Apr 9, 2015 - Ahead of the Snow Storm

Leaving Atascadero, CA, we headed east on US 46, a windy road through the orchards, vineyards, and horse ranches of the area and hooked up with I-5 towards San Francisco. From Fresno on, you could really see the effect of the drought on this agricultural area. Instead of green grass , everything that wasn’t irrigated was brown and dead looking. There is a lot of pasture land in that area but there is nothing for cattle to graze on this Spring. Kind of scary to see in person. We reached the Sacramento Delta area after a couple of hours and...

Jun 26, 2012 - The Gold Rush

January 24,1848, James Marshall discovered gold flakes in the streambed of the South Fork of the American River at Sutter's Mill. This was the beginning of what we now know as the "gold rush" - one of history's largest human migrations with 90,000 people coming into California! Today we visited this famous site at the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma, CA. After a very interesting and enjoyable tour there, we stopped for a yummy lunch at Cosmic Cafe in Placerville... the same place we had eaten breakfast after the...

Jun 25, 2012 - Amador Flower Farm

Yesterday we took a 20 mile trip through vineyard covered foothills to what is called the Shenandoah Valley to tour the Amador Flower Farm. The farm held a special event to showcase their approximately 1100 varieties of daylilies in their blooming prime. In addition to the 4 acres of landscaped daylily demonstration gardens, the farm had 200 unusual perennials on display. We walked through the gardens, took the informational tram ride and then enjoyed our lunch under one of the magnificent old live oak trees. Another lovely California...

Jun 22, 2012 - More Alpine Lakes

Today was another spectacular loop drive through the high country of the Sierras to view several gorgeous alpine lakes..... Union Valley, Ice House, Loon, and Stumpy Meadows. If only I could take these mountains home with me to Florida next week!!!!!! We have lost last week's heat wave (several days reaching into the 90s) and are now enjoying more "normal" weather. This morning it was 46 degrees with the high today only in the 70s. I'd like to take these crisp, cool days home to Florida too!

Jun 21, 2012 - Lake Tahoe day trip

More fun in California! Yesterday we took a fantastic trip along California's historic Highway 88 (from Gold Rush Days) through Carson Pass to Lake Tahoe. It was a full day of awe inspiring scenery of alpine lakes, meadows and majestic mountains! The return trip on Highway 50 was just as magnificent! I think the photos say it all! Tonight we are going out to dinner with Laurie, Odel, Sydney and Frank.

Jun 19, 2012 - California Here I Come!

California, here I come! These were the words I was singing last week this time! I was soon greeted at the Sacramento airport by friends Rosanna and Carol, formerly of Paws & Hooves Ranch in southeastern Arizona. They have recently moved to Placerville, CA and this is my first opportunity to visit them in this lovely part of the country. Many of you RVers know them through Laurie and Odel of Semi-True Tales of Our Life on the Road. Rosanna and Laurie are cousins. It has been a wonderful week of exploring, visiting, hiking, and eating! It...

Jul 26, 2011 - Lava Beds Monument

Tuesday: Today we had a long drive but we wanted to see the lava beds first, so we broke camp early and took a ride through the park’s Cave Loop. These caves are not tunneled into the sides of hills, but are tubes in the lava floor of the valley. They are entered through holes in the ground, and some of the more accessible ones have parking spaces and metal stairways that take you down to the cave level. They are mostly not deep, but some of them have places where you have to crawl and wear a hard hat. There are said to be some 700...

Apr 11, 2011 - Into Placerville/ Lincoln CA

4-11-11 Into Placerville/ Lincoln, CA Was up at the usual 6AM or so, but was in no big hurry to get moving as I only had 150 miles or so to cover today. I went to a local Starbucks for coffee and to get my business done online. I locate the Wal Marts near the places I plan to stop and call them asking permission to spend the night in their parking lots. In the case of this part of California (in the Sacramento area), it seems that local ordinances frown on the practice of overnight parking. I located a KOA campground in Placerville, CA...

Jun 24, 2010 - Back in CA

We arrived back in Sacramento late on the evening of the 22nd. We're happy to be home! We hope the rest of "gli Americani" had a great time in Rome. Thanks for all the well wishes for Niles' health. We have an appointment with our PCP on Tuesday and he is feeling better by the day. I wanted to include one more picture of the Italian Riveriera. Niles, Betty and I had a picnic on a long pier south of Marina di Massa on Sunday while some of the group visited Florence and Drew, Jeanne and the boys were in Rome in preparation for their...

Jun 20, 2010 - Marina di Massa

Monday, June 14 - Arrived in Marina di Massa via the Pisa Airport where we met the rest of the arriving party. They picked up their vehicles and we caravanned to Marina di Massa. The jet lagged party rested while we found a wonderful pannini shop at Piazza Betti. Tuesday, June 15 - Kerman and I drove Niles to Pisa to the US Army base there. We got him to the clinic where the doc there gave him some medications and a letter for us to give to airlines to get back sooner than anticipated. We will get him checked out when we return. The rest of...

Jun 13, 2010 - Sirmione, Verona and Firenze

Sirmione on Lake Garda was a really neat place to visit. The city was surrounded by a large castel and walls with quaint shops located within the castle walls. Verona was an experience! Niles didn't feel well so we took him to an Italian emergency room. The care was top-notch. He is somewhat better now, but we will need to follow up in the US upon return. We are in Florence tonight. We walked to most of the famous sights and were fortunate enough to have made reservations to see David (all 14 feet of him in the hard, cold, marbled, buff)....
