Aug 28, 2017 - Los Angeles and Long Beach

Our first few days on the big adventure! We started in LA and stayed with the loveliest of hosts Dan, Lisa, Henry and Charlie in Long Beach, and boy did they look after us! On the first day (Tuesday) we did Hollywood, seeing sights such as the Hollywood sign and the walk of fame. It was 44 degrees, so we didn't stick around too long here! We quickly headed to the beach at Santa Monica which was beautiful and full of weirdos, much more our thing. Finally it took us what felt like forever to reach Dan and Lisa, who treated us to some yummy...

Aug 15, 2017 - Australia to US

Train and bus to Melbourne airport for departure at 11.30am. Arrived at Los Angeles at 9.30am - 2 hours before I left Melbourne! Airport shuttle to hotel in El Segundo in LA. Big Latino area and fairly basic hotel. Too early to check in to wandered the streets nearby, bought a few things at a supermarket and had some lunch. Checked in and rested at the hotel (no sleep on the plane), re-organised luggage and watched TV (wall to wall Trump on CNN).

Eclipse Chasing 2017

Aug 7, 2017 - Los Angeles

So here we go with another travel journal. I have just realised that it was 10 years ago that I did the first one! This trip will mostly be in Western Canada but I am spending nearly a week in Altadena, with my very good friend Celinda. Altadena is part of Los Angeles. Celinda has a wonderful California bungalow and it is a great location to get over jet lag. An excellent recommendation for jet lag is a double margarita at Carnitas the absolute best Mexican Restaurant in the "World" I am totally not exaggerating. Yesterday Celinda and I...

Jul 27, 2017 - Pleasant evening in downtown LA

After checking in to the Omni Hotel, we walked over to the Otium Restaurant on Hope Street and had a great dinner. From there, we walked a couple of blocks to the Mark Taper Forum where we saw the play Heisenberg. Rita liked it a lot better than I did The whole thing consisted of a dialogue between two people.

Jun 13, 2017 - On To Asia

Perhaps you haven’t been following the situation in Qatar. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have accused Qatar of sponsoring terrorism, calling to mind the proverbial pot and kettle analogy. More likely, they are frustrated at the Emir of Qatar being a big supporter of the Arab Spring movement. As a king on a faction-divided and dangerous peninsula in the Middle East, a grass roots uprising is not something you are likely to endorse. So, the situation has boiled over into a blockade of the little country of Qatar. I’m told they are having to get...

May 29, 2017 - Arrived in Pula Croatia

Arrived in Pula Croatia at about 6 pm Monday May 29, 2017. Flight from Fresno to SFO was delayed and would have missed connecting flights but rerouted through LAX and upgraded to Business class. What a treat for a long flight! Short connection in FRA. Now keeping with my "cheapness" I'm waiting the two hours for the 3€ bus instead of taking the $20 taxi to town and then I'll hoof it to my room. So far climate is temporate about 70 extremely green and lush and there was more undeveloped waterfront property than I've ever seen on the flight...

May 28, 2017 - Unpacked and ready to go!

Matt spent his 25th birthday driving up here to Fresno and he and Hayley and I unloaded the truck into a storage unit. We were hot and filthy and tired afterwards but we then enjoyed a wonderful poolside evening with the Sengs chatting and drinking and eating (which is what the Sengs and I do best). Take off today to SFO to Frankfurt to Pula where I'll spend three nights. Wow! This is really happening!

May 26, 2017 - Day 1 - Start of the journey

So, the journey begins. Mahtab and Daniel came to my house, we had lunch from Mauricio's, we took some "baby bump" pictures of Mahtab, Daniel and Dalyah. Then Daniel and Mahtab drove me to LAX. Thank you both so much. I am excited. The kind that comes from not quite knowing what to expect, but hopeful. Let the adventure begin.

May 22, 2017 - San Francisco to LAX

Up early this morning, partly because I went to sleep so early and also because we are off to Los Angeles today to catch our flight home. We arrived at the Budget office a bit early and collected our car, a black Ford Focus. The plan was to have a leisurely drive down the coast road, stopping for a nice lunch and then arriving at LAX about 7:00pm. We received directions from the Budget staff on how to get to Highway 101 and off we went. The directions were spot on so we were soon on our way. We stopped in Morgan Hill along our way to buy a...

May 15, 2017 - Show me the way to st Louis, show me the way.........

Last day in Modesto today - the days have flown. Sad to leave V&T as they are the best hosts. Packed up and breakfasted by 10:30, we headed out about 11. Back through the almonds and walnuts, past the peaches, and soon onto a 5 lane freeway. As the clock ticked closer to our check in time, we still seemed far away. Next it was the San Mateo bridge across the bay ( like a Tasman bridge tacked onto a 6 lane x many km long concrete Bowen bridge) , then a short drive up to the airport. We arrived with 5 min to spare and V&T dropped us off -...

Apr 24, 2017 - Los Angeles PHOTOS TO BE ADDED

We slept until about 9:30 so we're both feeling rested. The plan for today is to buy a ticket on the hop on hop off bus and see as much of the city as we can from the top of a bus. We don't have any great desires to visit any museums or attractions, just get an overall view of the city. The routes took us through downtown LA, Hollywood, Belair and various other spots. Pete's big moment was when we went into Hooters for a late lunch/early dinner. I don't think either of us knew what to expect however the girls in their tiny shorts and with...

Apr 19, 2017 - Mildura to Los Angeles

Usually, you go to the airport, catch the plane & land where you’re supposed to but that didn’t happen today. I set the alarm for 4:30am & ordered a taxi for 5:30am. All went well – the taxi arrived right on time & I had no problem booking my bags through to Vancouver. However, while I was in the taxi I got a text message that the flight from Melbourne to LAX was delayed which was just as well because the 6:30am Mildura flight didn’t leave until 8:00am because of fog in Melbourne. By the time I got to the Qantas lounge in Melbourne, QF93,...
