Oct 6, 2017 - Flying to Boston

The trip did not start off very well. We were on the train headed to the San Francisco Airport when Rich realized that he had left his passport at home. So, I continued on to the airport with all the luggage and Rich headed home. Rich does not have a cell phone, so I had no way to communicate with him. The plane was fully boarded and the staff were about to give his seat to someone else. I was begging them to give Rich a few more minutes when he came running onto the plane, all sweaty and tired. The steward gave him a couple of alcoholic...

Oct 6, 2017 - I support the President, God bless the USA

Ahh yes, there are still many President supporters around, car stickers, people you talk to etc. and then of course you get the other supporters, who support Madonna, Hilary etc. and I might just leave it there. We had a slow start to our final day in San Francisco and the United States of America. Packed up this morning and then headed into the city where we did a self guided city walk around Union Square and South Market. But the highlight of the day for me was time spent in the Haight Ashbury area, known as the hippie world during the...

Oct 6, 2017 - Riding along on my push bike

Yes, I can say I've actually cycled across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. (Thanks for the advice, Evan and Rachel, it was a great experience). We left home early yesterday morning (we always leave early, this was just earlier than usual), caught the tram down to Fishermans Wharf, picked up a couple of clumsy, heavy hire bikes with lousy gears and headed off in beautiful sunshine with not a breath of wind to hinder us. We cycled through the Aquatic Park and all along the waterfront on a cycle path which was pretty, up and onto the...

Oct 5, 2017 - San Francisco - 40 years on

I can't believe we were here as backpackers 40 years ago! I recognise very little most certainly Fishermans Wharf and the old trams, many hills but not much else. Apart from in the downtown CBD area, I'm surprised at how run down the suburbs are, so many homeless around in really dire circumstances (very dirty as there are no communal bathrooms for them, many mental cases probably from drug use, many druggies and drunks, and of course many homeless who are just down on their luck). Having said that, I believe the government have set aside...

Oct 3, 2017 - Tired of Travel - Never ...

Whooee, another big travel day, left hotel in Boston at 5 am, flight to New York, 3 hours hanging around airport then 6 hour flight to San Francisco, however local time here is only 8.30 but Boston time is currently 11.30 pm. I think I'm tired. And yet when I'm frequently asked the question, 'Don't I ever get tired of travel or roaming the globe?', the answer has to be 'As If'! I never tire of reading articles on travel, researching destinations not yet visited and adventures still to be experienced. I want to travel everywhere, to see and...

Oct 2, 2017 - San Francisco

We arrived in San Francisco in style by crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. After checking into our 5 star hotel we decided to explore the city. Started in Union Square, then headed to Chinatown for dim sum. That was really fun, crazy Chinese women basically shoving different plates at us all at the same time! Then we headed to Lombard Street, famous for being very crooked, before walking through North Point (Little Italy) and ending up in Fisherman’s Wharf. It was fleet week so we saw a lot of the Navy and Naval ships. We got the old school...

Sep 14, 2017 - All You Need Is Love

The traffic I encountered from the California state line, up over the Sierras, and all the way home today is certainly a different scene than when I was here the first time in 1967. Yikes! So many changes in that half century. We BBB's bemoaned some of the changes in ourselves as well, but we agreed that we are still young in spirit, 50 years better, and glad to be here. As the sun sets on the Summer of Love and on my road trip, the Beatles remind us that, in spite of all the loss and discord in our world of late, the important thing is the...

Aug 30, 2017 - SFO to Auckland

August 30, 2017 Now that we have done 8 two month camping trips in our Roadtrek around the US and Canada we have rented a Mercedes Sprinter camper (Britz Ventura) in New Zealand. The rigs are both Sprinter 3500s but the Britz has the steering on the right and the layout of the camper is a bit different. The Britz comes outfitted with linens, pots/pans, utensils and dinnerware. We went through our checklists and found that we need to take things like a first aid kit, bungee cords, spices, tote bag etc. Our duffel bags are fairly...

Aug 17, 2017 - Leaving San Francisco

Early morning start and quick breakfast with the taxi waiting. Taxi to Transbay Bus Station where I collected my Rail Pass and all pre-booked tickets (8 trips altogether), and checked my suitcase for the first leg to Denver, Colorado. Caught the AMTRAK Transbay Bus across the Bay Bridge to Emeryville Station. Ended up sitting next to an African American guy named Geoff who was also travelling to view the eclipse (in Lincoln, not far from Omaha) - very interesting chat. At Emeryville Station very confusing instructions to all passengers...

Eclipse Chasing 2017

Aug 16, 2017 - Los Angeles to San Francisco

After a very basic breakfast at the hotel took the shuttle back to the airport, then found my flight had been cancelled - booked on to another flight 2 hours later. Finally arrived in San Francisco around 1pm. Caught the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transport) to Civic Square Station, where there was a massive market/entertainment event happening, then a 20 minute walk to the hotel. Fairly run-down building. My room was in a separate building up a steep flight of stairs - shared facilities but the room was quite nice. Given the flight delay, my...

Jul 13, 2017 - Missed connections but a completed checklist

So another early morning! The kids did a great job of getting up by 7:30 and getting down for breakfast. In fact, we finished ahead of time and were able to head out for our walk down to Fisherman's Wharf before our 8:15 goal. We found the City Sightseeing office and redeemed our online voucher for the tickets to Muir Woods and Sausalito. The bus was to leave to 9am and we were first on the bus; getting really good seats. Turns out the bus wasn't exactly full. Our "guide" was Russell--who introduced himself by saying that he was normally a...

Jul 12, 2017 - On & Off and In & Out

July 12 Today we needed to use the second/last day of our passes so we started off with the Hop On/Hop Off bus. We'd planned to catch the 10:15 one just a couple of blocks from the hotel but it was running late, didn't arrive until 10:45 so the day was already behind schedule. We rode it for about half an hour and then got off near the piers, intending to go to the Exploratorium (Pier 15). The stylized map the bus uses is really cute but pretty unhelpful as far as determining where you are. Turns out the bus dropped us off at Pier...
