Sep 2, 2016 - Highway 1

It was cool when we woke up and wearing a jumper in the morning is now the order of the day. A big change from Nevada. From our overnight stop at Fish Pond near Yosemite, we drove a few miles down the road for breakfast of fresh-baked a croissant and cappuccino at the local doughnut house and then to refuel. $50 buys us 16 gallons of top grade petrol. An improvement over the UK. Our route took us south again then southwest through the agricultural area of California past rows and rows of almond trees. We hit the ocean coast at Paso Robles...

Mar 24, 2016 - A Perfect Monterey Day

We have enjoyed perfect spring weather here in Greenfield. During the day, it gets up to around 75 degrees and at night, it dips down into the 40's - perfect for sleeping. -- Yesterday, we drove 30 miles into Salinas where there is a WalMart for shopping. The other little towns along the way I guess are not big enough to support one. We stopped for lunch at a Black Bear Diner where we had excellent food. John had a cheeseburger salad which he said was the best salad ever and I had a club sandwich with real turkey. -- Then, today, we drove...

Pretty Damn Nice!

Jan 14, 2016 - Wrapping up from home

I feel as though we needed to wrap things up. Our last 2 days were spent in Ho Chi Mihn, wandering around town, getting massages, and eating Western food. We pretty much gave up on Vietnamese food and wanted to slowly accustom ourselves back to "our" food. We did make it home safe and sound, though we had quite the day of travel which started at midnight on the 11th. We "slept" about 1.5 hours, headed to the airport, went through all the clearances and waited for our first 5 hour flight to Beijing. Upon arrival to Beijing, we were extremely...

Aug 16, 2015 - Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

Today was a busy day filled with a multitude of events, starting with a party at the 'Bentley House' on 17 Mile drive. Here they had a wide selection of their cars to view, along with some of their designers from the UK (with whom I shared a number of stories about or friend Joe who is an engineer with Bentley). While there Ash bumped into Arnie (yes, the former Governator), and we were given a sneak preview of the new SUV, the Bentaga. I would like to tell you what it was like, but we had to sign Non-Disclosure documents before we could...

Aug 15, 2015 - Laguna Seca historic racing

Saturday was spent at Laguna Seca during the day, and the Gooding auction in the evening. We arrived at the circuit and managed to find ourselves on the red carpet in front of the event sign, so time for a photo! The best place to watch cars at Laguna Seca is the famous Corkscrew, and seeing historic F1 cars sweeping through there is a sight to behold! After a full day watching the historic racing we walked back to the car and had to grab a selfie at the new 'Hollywood' style Corkscrew sign I know this is a Ferrari trip, but two of...

Aug 14, 2015 - Monterey

Today started by heading over to Legends of the Autobahn to have a look at the display of German cars. I then made Graham's day by getting him to drive the 550 to the Portola Hotel where RM were running their auction to have a look at the cars. I think this look says it all! The afternoon was supposed to be Whale watching, but the wind was too strong, so we headed back to our hotel via Safeway, and had an alcoholic picnic while the kids played in the pool

Aug 13, 2015 - Laguna Seca

Thursday morning we headed over to Laguna Seca early, as one of my favourite things from last year was standing in the paddock, as the morning mist burned off, listening to the sound of race engines being warmed up. Fantastic! We managed to get parked in the infield of the circuit which was handy! We then headed over to Turn 4 to watch the F1 cars run their practice session. The accessibility of the cars in the paddock never ceases to amaze me. Here we had a Ferrari 250GTO and Maserati Birdcage sat in the open for everyone to look at. A...

Aug 12, 2015 - Auction previews and McCalls

Today was a big day, trying to see as much as possible at the previews before the actual auctions later in the week. Being in California, it was a little ironic and amusing to find the 550 had been moved since we last saw her, and was now parked in an EV only charging space, next to a Tesla and a Lamborghini. We started out at the RM Sothebys auction, and what did we park next to in the hotel multistorey? A very rare classic Alfa! We then headed over to the Inn at Spanish Bay, where in the carpark we found the Holy Trinity of current...

Aug 11, 2015 - Will Call day

Our first order of business was to go to the different 'Will Calls' to collect the various tickets we had ordered for the different events over the week. We started at the McCalls Jet Center picking up tickets for the Wednesday night McCalls Motorsport party. Then it was a short drive to pick up tickets to the main event of the week - the Concours d`Elegance on Sunday We then headed back to the hotel where we bumped into our friend from Calgary, Glenn, who was shipping his Ferrari F50 down to the event. As it happened, the truck was...

Aug 10, 2015 - Monterey

As we had a long drive ahead of us, we set the alarm for 7am, so that we could get out of the hotel before the rush started. This worked, and we had the 550 packed and rolling by 8:30. It turned into a long day (not helped by me getting back on the freeway heading in the wrong direction after a fuel stop which added 40km to the drive)... When we arrived at the hotel we had driven 853km in ten and a half hours, and were glad to drop the car with the valet and go to the bar for a well deserved cold beer!
