Jan 15, 2005 - Leaving home
Someone asked why I wanted to travel alone for a year or so around the United States. "To see the country, write about it, and, perhaps, learn something about myself in the process," I responded. To plan the itinerary, I marked national parks, historic sites, museums and other noteworthy places on a map. Being outside is important, so I will go south for the winter and head north as spring and summer approach, trying to avoid fast food, malls, and heavily populated areas, while seeing some spectacular beauty and one-of-a-kind down home...Jump to full entry
Nov 8, 2004 - pebble beach coastal drive
Today we took Paul on a scenic trip down the coast road all the way to Big Sur. The views are stunning with cliffs, bays, mountains, and sea birds. The road cuts though the cliff in places, spans ravines on bridges, and stops off at Monterey. Here we took the 17 mile drive through Pebble Beach, an upmarket area where the residents ,for the price of $8.50 allow the hoi poloi to share their magnificent views, gaup at their mansions , and even eat and drink at their exclusive golf club. We had a cup of tea,and were rewarded by the sight of a...Jump to full entry
Oct 5, 2004 - Santa Cruz to Monterey
We made the 1/2 day trip accross Monterey Bay from Santa Cruz to Monterey on 10/5. It was somewhat overcast but our visibility was good. We couldn't see Monterey until we were about 8 miles away, and it was mostly hidden by fog. The approach via water is supposed to be very beautiful, but unfortunately, we didn't really see it; maybe when we leave. We decided to get a slip in a marina, because we have a long list of things to do (showers, laundry, major stock up on groceries, internet, propane, diesel, plus see the place!). We timed our...Jump to full entry
Sep 5, 2004 - The big drive through Big Sur - What a view!
Hi again! If you haven't seen all the photos then go back over the last few entries and check them out! We've finally managed to upload the pics in a photocopying shop in Monterey, near Santa Cruz. This entry is all about the drive from Santa Barbara through Big Sur to Monterey. We left Santa Barbara at about 9.30am - we had a great time there and highly recommend it. The weather on the drive up never went below 32C! We stopped off at Hearst Castle, which is about 100 miles south of Monterey. There we got lunch and checked the castle out -...Jump to full entry
Sep 5, 2004 - Monterey - We've just arrived!
We've just arrived in Monterey and are booked into HI (Hostelling International) here. It's very strict with no alcohol and it has a curfew - but the atmosphere is nice. Tonight we are going to check the sea front and see what's going on here - we'll also get you some photos! Watch this space! Tomorrow we are going to Santa Cruz... If we like it we'll stay the night, but if it's no good we're going to move on to San Francisco (about 100 miles north). Thanks for all the messages of support guys! Keep them coming! We love to hear from...Jump to full entry
Apr 16, 2004 - And the Race is ON!!!
Greetings, The trip has started; we all met in the lobby of the LA Airport Hilton and checked in. For our practice scavenger hunt, we went to the Getty Museum. In one hour, we had to do the following: 1. Locate the prickly garden. How many species can you name? 2. They say that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. Find the statue and explain the two gods. 3. Obtain a photo of one team member in the center of the labyrinth. 4. Where does the zigzag path take you? Why does it make noise? 5. Do at least two of the following: a....Jump to full entry
