Nov 1, 2012 - the home stretch

For fun we're going to subtitle this page Mr. Toad's Wild Ride Home From Yosemite The photos are frequently cropped a little (sometimes a lot!) but they are otherwise unretouched. They are presented here without apology, in their full, blurry and bug besplattered glory. Madolyn took them all, and despite the problems she faced with bumps, bugs, speed and rain - some of them are pretty cool! From Gold Country to Wine Country - this is the California we love and call home.

Sep 25, 2012 - Departure

When I lived in Wisconsin and Illinois we thought Arizona and New Mexico were 'way out west'. Half a century later it still seems weird to get there by heading east. But that's the way it is when you live in California and the rest of the country is to the right of our beloved 'Left Coast'. The first state to the right of us is Arizona - a state that is in the Mountain Time Zone but refuses to take advantage of daylight saving time. They also reelected John McCain to the Senate after the rest of the country gave him a pass on the...

Jul 27, 2011 - from Red Hawk to home

Wednesday: We started the day with breakfast in Placerville, with Jim and his son Butch and daughter Brenda. I remember Butch and Brenda from when they were little tots. Today they are fine young adults. We spent another few hours visiting with Jim and Denece and the kids back at home, then said our 'goodbyes' and got back on the road for home. That road is Highway 50 at Red Hawk, but turns to Highway 80 west of Sacramento. We made it home by late afternoon, and another lovely trip goes into the history books (and this infernal journal)....

Mar 30, 2011 - Apples, Grapes and Murder

Trip journals have to start somewhere so we're starting this one at our house - which is in Sebastopol, California. Unfortunately mytripjournal thinks Sebastopol is a couple hundred miles east of here, which puts it up in the Sierras someplace. For that reason we're going to borrow nearby Graton, California and call Graton our home town - until the map gets corrected. It's really OK because we are in the Graton Fire District. Graton used to be a tough little town that had five taverns on the main street. Back in the 1970's it was...

Sep 14, 2010 - Homecoming

39 months and 65,000 miles has brought us full circle Tuesday Much as we love traveling we love our family and friends the most, and it’s good to be back in California on familiar ground again. By 11:00 AM we checked out of our beautiful campground on the Sacramento River and got on I-5 which runs right past JGW's gate. Our destination: our home in Sonoma County. On the way we stopped at a truck wash in Corning where they took off our most recent collection of bugs. Several pounds lighter we got back on 5 and never stopped again until we...

Dec 8, 2009 - A Hot to Cold Homecoming

After weeks of driving - flying home is a surreal experience - Tuesday, December 8 Our days in Parkland were a blur of activity, much of which involved finding a place to store the motorhome and then getting it ready for a few months of inactivity. We found a great place at a great price only a couple of miles from the McCright's home, and we took our baby there and said a tearful 'goodbye' on Monday, leaving her all spiffy and clean for the months ahead. Seeing our kids and grandkids was wonderful, and it makes us wish we had the ability...

2009 Spring 2 Fall

Mar 18, 2009 - Prologue

PROLOGUE - so we can share our favorite pictures with you. 15 Weeks of ‘Down Time’ seems like forever! - early March, 2009 As ‘Trip Time’ (March 23) approaches, we are eager and ready to go. It’s not that we haven’t enjoyed spending time with our family and friends - every hour of that has been wonderful! But the weeks have been filled with a frenetic activity we don’t experience in our travels, and we certainly will not miss that. Medical Stuff: Much of this activity has been medical. Dental, vision and routine checkups all have to be...

2009 Spring 2 Fall

Dec 12, 2008 - Epilogue

Crossing America the easy way - Monday, December 8 Monday morning we saw the grandkids off to school, said goodbye to Viki and drove our Chevy rental car down to Fort Lauderdale. We were right at the morning commute. We found the airport and turned in the car, thinking what a poor case it made for bailing out General Motors. If it wasn’t a bad car - it wasn’t a very good one either. We were flying home on Southwest - my very favorite airline. The trip was a two flight affair, with a change of planes at Chicago’s Midway Airport. When I was...

Mar 27, 2008 - Leaving home

Every trip needs a place to begin - and this is ours. Our home. The place we leave from, full of excitement and a spirit of adventure each spring - and the place we return to months later with a priceless collection of memories and experiences. It's not that we don't like being home - we love it. But there is something magical about being on the road in a home we can take with us. Once you've experienced that kind of freedom it's hard to imagine settling down in one place for long. Life is simple on the road. Everything around us belongs to...

Jan 10, 2008 - Who says 'you can't go home'?

From December 14 2007, until January 10 2008 we 'camped' in a variety of places. A MONTH'S WORTH OF PICTURES ON ONE PAGE! From December 14 until Christmas we stayed with Viki and Andy at their home. During this time we parked the RV at the storage place in Coral Springs. When Tami and Rich came with their kids and Madolyn's mom Christmas night, we moved the motorhome to an RV Park in Pompano Beach. For the next 9 days we stayed there at night, commuting to the McCright home in Parkland to be with the family during the day. Altogether we...
