Mar 30, 2017 - The Getty Museum

Oh how great it is to get a full nights' sleep! We woke at 8:30, very late for us, feeling refreshed and ready for another day. Breakfast was surprisingly good and varied with freshly made omelette and fresh waffles. Deciding to visit the Getty Museum we tossed up how to get there and chose to use buses. Google maps told us that it would take about one and a half hours. The card reader on the bus was malfunctioning so the driver simply waved everyone aboard and refused to take our cash fare. The journey down Santa Monica Boulevard passed...

Mar 29, 2017 - Los Angeles here we are

At Tullamarine we met Karen and 30 St Helena students. The purpose of their trip being to perform a production at Disneyland and then do drama workshops in New York, They were on the same flight as us. Our flight from Melbourne was long and uneventful. Neither of us managed to get much sleep and I watched four or five movies to pass the time. The painful part came after we disembarked to find that there were 8 or 9 other planes, including three from Australia that had landed at the same time. The queues to get through immigration and...

Feb 5, 2017 - ...and we're off!

Up at 3:15 am. My husband, Rip Van Winkle, who can sleep on command could not fall asleep last night. Me, the one who gets up and reads in the middle of the night and can never sleep did just fine till the alarm went off. We are at the Tampa airport drinking $4 coffee and taking bad selfies. I had my knees padded down again even after the puffer booth. I admit my knees appear to be packed with something but I am equally sure excessive knee "Fat " is not illegal. Dick has just confessed he forgot his toothbrush. Note: Not all women should...

Jan 2, 2017 - Trip to Sydney

The International Association for the Study of Youth Ministry has their bi-annual meeting in Sydney this week, so I'm going. I've never been to Australia. I found a frequent flyer mile ticket, booked the trip, and signed up to attend the conference. I'll arrive about the time the conference begins. When it is over on Friday, I'll transfer to an AirBnB room and spend a few days seeing the city. I leave on Monday night, Jan. 2, at about 10 p.m. and arrive in Sydney around noon on Wednesday, Jan. 4. Looking forward to exploring. Will try to...

Dec 10, 2016 - Nicaragua volcano

We had a lovely full day tour in San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua We toured a village and an active volcano plus the countryside Very informative trip. The full day excursion went to Grandad, the volcano national park, and to a village market. It was 100 minutes each way. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the hemisphere. They have had three dictators who have made the standard of living very poor. Poor health care, poor education, poor infrastructure. Very sad to see how different it is from the neighboring countries.

Dec 9, 2016 - Nice Day at Sea - Day of the Dead Celebration onboard

A nice day at sea on our way to Nicaragua. Each day we have a chance to go to two lectures that are very informative. One is given by a National Geographic Archeaologist for an hour on key spots in Central and South America. The other is by a very witty trip guide who has very good info on the area and general tidbits. Today we learned that 50% of the passengers were US citizens. The other half are from a combination of mostly Asian countries, Australia, and Canada, plus a few other sprinkled in. Very international group. We are getting our...

Dec 8, 2016 - Sailing to Nicaragua

We are at sea headed to Nicaragua day after tomorrow. Spent yesterday in Manzanilla Mexico. Very much summer here in mid eighty range no 80% humidity. The captain says we are headed in to a storm tonite with 40knot winds. He said to put all glass objects on the floor so they don't fall𯘀Reminds me of hurricane Matthew, Over 1,000guests on the ship are from Asia and large tour groups together. Haven't run in to free wifi yet so I'm making this brief. More pictures to come when we get to free wifi.

Dec 4, 2016 - Leaving from San Pedro Harbor

All set to go. We leave from the Port of Los Angeles located in San Pedro. We stayed at the Crown Plaza last night which is three blocks from the ship. The hotel offers a shuttle for 5 bucks each to take you over there or you could taxi it. If you cruise out of here and only had one bag, you could easily walk from this hotel to the ship. There is almost nothing to do but walk in so-so neighborhoods in this area of San Pedro - old and aging and not someplace to be alone at night. I'd recommend you stay at someplace near the airport that has...

Nov 25, 2016 - Our Trip at a Glance

Our trip is broken up in four sections - Los Angeles to Santiago, Chile then Santiago to Buenos Aires then New Year's Eve until January 7th in Buenos Aires and Uruguay, then Buenos Aires back to Santiago. We originally only planned to go LA to Rio then fly home. But getting a visa for Brazil was a nightmare and so we canceled that section and opted to explore for week while waiting for the ship to return from Rio to Buenos Aires. Once we found out how expensive airfare home was going to be, we decided to avoid the black out dates by just...

Oct 18, 2016 - Los Angeles CA - Sr. Clara

While in LA we stopped to see Sr. Clara Johnson who is 94 years young. She lost her sister, Stellita, a couple of months ago, she was 92. Both Clara and Stellita have been dear friends since 1985 when we met them while living in San Bernardino CA. We took the Metro to Metro Center, we used Uber for the first time and will use it again. We got the Uber Application for the iPhone and scheduled a pickup to take us from Metro Center to Sr. Clara’s apartment and then back to Union Station. The Uber car was there within one minute of the pickup...

Second Half of 2016

Oct 18, 2016 - Glad to be leaving on a jet plane, doubt that I’ll be back again

It was quite a drive from San Fran to LA. As per the previous post, we broke up the long drive with a night in a place in the middle of nowhere called Coalinga. On the way into LA the next day, we decided to visit the Getty Center. It seems that Ms Garmin had her wires crossed on the address. As did her cousins. It appears that anyone following their GPS was going to be led astray. We went round and around into smaller and smaller streets until we got to one that had a sign on it saying “your GPS is WRONG!” and giving another address to...

Oct 17, 2016 - Los Angeles CA - Our trip to Santa Monica

We took a trip on the trail and LA metro in order to get from Oceanside to Santa Monica. Our trip was filled with more than a little stress. When we left Oceanside we took the Metrolink to LA Union Station. We had to transfer at Laguna Hills, the first train was 35 mins late, we were going to miss our connection at 9:11 and would have to wait until 4:04 to get the next train (Metrolink is primarily a commuter train for people woking in LA and San Diego). We were trying to figure out what we were going to do, when the conductor announced...
