Aug 8, 2004 - Los Angeles

Can't believe we are at the airport waiting to fly to Hawaii. Both a bit jaded after 2 flights from Costa Rica. Quick stop over night in LA where we managed to blow our budget on Sushi and then grub from the supermarket as we were starving. See what happens when we get back to civilisation. So Aloha for now....

Jul 19, 2004 - California - Los Angeles, Universal Studios

Jul 15, 2004 - The Longest Day - part 2: California - Los Angeles, USA

Aankomst in de ochtend van de avond waarop wij uit New Zealand vertrokken! Wie zei daar dat je een dag niet over kon doen? Wij kunnen dat dus wel! Back to the future. Nog voor we die ride in Universal Studios konden maken. Ook deze vlucht van 12 uur slapen de kinderen en Marianne nauwelijks, gewoontegetrouw pak ik ruim 5 uur slaap mee. 'T is niet eerlijk. We komen aan in Long Beach. Een van de vele steden, deelgemeenten zo u wenst, van L.A. Het internationale vliegveld en de grootste haven van Amerika liggen hier. LA heeft zelf 3,5 miljoen...

Jun 28, 2004 - Lonely Road

Oh, L.A. We drove five and a half hours south to Eagle Rock, CA, for the Occidental Invitational on Sunday the 27th. The Comfort Inn is a familiar 10 minute jog from the track(I ran 3:41.96 here three weeks ago), and it's across the street from a baptist church, a money lending institution("Money-Stretching Strategies Available") and a donut shop, all in a row and locked down. I do my pre-race routine: jog twenty minutes and stretch, then two or three 200m strides, as many as it took to loosen up. I'm tired and tight from the drive; I have...

Lost in Europe

Jun 5, 2004 - Leaving Los Angeles

So the day has finally arrived. Where did the time go? It seems like yesterday that I was worrying about group presentations, writing rediculous papers, and cramming for finals. And now that it's all over I can finally relax. But relaxation is the last thing on my mind because in about 15 hours I am going to board a plane to Europe. It's both exciting and scary at the same time. For one thing I don't like flying, so being on an airplane for 11 or so hours isn't my idea of a good time. Secondly, until now the furthest I've traveled away from...

May 25, 2004 - Los Angles

L.A. Not much to tell here. LA was just a 2 day stop over. After 10 months away from home we hit our first dud of a hotel. The hotel was nice enough but the location was lousy and so we did not do much walking about and we were generally too tired from jet lag. Jet lag weakened us and we all picked up colds. Also, the main places we wanted to visit were closed the days we were there. The only thing that we will remember of LA is that after more than 4 months in Asia, the first North American hotel we stayed in was a Japanese hotel in Little...

May 19, 2004 - Leaving LA

Leaving Los Angeles: May 19th I left to London with nothing but a backpack filled with snacks, clothes, some neccessities, and my camera. I only took two pairs of black sandals, a hat, a week's worth of clothes, some books including Let's Go! Europe, and not much else. I wasn't nervous at the airport, I am not sure I fully comprehended what I was doing - that is getting on a plane to a place I had never been with only my first three nights booked. What fun. Well, here we go!!!!

Apr 17, 2004 - LA: 15 minutes of fame before a 15 hour plane

I've left the Bay Area, but not California. I'm in LA for my niece's christening, and I've already sighted a few stars. First, at Oakland airport, William Hung was behind me in line B of the Southwest cattle call to LAX. I didn't realize who he was until people started asking for his autograph. Someone took his picture and he told everybody to buy his new album. I'm sure they're selling it in the airport gift shop. The next night, I went out for Chinese food with my family and the table next to us was populated entirely by character actors....

Apr 15, 2004 - One day to go - Los Angeles

I arrived in LA early this evening on the first leg of my journey around the world. The participants of the Great Escape 2004 will be meeting for the first time tomorrow afternoon at the Hilton Airport Hotel. My last e-mail from the organizers, Bill Chalmers and Pamela Finnmark, only adds to the mystery of this trip. The e-mail reads, "Be ready to leave the hotel at 3:00 PM for an undisclosed location to meet fellow competitors in this Global Scavenger Hunt and to go over the rules and regulations and the "spirit" of the contest. This will...

Geodysseo Travelogue

Nov 14, 2003 - Departure

We discussed at length the pros and cons of joining an established RV caravan group vs. just going on our own. The decision really came down to timing; the window we had to make the trip and the itineraries offered. We made the decision to go on our own and then researched companies who rented RVs. We readily found a variety of rental choices, picked one and booked a unit from home. We had also talked to a number of people who had made the trip to both Australia and New Zealand. The almost unanimous opinion was if they had had to decide in...
