May 14, 2017 - Greeks , beef, and more mules

Today was Mother's Day - another relaxed start plus another of T's great breakfasts! More adjustment of belts! Today we were having a big family BBQ so T showed J the ropes. A large chunk of beef ( perhaps 200x100x450) coated with garlic, parsley, salt, pepper, oregano, and of course olive oil - this was prepared last night and left to dry in the fridge. The BBQ device was a 200 l drum with a mesh rack covered in charcoal. Across the top 2 Reno bars with suspended hooks, topped with a lid, T fitted a thermometer to the side. The charcoal...

May 13, 2017 - Great Souvlakia

Up early for another T special egg breakfast. Then cleaning up, stripping sheets of beds and loading the coolers. V called out and we sneaked out to the deck - 3 deer had appeared - one ran off but the others stayed and T came out and tossed pieces of carrot to them; they enjoyed them. Time to head out so we loaded up and headed back through the foothills. J wanted to stop at an old style Motel we had seen on the way out. T obliged and we pulled up outside - old and scruffy with lots of pickup trucks outside. Next door was a gentlemen's...

East Coast Bound!

Jul 12, 2016 - Home to Modesto Elks

To the new readers of WhereIsTheAire--We are touring in our 2014 Newmar Mountain Aire--hence the name WhereIsThe Aire. While driving the Aire I always have a camera in my lap. Many times I will take pictures as I drive along. Sometimes I know what it/they are, sometimes I don't. The caption of a photo may say OTFW--that stands for Out The Front Window. OTSW, out the side window, etc. When you read ORI in the text, that means Outdoor Resort Indio, a beautiful RV resort in the California desert, where we live in the Aire from October to May...

East Coast Bound!

Jun 1, 2012 - Dancing Raisins - Modesto

We traveled on Hwy 99 thru the produce capital of California. Along the highway there were signs for Bravo Farms advertising their wine tasting, cheese factory, petting zoo, gift shop, collectibles, kettle corn, fuel, fruit stand and American Home Town & South of the Border café. Each sign indicated that you were getting closer saying U need 2 stop, gotta stop, just stop and (finally) “please please stop”. We didn’t stop. We were headed for the old Pea Soup Andersen's Restaurant which is now called the Spike & Rail restaurant, but they...

Apr 23, 2012 - Modesto - here we come

We pulled out of Pinnacles about 9 but Mike and Sally weren’t ready so we didn’t travel with them. Somewhere – maybe before we got out of the park, I took a dipsy doodle curve a little too fast and upset one chair and moved the couch six inches but no damage. The drive to here was through a lot of farm land – small farms and orchards. They grow a lot of nuts and fruit and veggies around this area. I knew about all the dairies but was surprised by the cheese factory in Hilmar that I would like to visit before we leave Modesto. The Elks...

2012 Explorations

Oct 15, 2011 - South San Francisco to Modesto

Crossed the Golden Gate Bridge northwards to revisit the Marian Headland scenic road. It was a one way road around the headland finishing back in Sausalito. Great views of the bay until the cloud rolled in but still a nice drive. Filled up with fuel at Sausalito and checked out an antiques market in a car park behind the service station. Quite liked a US navy ship bell but at 10kg and $400.00 it was too steep in more ways than one. Might have to think more seriously about a sea container to get some stuff. We continued north up to San...

Oct 12, 2011 - BBQ and Catfish

Thank goodness it was the middle of the night when we drove into Cumming, Georgia to pick up our chicken. The Qualcomm directions were confusing as 3 people had typed in different directions. That was NOT a good sign. We tried all three and none of them were right! We were going in circles thru the one way streets of the town……Finally, we saw a Tyson truck and we followed him to the security guard shack. Whew!!!! After we pick up a load, we determine the speed of dispatch, or what we call the comfort level. This load was 2392 miles and we...

May 18, 2011 - Week 36 (5/11-5/17):

Week 36 (5/11-5/17): Now, we don't watch a lot of TV, you understand. And when we do, we generally try to choose programs of high quality, and sports. But we have found ourselves glued to this season of Survivor. We are drawn to the physical and mental challenge of it all, but could do without the social politics. So, when we had to flee the rising flood waters of Horse Creek we found ourselves staying at another Wal-Mart just for the TV reception. There were celebratory fives and back slaps all around when the channel search was complete,...

Jul 14, 2010 - Family Reunion

Stayed three nights in a park setting at my cousin Eletha's place in Waterford...The "Cole Ranch" Tuolumne River Resort. Enjoyed an Abalone Dinner with old friends Dennis and Sheila Winchester at Eletha and Dallas's home on Fri. evening and then on Sat. we had our annual family reunion down by the river where the cool breeze of the river helped cool down the scorching heat of the valley. It was good to see everyone again.

Dec 31, 2008 - Happy New Year from Modesto

The short version: Great day of driving started with a visit to the Sundial Bridge in Redding which is an architectural wonder ... then enjoyed samples of olives at the Olive Pit and bought our favourites ... checked in at the Springhill Suites by Marriott to a king suite ... lovely italian dinner at Vito's Ristorante ... feeling spoiled on New Year's Eve ... The longer version: Today is our “easy” day as we want to explore the alternate routes and do some sightseeing. We’re lazy getting up and are on the road at 10am. Ten minutes away is...
