Mar 29, 2014 - Waiting it Out

We had planned to leave Oasis Palms RV Park on Monday but we may stay until Wednesday due to some wind predicted on Monday and Tuesday. Most of the time we do not really have to be anywhere at a given time but we do have to be at Abiquiu Lake before April 11 so we can start a two day training program on that Friday and Monday. My plan right now is arrive on the 8th so we can get settled in for our 6 month stay. - This afternoon we plan to make our last trip to Borrego Springs for the season. During a normal season with some winter rains...

Mar 25, 2014 - Our Jeep and Our Future

One of my jobs last week was to replace our kitchen and bathroom faucet that we ordered from the Doubletree Factory ( now call DRV ). The bathroom one was sort of a easy replacement except for not having one of the lines tight enough when I turned the water on. It's a good thing I had Judy watching it as she yelled at me to turn the water off. After drying up the water mess I got things tightened up properly and started on the kitchen. Now that one would prove to be even more interesting than the spraying water. I have had to replace it...

Mar 16, 2014 - 8 Ball and a Fire

Last night was the first night I signed up for the Saturday Night 8 Ball Tournament and I should have just through my $10 into the breeze that was feeding the fire about 3 miles north of us blazing on both sides of Highway 86. - First about 8 Ball.....I was up first playing against Ann, the park manager, and it was near the end of our game and I thought that I only had the 8 Ball left on the table. I made a fantastic shot and played the corner pocket and sank the 8 Ball only to find out that I still had 2 balls left on the table. The only 2...

Mar 14, 2014 - Painted Canyon with 19 Photos

Our trip yesterday had been in the planning stages for a week or more and it looked like it was going to be postponed to another day because of the cloud cover in the morning. As the morning progressed the cloud cover separated to let some blue sky show through and we decided that it was time to leave. It didn't take long for Judy to get her hiking poles and her boots ready and pack up a few snacks and drinks and we were on our way. - It was only a few miles from the tiny town of Mecca, about a 15 minute drive from here but we still had a...

Mar 9, 2014 - Palm Hike and The Smell of Death

Before leaving the Salton Sea State Park on the east side of the Salton Sea Judy and I wanted to hike to the San Andres Palm Oasis that was a short drive from the campground. I have no idea how many palms are in the oasis, I didn't stop and count them, but they are in the hundreds which makes for a nice hike in their shade on a hot "summer" day. It's not really summer, it's winter yet but it sure feels like summer. - Also before leaving Judy I took a stroll along the beach and I took some photo's of the "smell of death" along the shore. In...

Mar 6, 2014 - The Nose Knows

Just like I said in the title of todays entry, "The Nose Knows". - Yesterday morning Judy and I decided it was time to leave the Salton Sea State Park. We had been there way to long but the length of stay wasn't the real problem, it was the smell in the air that chased us away, we won't even mention the train noise. - During the storm we had there the other day we had waves coming into shore and it was either the bottom of the lake churning or all the millions of barnacles that washed up on shore. Whatever it was it was not pleasant to the...

Mar 2, 2014 - What a Day !!!!

Our day started early as we had a 9 AM appointment with Petsmart to have Jaxon groomed. It's a good thing we left with more than enough time to arrive for the 9 AM because shortly after we left the campground headed north on Highway 111 I noticed a lot of dust in the air. It's not all that uncommon as there are loads of dirt bikes and off road vehicles everywhere in the desert out here. But this was different, it was a car off the side of the road turned upside down. - I pulled off the highway and ran to the car while Judy was calling 911....

Mar 1, 2014 - Bombay Beach

Before I get into telling you all about Bombay Beach today I want to talk about yesterday. - Since arriving in California the beginning of November we have had little rain but yesterday the rain came and with it the wind, and I mean WIND. We had to retract our two slide outs on the windy side of the trailer. We have been in much worse but it makes for a miserable day. What made matters worse is that the wind blew over our satellite dish for our Directv and bent the dish. I called Directv last night and they are sending someone out on Monday...

Feb 28, 2014 - Salvation Mountain

Today's entry is on Salvation Mountain. - Three decades ago Leonard Knight started his work on Salvation Mountain after an attempt failed in sewing together a hot air balloon to proclaim his Love of God. - Leonard recently made his trip to Heaven on Feb 10 of this year at the age of 82 years old. He was born in 1931, served in the military and lived in several places before settling in the town of Niland in Southern California near the Salton Sea. - Leonard's mountain stands 50 feet tall and is 150 feet wide, made of straw and adobe over...

Feb 26, 2014 - Our Trip South on Hwy 111

We finally decided to get out and do some of the sightseeing that we have on our "To Do List" and I'm only going to touch base on the highlights in todays entry. Over the next several days I plan to do a separate entry on each of the sights as we traveled out of the State Park and south on California Highway 111. - Right out of the Park and across the road down several miles of dirt road is Dos Palmas Oasis Preserve. An oasis in the desert in the middle of no where along with a historic adobe house and many ponds of fresh water coming from...

Feb 23, 2014 - Beautiful Sunset

We had a beautiful sunset last night, one that we have been waiting for since we got here. They said we would have some terrific sunsets and now I believe them. - In the sunset photo you can see what almost looks like a tornado but it's not one. Hopefully we will enjoy more of these sunsets during our stay here. - In another photo today is one of the many, many trains that run both day and night not far from the campground. It wouldn't be too bad if it didn't blow it's blasting whistle at the crossing across from us. - And finally is a...

Feb 21, 2014 - Another Day at The Salton Sea

We haven't been doing any sightseeing yet, only enjoying the environment around us. We enjoy all the birds around us and it's just fun to kick back and relax. - Attached are some photo's of Varner Harbor here and the beginning stages of clearing the boat ramp of debris. The plan is to dredge the harbor in the near future so they can have more of boat races like they have had in the past. I tried to attach a you tube of the Salton Sea Boat Races but was unable. Please google it and see how and why world speed boat records are set here. - In...
