Apr 27, 2017 - Las Vegas to Palm Springs

Big adventure today...our first day driving in the US. I'd booked the car for 8:00am so we packed our bags, checked out of the Casino Royale and taxied to the airport, a reasonably short trip from the city. Las Vegas is much quieter at 8:00am and during the day and night. We found our way to the Alamo car hire area and chose our car before proceeding to check out. We are driving a bright blue Hyundai...easier to find in the parking lot. A bit scary...will we remember to drive on the correct side of the road? Will we look the correct way to...

Feb 28, 2017 - Hot, Sunny California (the cool, wet version)

February 28, 2017 Hot, Sunny California (the cool, wet version) It was a cool, clear day last Friday, a perfect day to be in Joshua Tree National Park. I entered from the south and after driving about 8 miles and gaining some elevation I began seeing the beautiful trees, which are actually overachieving yuccas. I was on the hunt for some blooms but they were few and far between as they are just starting. I was disappointed until I spotted an unmarked trail in a picnic area and decided to take a walk. Pay dirt! I even found one tree with two...

Jan 15, 2017 - Chen's visiting us in Palm Springs

Francis and Kathryn Chen were in Southern California visiting Francis' sister and BIL. What a thrill they extended their stay a day to drive out to see us in Palm Springs. Had a great Mexican lunch, a little football, and visit before they returned to LA.

Sep 28, 2016 - 10 Years, A Park, A Sea

Sept. 27th. was our 10th anniversary. We originally planned on dining out, but after a full day of sight seeing & CW taking a tumble on a rock banging up his legs we ate in. We celebrated with a Moscow Mule in our newly acquired Mule cups while watching our DVD of our wedding. This is a once a decade event. The sight seeing we did today was the Shield Date farm which has been in the same location since 1924. We toured the gardens & watched the Sex Life of a Date Film. Now I know why they say the date is the most costly fruit to produce....

Sep 26, 2016 - Moistureless... OK How about Desert

We started the driving day at 9:30 a.m. & it was 88 degrees. By the time we made the Ventura Freeway pass through the hills it was 10:05 a.m. and 99 degrees. It's 10:30 we are getting close to LA now & the 5 lanes of traffic heading south is all stop & go. Finally we get by the accident that had one car left on the road & it was a pretty severe rear ender. We get back up to speed & then 10:47 another rear ender. We are now coming up to a sign that says left lanes to LA & right lanes to Indo & all other desert cities. No kidding, all other...

Feb 16, 2016 - Modernism Week

As RV aficionados, we watch some TV shows that highlight how to buy an RV or how they are built. One that is somewhat unique features a couple who buy old trailers and refurbish them, adding modern features (like toilets) that people feel they need these days, but making them look authentic with the rest of the rig. They specialize in trailers built when we were children and furnish and decorate them in a ’50’s style that we do not remember with fondness. But it is clear that they appeal to a niche market that is happy to spend $60,000 for...

Jan 8, 2016 - Canyons, Wind Turbines, and Celebrity Houses

Today was a typical Palm Springs day. Sunny with delightful temps ( until the sun goes down). Was actually able to sit on the balcony and drink my coffee before heading out for my very long but VERY interesting tour. I was on the tour with a couple from Seattle and we all agreed that Pam, our guide, was the best. She knew everything about the canyons - the trees, plants, and history of the Agua Caliente Indians whose canyons we roamed today. We only went to two of the three canyons. First was Andreas Canyon that was loaded with 150 species...

Jan 5, 2016 - Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

Spent yesterday in Palm Springs. The downtown is cute but nothing special - had different expectations I guess. The tram, however, did not disappoint. The 10 minute 2 1/2 mile ride is spectacular. According to info provided, we began the journey at 2,643 feet and ended up at 8,516. The weather forecast is for rain for Tuesday, Wednesday and half of Thursday so even though I knew visibility wouldn't be great I decided to take the tram ride anyway. Weather did not permit me to explore any of the 54 mile trail system. Many kids lugged their...

Nov 30, 2015 - Palm Springs - November

It was a challenge knowing what to pack. We brought our printer, our Keurig coffee maker, Christmas tree and decorations, clothes for all seasons, etc. We spent the first few hours learning about our new place - where everything is and what we don't have! We had to call the landlord the second day - the garburetor plugged and there were a few things we wanted to know - he drove the 2 hours from Huntington Beach where they live to help us out. The place is actually nicer than we remembered from the one and only time we saw it and the hot tub...

Oct 21, 2015 - Day 3....Pick up the RV

Taxi to Carson today to pick up the RV, looks small compared to the others in the yard, but not to drive!!! Ours is 19 feet, which is about the same as our Caravan, but higher and wider... I've named the Retriever in the door window Carson....he's guarding our RV for the next 23 days. It took several hours to fill in paperwork, watch the video and go through the instructions of what to do. During this time, some other lovely tourist's paid forward, by giving us some Fire Wood, Detergent etc, an Axe (!), Washing Line etc etc a fair amount...

Apr 7, 2015 - What a start for my summer travels

Last Friday I made a trip up to Joshua Tree National Park. It was very interesting to read how important these trees are to the wildlife in the area. You would have enjoyed my pictures. There was an area also of the Cholla Cactus which they say got rain at the exact time they needed it. They were especially colorful and blooming. You would have enjoyed my pictures. I drove down thru the Belle Campground. It was in around some very big rocks and was mainly for tent camping. You would have enjoyed my pictures. I really did take some really...

Mar 31, 2015 - Made it to California

I left for CA at 9:30 Tuesday morning. Not a day I want to remember. My motorcycle carrier did not work and I pulled it about an eighth of a mile on its side. I was in a construction zone and could not get off the road. No pictures as I do not want to remember this. I called a friend at the campground and he came down to help me get it up. Before I got it back to the camp ground that I just left it went down about 5 more times. There is about 500 to a 1,000 dollars of damage. I left it at the campground - stored at one of my friends Park...
