Dec 18, 2014 - Another full week

As we said last post, the week started with the putting contest on Sunday. Monday we were playing golf at the Municipal course and Tuesday was another hike. We continue to be awed and amazed by the varied geology, and thankful for the hiking group at the Park, that is taking us places we would never have seen. This hike was to Painted Ladders, near the Salton Sea. Painted, as the rocks vary in colour from the usual sandy, to yellows, reds, greens and dark shiny almost coal like black, with a huge variety of quartz thrown in, black & white,...

Dec 8, 2014 - Slow Week

This week has been a few games of golf (the par 3 Municipal & Ivey Ranch CC) and another hike. This hike took us into Joshua Tree National Park. It was another few hours of amazing sights, even an old mine and native artifacts and relics. Found out the Catclaw Acacia bush has Mistletoe bushes growing in it as a parasite. The birds (Phainopeplas among others) eat the berries and then the seeds stick to the Catclaw and starts to grow. Unfortunately the bushes didn't have many leaves left to hang in the RV, only the berries. As Christmas...

Nov 30, 2014 - Keeping Busy

We had a fantastic US Thanksgiving dinner, with about 75 of our closest friends! Surprising how many of the people in this park are Canadian. Friday we played Historic Shadow Mountain Golf Course. It is actually a private course, but the park has an agreement with them, good for us. As some of the pictures show, it was beautiful, well kept and flowers blooming in the gardens of all the houses around it. The fact Michelle had one of her better scores this year had nothing to do with how much she liked the course! That night we had a great...

Nov 26, 2014 - Week in Review

Lets see, it hasn't really been a week since we last posted, but we have been parked here in Palm Springs area now for a week... without rolling down the highway, things seemed to have really settled down for us. This resort is in the middle of the city so it's easy for us to ride our bikes to shop and things, and everyone has offered us rides if we need them. This week was still part of our decompression efforts and I think we now are at the same speed as all the other old farts here. I'm ready to go out and buy a golf cart just so I can...

Nov 19, 2014 - A Plan is a Plan

Everyone knows that when you wake up and start your day, you usually develop a simple plan of what your going to do... for some it's simple, wash, dress and work... Well plans apparently come in many different flavours. Some are well defined, clear and straight forward. Other plans are well... the kind that happens to us. So today we are organized to ride our bikes to HomeDepot... a simple task, bike riding was something we did hours of when we were kids... what could go wrong ? After finishing our errands in the store, we came out to the...

Nov 17, 2014 - Back To The Desert

November is our least favourite time of the year in Canmore (and Alberta in general). Luckily we have a place to escape to in La Quinta California where Pam's Dad, Christina, Cam and Michele are living for the winter. We got in a little golf, some swimming, some running and lots of good family time. The perfect escape from the beginning of winter!

Nov 17, 2014 - From the Country to the City

The morning broke with a wonderful display of sun and cloud. For the past week, we have been living out in the country as it were. We love the quiet, the openness and the very laid back style of the campground we've been at. Campfires at night, picking lemons for fresh lemonade from your own tree, wildlife all around us... but without a vehicle we were pretty much stuck since we were miles from anywhere and taking our bus on daily excursions wasn't in our plans. We knew this would be the case, but then we also knew that since, like a...

Mar 31, 2014 - Hooters By The Pool

Since we arrived in La Quinta we've been enjoying watching a great horned owl who sits in a palm tree by the swimming pool. We have been calling him Hooty the lifeguard. What we didn't know was that the lives he was guarding were Mrs. Hooty and two little hooters who were hiding in the next palm tree over. They must be at a curious age now because suddenly they appeared, peering out of their nest. They are fascinating to watch and photograph. One of the little ones definitely has inherited a good "stink eye" look from Dad!

Mar 26, 2014 - Desert Fun

Back in the summer groove! We jumped right into the summer activities and have been enjoying some golf, swimming, running and cycling. We took in a couple of days of tennis at the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament, high quality tennis and a great venue! Also lots of quality family time, socializing, fresh food, great wine and a little shopping. Unfortunately Michele had to head home to Calgary on Monday and Dale and Cam will be bachelors this weekend when Pam heads to Joshua Tree National Park for a photography workshop. After that, we'll have...

Mar 8, 2014 - One week later, 125 degrees F warmer

What a difference a week makes! Last Saturday it was -40F at Lake O'Hara and today we are basking in temps of 85F, a 125 degree F difference! After a couple of months of skiing (close to 50 days with the sticks on the feet!), it is time to put away the winter toys. We high-tailed it out of Canmore on Wednesday morning when we heard that a blizzard was on the way. A more or less uneventful drive with only one dicey situation on a pass in Montana which Dale skillfully drove out of. After an overnight stop in Butte, Montana where we celebrated...

Dec 17, 2013 - Just What We Needed

We've been in La Quinta for a couple of weeks and are almost back to normal. That flight home from Nepal was a real killer, worst jet lag we've ever had. It has taken the past 2 weeks for us to get back to normal. But we're rested up now and have enjoyed our reunion with Cam, Lloyd, Christina and Nikki. Both of us lost too much weight in the Himalayas but a few bbq's, some Palm Springs "happy hours" and a bit of serious weight training and our pants aren't hanging quite as loosely as when we arrived. Time to return to winter and get ready...

Oct 17, 2013 - La Quinta, California

Depart: Apache Junction Arrive: La Quinta Campsite: None - we get to stay in a condo with a nice big shower :) Before we left for La Quinta we moved the trailer to the KOA in Apache Junction. We had planned on taking the trailer with us to La Quinta but we have friends from Victoria staying at the KOA in Apache Junction and they suggested we just park the trailer here and then come back to Apache Junction and spend some time there before heading home. Not a hard sell as all we had to do was look at the weather at home. Off to La Quinta...
