Aug 14, 2015 - Monterey

Today started by heading over to Legends of the Autobahn to have a look at the display of German cars. I then made Graham's day by getting him to drive the 550 to the Portola Hotel where RM were running their auction to have a look at the cars. I think this look says it all! The afternoon was supposed to be Whale watching, but the wind was too strong, so we headed back to our hotel via Safeway, and had an alcoholic picnic while the kids played in the pool

Aug 13, 2015 - Laguna Seca

Thursday morning we headed over to Laguna Seca early, as one of my favourite things from last year was standing in the paddock, as the morning mist burned off, listening to the sound of race engines being warmed up. Fantastic! We managed to get parked in the infield of the circuit which was handy! We then headed over to Turn 4 to watch the F1 cars run their practice session. The accessibility of the cars in the paddock never ceases to amaze me. Here we had a Ferrari 250GTO and Maserati Birdcage sat in the open for everyone to look at. A...

Aug 12, 2015 - Auction previews and McCalls

Today was a big day, trying to see as much as possible at the previews before the actual auctions later in the week. Being in California, it was a little ironic and amusing to find the 550 had been moved since we last saw her, and was now parked in an EV only charging space, next to a Tesla and a Lamborghini. We started out at the RM Sothebys auction, and what did we park next to in the hotel multistorey? A very rare classic Alfa! We then headed over to the Inn at Spanish Bay, where in the carpark we found the Holy Trinity of current...

Aug 11, 2015 - Will Call day

Our first order of business was to go to the different 'Will Calls' to collect the various tickets we had ordered for the different events over the week. We started at the McCalls Jet Center picking up tickets for the Wednesday night McCalls Motorsport party. Then it was a short drive to pick up tickets to the main event of the week - the Concours d`Elegance on Sunday We then headed back to the hotel where we bumped into our friend from Calgary, Glenn, who was shipping his Ferrari F50 down to the event. As it happened, the truck was...

Aug 10, 2015 - Monterey

As we had a long drive ahead of us, we set the alarm for 7am, so that we could get out of the hotel before the rush started. This worked, and we had the 550 packed and rolling by 8:30. It turned into a long day (not helped by me getting back on the freeway heading in the wrong direction after a fuel stop which added 40km to the drive)... When we arrived at the hotel we had driven 853km in ten and a half hours, and were glad to drop the car with the valet and go to the bar for a well deserved cold beer!

Apr 9, 2015 - Up The Big Sur

Pismo Beach... what a great tourist place to go and relax. Lots of hotel/motel/suites on the beach... and oh what a beach - long and wide. The whole place - very small townish... Looking at the weather, and since we didn't feel like packing up and travelling in the rain, we stayed a second day and I'm glad we did. Lots of heavy rain would not have made the drive a very nice one. The next morning was bright and sunny... off we headed up California State highway 1, Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) or Cabrillo Highway as it's also referred to......

Aug 26, 2014 - Trip Rpt No. 15 Monterey Redux OMG

TRIP Report No. 15 – Monterey Redux and Points South (OMG) Tessa boarded a 6:30 am flight from San Francisco to Columbus on Sunday, 10 August. I went back to the hotel to sleep after dropping her off at SFO. Later, I headed back to Monterey. I wanted to explore a little more and I had some paperwork to do – it never stops. The weather upon my return was still wretched. But, Monday was beautiful with blue skies and a nice breeze – if a tad cool. I tried biking again down the peninsula. Although the ride was bittersweet without Tessa’s...

Jul 25, 2014 - Santa Cruz to Monterey

We continued our journey south on Highway 1, passing fields of strawberries and artichokes. I saw a sign that read 7 avocados $1! We didn’t stop! The lady at the harbour had recommended that we drive to the aquarium in Monterey and follow the road around to Pebble Beach – this we did at a small fee of $10, but the views were amazing and Steve got to see the famous Pebble Beach Links Golf Course! This is the course Jack Nicklaus said would be the one he'd choose if he only had one more round of golf before he died.
