Dec 30, 2017 - musical KIYANs - not

Today we departed southern California for home (Lily, Tom, Naomi, Bob, Roo & Jasper to Wichita; Doris & Randy to Brighton; Katie to Chicago; Phil, Kyle & Harriet to Sacramento). But we stopped by Janie & Bobby's, before we went our ways. We had crackers (those Christmas crackers, segmented cardboard tubes wrapped in brightly colored paper wherein when we pull the strings, it Pops/Cracks the cracker open. These crackers had little toot horns in them. Eight little horns had assigned numbers so the tooters were: 1- Kyle, 2-Jasper, 3-Roo, 4-...

Dec 23, 2017 - Pre-Cruise Dinner

Doris & Randy hosted a pre-cruise dinner at Mimi's Cafe in Irvine. We were able to enjoy the company of those who were not able to join us on the cruise - Stephanie, Mike, Nate, & Kenzie; Alyssa & Rob; and Brandon. Other extended family joined us too - Bill and Shirley O'hearn; Dianne Bentsen; Laurie Muniz. I believe Chris' long time best buddy, Rodney, also stopped by. Unfortunately Yasu-chan and Johnny were not able to make it. Very nice gathering; and big family photo! Thank you to Lily & Tom who outfitted all of us with the KIYAN tee...

Dec 23, 2017 - Paying respect to Mom/Dad; Mo/Debbie

Phil, Kyle, Katie & I drove down to southern CA on Friday Dec 22. We stayed at the La Quinta Irvine Spectrum. On Saturday, after spending much time at Daiso (our favorite Japanese dollar store - although most things are $1.50), some of us visited Mom/Obaasan and Dad/Ojiisan; and Mo and Debbie at the cemetery. The guys went golfing and did not make it back in time to get to the cemetery before it closed. We had to go out a back gate as they closed the front gates.

May 3, 2016 - Springing into action!

Couldn't pass up the pun... But it's true. It's spring and we are getting ready to hit the road again...and we are excited to GO! IF....we can get the car out of the shop. First it was the road check up which replaced some engine mounts and adjusted the valves. The it was the battery.....and the starter. Now it's the catalytic converter and the oxygen sensor. Very grateful it all happened here and not on the road in some remote, dreary location. And we have a wonderful mechanic who has dropped everything and is making sure we can get out of...

Oct 18, 2014 - Fall color

Greetings to our fellow travelers! Tomorrow (early) we head off for another adventure. We have about two months, some general ideas, and a great desire to GO! At this point, the general idea is to head up to Bishop on hwy 395 and then spend some time around June Lake, Convict Lake, Bridgeport and whatever else we can find of interest. Then we will work our way up to Susanville, Alturas and Bend, Oregon. At that point (whenever that is) we will then either continue north into Washington, or turn West and to the coast and work our way down to...

Apr 21, 2014 - Best Laid Plans...

Plans are made to be changed... We had originally planned to spend about a week going up to our house in Brookings, OR. Our friend, Patricia, was going to join us in Cloverdale for a few days and then caravan with us up to the house. However, that idea is postponed until our return trip in July. So we will head straight up...still being a bit leisurely, probably three days. After staying a few weeks in Brookings, we plan (there is that word again) to head out in a loop around Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. That part isn't planned yet, but...

Sep 27, 2013 - 25th day in UCI

We visited University High School which gave me a very deep impression in other ways. The teachers work from seven thirty to two thirty, which was totally different from our China’s teacher. The most surprising thing is that there are more two thousand students ,but only about ninety teachers in the school, how surprising! What an American educational system! What effectiveness they have!

We had oral presentation today, too. Everybody had good stories, Anne spoke highly of our work, we all felt very pleased because all of us were very serious about the presentation, and prepared it well though we didn’t have much time. We tried our best. In the afternoon, we had trouble in finding our classroom, it’s a little farther from the one which we had class in yesterday. We felt so tired that Safineh got a little angry with us.Maybe she was kidding. But she made some jokes , said something really funny, made us laugh and laugh,and...

Sep 25, 2013 - Debrief after the school visit

Yesterday afternoon, we went back to UCI to have a debrief about the school visit and through the talk with Safineh, i knew something more than i saw. Home Garden Academy is a public school for poor children and most of them are Mexicans, speaking Spanish. At first, i did not notice that the houses around the school were so old and small, so I was very surprised to know that in such a small house, there were maybe 2 or 3 families live together in that 2-bedroom house. But the most astonishing thing was that the free lunch at the school...

Sep 25, 2013 - Home Garden ACademy

Today, we went to Home Garden Academy for a school visit. This was the first school visit in USA,but i still could see the great differences between American schools and Chinese schools. When we got to the school gate, it was so quiet that we tended to lower our voice and footsteps. I wondered why it was so quiet in a school, because in China, the loud reading of students, the playing, the screaming and the laughing could be heard far from the school. When we went into the school, the decoration of the wall was students' work, schools'...
