susan's mother. There was a rehearsal dinner on Thursday night, the wedding (4 PM) and reception was afterwards on Friday evening. We watched the wedding in England at 1 AM and really the wedding here was just as nice, in it's own way, as the big wedding. We have had a great time - Susan renewed lot of former friendships and she spent a lot of time fussing over her 91 year old mother.(Oh how Lou can make things...

THERE WE ARE

Sep 12, 2010 - Santa Cruz California

We've been home for nearly 3 weeks now and the birthday parties and tax returns are done. We visited with family and a few friends - great to see the ones we were able to see, sorry we did not get to see you all! And now the bikes are in a box and ready to travel to Italy. We have our panniers packed, now with many fewer clothes than originally planned and we purchased a map or two and have a general idea which way we will head once we arrive in Milan. We are not sure the availability of internet access on our bike route, but we are hopeful...

Aug 19, 2010 - Planning, Stage 1

I've spent the last two evenings cross-referencing state parks in Minnesota with the geocaches within them, trying to find a fun route through the state. Of course it will all change once I get there, but I need to at least plan out the hotels and this certainly helps narrow down the options. What I know is that I want to spend some time at the International Wolf Center in Ely, and I need to make my way to Twin Cities 3 days later. This is the fun part. Once I start putting in hotel costs and throwing that into the mixture, it gets more on...

May 15, 2010 - Santa Cruz California

Ahhh, finally we found the sun! After a few cold, damp days in Carmel and Monterey, we find the sun in Felton Ca, just 6 miles from Santa Cruz. We stayed at awesone RV park called Smithwoods and it was in the middle of the Redwood forest. The tallest tree there was 280 feet! That was a huge tree, but we would see more later! The Mrs and I went down to the Santa Cruz boardwalk and pier. You should go and watch the Lost Boys now, so you can see all of the Boardwalk and pier. It was awesome, the got to see some Harbor Seals close up. We had...

Apr 13, 2010 - Santa Cruz

It is cool but sunny this morning and at the RV Park’s office we met a staff member who showed us the ‘mailbox squirrel’ who waits every morning for the staff to feed her. Above the mailbox nailed high on a redwood is a bright light activated by a solar panel. The squirrels have learned that they can warm themselves on a cold day by sitting on the solar panel which turns on the light! We drove into Felton and the largest and most crowded store in town is a church run thrift store (half price Tuesdays and Wednesdays!) After lunch we drove...

Another rainy day; between showers Bear had a last romp with Sadie and her siblings before the rally broke up. It started raining as Scott hookedup the trailer at the RV site and working on the rig in the rain is not fun. Neither is driving the rig in heavy rains but we had reservations in Felton so off we went. Our RV Park in Felton borders the Henry Cowell Redwood State Park and is thick with majestic redwoods, ferns, blue jays, skunks, squirrels and raccoons. Bear saw her first squirrel today! We took her to the Scott’s Valley dog park...

Aug 2, 2009 - CA/Central Coast

Santa Cruz Ranch RV Resort, Scotts Valley, CA This could be the ultimate euphemism. Let’s just say that this RV park bears no resemblance to a ranch or a resort. And most of the people seem to be permanent residents, so we really don’t fit in. But the location is great: just six miles from the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and easy access to Hwy 1 for a drive up the coast. Speaking of which, on our drive up Hwy 1 to Half Moon Bay, we stopped in a town called Pescadero to have lunch at Duarte’s Tavern, which Nick had seen on the Food Network’s...

May 9, 2009 - Life's a beach

We hurried across the busy road for our breakfast. We're not in the main part of the motel, which also means the wifi doesn't work in the room (dammit), so we took the laptop over to the breakfast room with us. The breakfast was actually quite good, no cerial but plenty of fruit and bagels (we're gonna look like bagels soon) and boiled eggs! Which we took full advantage of. As we'd had quite a few busy days in San Fran (don't laugh, we were busy!) we decided to have a day on the beach. It was a bit chilly on the walk down there but it was...
