Jan 29, 2011 - Rib Fest

Gene & Ann had heard of a "RIB FEST" in Holtville, California and thought it would be a fun side trip. So off we all went in their car, westbound, without a clue to how far it was. Passing along more farmland for about an hour (who would have thought there would be such farming down here in this desert area of CA & AZ?), we finally found our destination. To our surprise this little tiny, old town is known as the "Carrot Capital of the world". Well, the town was parked to the hilt, so we had to find a spot and walk a few blocks to the...

Jan 15, 2010 - Preparation Day

On our morning walk today, we almost lost our way! It had been quite windy yesterday and we were surprised to find the tracks left by ourselves on previous days were gone. Amazing how the wind can get the sand to fill them in as though nothing had been there. The rest of the day was a put ourselves back together day preparing for moving out tomorrow and heading to Quartzsite. However, we did take time out for a lemon meringue pie break.

Jan 14, 2010 - University of California Ag Research Center

We made it back to the University of California Ag Research Center. They put on quite a program. Presentation about the crop and cattle research. Such as; Different varieties of alfalfa (52) to find resistance to bugs, sugar cane to find which is good for ethanol production, and many vegetables for best yields and low water usage per acre. They are even researching some tree imported from India that produces large seeds from which oil is extracted and can be used without any further refining directly in diesel engines. During a tour of the...

Jan 12, 2010 - Happy Birthday Nancy

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NANCY Yes, Nanc reached the big 55 today. Now would you think of having to do domestic chores on your birthday? Well, when the washing has to be done and you minimize trips, yes you do. Since we are boondocking/drycamping we can’t use the motor home washing machine so it was a 30 mile trip into Yuma. We spent the day there going to a movie, finding some small items, then dinner at a Mexican restaurant. It took us awhile to fine a “sit down” one rather than the fast food drive-thru. But when we pulled into the parking lot and...

Jan 11, 2010 - Out for a drive

We went to take in tour at the California Agricultural Research Farm by El Centro. We’ll we were a day early for the tours so signed up for Thrus. Then set out looking for the “New River Wetland Project”. This was recommended to us by people at the Agricultural station. Suppose to show how irrigation runoff in recaptured, cleaned up and sent back to the canal sources. Well, we saw a bunch of dirty water apparently sitting in sediment ponds and then running off somewhere. Little bit of a disappointment. Traveling through El Centro we found...

Jan 10, 2010 - Yuma Flea Market

After church today we headed for the Yuma Flea Market. Decided to pickup some more LED lights and a sun screen/shade to add to the awning on the motor home. Not that we’re complaining, but the sun gets very warm shinning on the motor home. When we sit outside along the side it does get pretty hot. Can you imagine that, a sun screen/shade in January!!! Did a little Border Patrol work today driving down a Patrol route alongside the canal. Our efforts to locate “Illegals”. (Actually looking for rafts.) Came up with these jeans which were still...

Jan 8, 2010 - Off to Mexico

Off to Mexico today. We crossed the border at LosAlogondos. It gets pretty busy here with the seniors going across to get their medicine. We went for medicine also, but not ready to call ourselves seniors. Only one of us is collecting Social Security, and that’s not the one needing the medicine!!! That trip saves us over $350 compared to buying even from Wal-Mart. We stood in line with camp hosts Reynold and Karen waiting to get back into the US. On the way back to the camp we took a little excursion onto the sand dunes. Why, just because...

Jan 6, 2010 - Another day

On our walk today, as we were passing by the dam, saw some workers out apparently raising some gates. This afternoon finally got to work and installed the mud-flaps on the front wheelwells of the pickup. This should cut down mud splashing and rock/gravel throwing on the doors and tube steps.

Jan 5, 2010 - Easy days

Week has remained pretty uneventful. Although the nights are fairly cool, lower 50’s, the daytime is quite comfortable. Air temp in the upper 60,s lower 70’s. However, the sun is very warm, you still seek shade. Hey, even I am wearing shorts (something you don’t want to see, thus no pictures) spreading on the sun screen lotion. Sunrise and sunset are spectacular every day. We enjoy the evening camp gathering by the fire under the moon.

Jan 1, 2010 - New Years Day

Yes, that is 2010! WOW!!! We remember when 2000 rolled around and all the computer scare. How insignificant that seems now. Ten years into the world without it ending!!!! Just proves the Lord is still giving people a chance!! We have now gotten well into the routine of our morning walk which actually feels good. We have collected a number of photos of “desert tracks”. Some we can identify, others we have no idea. We put out the hummingbird feeder shortly after we got here and it didn’t take long for them to find it. We can stand/sit about...

Dec 31, 2009 - New Years Eve

New Years Eve day!!! We again made our morning walk and found several of these “cracks” along the canal road. Apparently the quake was enough to sift the sand. We are just west of the Imperial Sand Dunes which this weekend is filled with about 150,000 people practicing their hobby. We started our New Years eve this way!! Then finished the evening off with our now traditional movie marathon through mid-night and a glass of “bubbly”.

Dec 30, 2009 - EARTHQUAKE

Made our morning walk again, then settled in for an easy day. Nanc got into the daily women’s dominoes game while I started the 5 o’clock hour early and got back to some of my reading. But, what a surprise mid-afternoon. EARTHQUAKE!!! It really shook, then several aftershocks. You might have heard about it on the national news. Learned that it measured 5.9 and the epi-center was located just 35 to 40 miles south of us in Mexico.
