Jul 26, 2015 - California Calling

Well I won't say as we set off on our "for real" first, "part time/full time" working trip that I wasn't longing for a balance. We are at a 4-way crossroads between work/residence/camp/retirement as we headed out. We still glance at each other and smile, wondering, "are we really doing this?" We want to keep in touch while we are on the road (we already figured out we would alway miss you all, way more than you'll ever miss us) so alas "a travel blog"... Our first night out (Friday) we drove to Aurora to fill up with diesel. Then choose...

Jun 2, 2013 - Empire Gold Mine and Bourn Cottage State Park

We toured the Empire Gold Mine and the Bourn (owner of the mine) Cottage which they built for their daughter and her husband, we also visited the Historic Holbrook Hotel. The Nevada County Fairground has a wonderful statue at the entrance which Jimmie and Jeanine contributed to its construction. Empire Gold Mine - The Empire Mine was the richest hard-rock mine in the State of California producing 5.8 million ounces of gold in its operating history of 106 years (1850-1956). George Roberts, the original discoverer of the gold soon sold his...

Sep 30, 2012 - Exploring Lake Tahoe

The Celtic Festival looks like fun -- many people are dressed and it looks like thee are a lot of vendors selling Celtic music, blankets, and jewelry. It seems to be a very popular festival in this area. David is not feeling up to par yet from his cold so he will stay at the campground and not travel to Lake Tahoe. We continue another 50 miles or so in Jan and Jeff's car to Truckee. This part of the trip is all trees with large hills and deep valleys. It is also where a great tragedy occurred in the winter of 1846-1847. -- when pioneers...

Sep 29, 2012 - Lake Tahoe - here we come

Gas is a little less expensive in the interior of CA. Prices are about $3.95 -- this is better than expected. Hwy 20 will take us to Lake Tahoe. Clear Lake is a big lake that has docks high off the banks. The boats are stored high (10 to 15 feet higher than lake level). It took quite a while to circle this lake. It is a large lake, one side of the water we traveled on appeared stagnant. There are grape fields and wineries along the way. Unfortunately, we passed 2 burnt out areas along Hwy 20 and Hwy 53. Both fires looked recent. The second...

Jul 23, 2012 - More Grass Valley

Very early Monday morning, mild thunderstorms and a little rain rolled in and then around 8am some major thunderstorms and quite a downpour hit Grass Valley. This seemed to ease the warm temperatures we had over the weekend and that morning rain smell was fabulous among the pine trees. It was one of those days where we just wanted to take it easy. Jay had suggested golf, but even that seemed like it required too much energy. So I suggested bowling and that’s what we did. First, we went to Paulette’s for breakfast and then off to the bowling...

Jul 22, 2012 - Day Trip to Lake Tahoe

Today is my birthday and I wanted to go to Lake Tahoe for the day. So we started out early, as we wanted to drive to Lake Tahoe via Truckee, a small mountain town which is on the way to Lake Tahoe. The drive starts out on Hwy 20 in Grass Valley and goes about 35 miles on this windy, pine lined two lane road through the Tahoe National Forest. It’s a gorgeous drive. Then the rest of the trip to Truckee is on I-80 over Donner Pass in the Sierra Nevada Mountains at an elevation of over 7,000 feet. The ascent and descent are extremely steep and...

Jul 20, 2012 - Grass Valley, CA

We had a short drive from Auburn to Grass Valley, which was only about 40 minutes up Highway 49. Since we were last here in 2004 the highway was widened some and it was an easy drive up the mountain. Grass Valley is at the lower elevation of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and is considered the first town that grew out of the gold rush era. There are many beautiful Victorian homes here in this mining town and LOTS of history. When we lived in San Diego, we came up here quite a few times and even had a deposit on a piece of property up here...

We've been hard at work this past week (well, mostly Christian)- getting our 1977 Boler prepped and painted. The renovations continue this week with interior painting, secure bed for Azure, upholstery and flushing systems. We aim to be on the road by July 15th with our new and improved Boler. A work in progress!
