Jun 1, 2017 - Northern CA and Southern coast of Oregon

After leaving Yosemite we traveled north on RT 101. Staying in a couple of Harvest Host wineries (ah yes, for free... except for buying some wine, lol). Our last stay with the Thousand Trails organization was in the Russian River RV park. While there we went to the Napa valley having lunch and see the "Old Faithful" of California. It is a geyser that erupts frequently... far from the impressive experience of Old Faithful in Yellowstone. Also, had a brief tour to the Charles M Schultz museum in Santa Rosa. Seeing Paul Bunyan & Babe in the...

May 16, 2017 - It doesn't rain in California? Yeah, right!

Although the sunset at the Elk Cove Inn was unremarkable thanks to the clouds, the breakfast was fantastic. Eggs, sausage, cheese grits, fruit, waffles and more. We loaded up up both our tummies and the bikes and headed out in the rain to see the redwood giants. Route 101 was open luckily and the scenary was really quite nice. Eventually we found the Avenue of the Giants and were dissappointed to discover the largest tree was inaccessible due to the fact that the summer bridges had not been put in place yet but he told us how to get to the...

May 4, 2017 - Crescent City to Eureka

With only 90 miles to our next stop at Eureka we took our time leaving Crescent City and drove out at 9:30 into a heavy sea mist. The view from our window this morning was just grey mist instead of the bright blue sky from yesterday. I drove slowly as did most other drivers as the road was only one lane in each direction and visibility was not good. Within the first 12 miles we came across three sets of roadworks. In each case we had up to 5 minutes wait for a pilot vehicle which escorted us past the workers who were repairing damage caused...

Oct 17, 2016 - Trinidad,CA

We left Monday for Trinidad,Ca. It was an short drive and the weather remained unsettled but it was no longer dumping buckets. We booked into a Good Sam Campground for 2 nights and then headed to see the sites. We wanted to visit Patrick's Point State Park but decided to leave that until Tuesday as the weather was supposed to be much better by then. Monday we checked out Trinidad State Beach, not much to see or do, hiked up to the top of Trinidad Head, which had a great view of the coast from all sides and then went to Moonstone Beach to...

Jul 20, 2016 - Remember Angel, it's just an adventure!

This was the easiest travel stretch we have had so far. We took the 101 all the way from Cloverdale to Eureka, CA. Saw some beautiful redwood trees on the way. The truck had a bad shimmy so we took it to a shop in Eureka. Long story short, we had to have a wheel bearing replaced and apparently some tie rods were worn. They only had time for the wheel bearing but when Steve picked up the truck, he was in the parking lot and the truck lurched forward. His first thought was that someone backed into the truck but no one did so it was, oh no now...

Sep 3, 2015 - Eureka, California

On our way to Eureka we took a scenic detour off of Highway 101 through some more of the Redwoods. Nice to see them through the RV window which always offers a better view. In Eureka we toured an interesting place called the Blue OX Millworks. This place was run by a gentleman who had woodworking equipment and printing equipment that was over 100 years old and was still in operation. He uses the equipment to help train high school students and veterans in different skills. He was an interesting person who has a passion for helping others...

Jul 2, 2015 - While in Eureka, CA

Daily Mileage--257 Total Trip Mileage--774 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Wed. July 1--We left Napa this morning around 9 AM and drove to Eureka, CA on Route 101. I must admit I was not looking forward to the drive--I heard so many horror stories--but it wasn't that bad. Most of the drive was double lane, some single lane, and some very curvy parts with redwood trees right along side the road!! So here's what I think--It's doable, it's pretty, it's long and I probably would take an...

Jun 21, 2015 - Arcata and restful afternoon

We got ready after breakfast and drove north into Arcata to the First Baptist Church. We were warmly greeted by a couple who had originated in Spruce Grove and Carval Corner outside Edmonton. He was in the wood industry and had been transferred down here 50 years ago for three years and was still here. The Church is near the Humboldt State University and during term time about half their congregation is made up of students who attend there. They said between classes being over and members on vacation, the attendance was only a third of what...

Jun 20, 2015 - Old Eureka and Pacific Adventure

After breakfast Christine went and did laundry while I read the remainder of the material for the board meeting I will be attending in Sacramento. We had lunch then went into Eureka to the historic old town. The first building we saw was a mansion built by Carson, a lumber magnate, in 1886. It is an ornate building now used as a private club with, according to Wikipedia, a degree of controversy as it clings to its men only membership. Christine disputes this as she is sure she saw ladies at the windows on the second floor as we passed. We...

Jun 19, 2015 - Back 150 years and Changed Plans

We had breakfast and made up a picnic then discussed what we should do. We wanted to go south and there appeared two possibilities. Either go down the 101 and meander through the Avenue of the Giants, an alternative route to the 101 for about 31 miles, or go west south of Eureka towards the coast and loop back to the 101 further south. We elected for the latter and set off. It had been partly sunny as we left, but soon developed into a bright sunny day, though somewhat on the cool side at first. We drove through Ferndale and noted its...

Jun 18, 2015 - A quiet day at "Home"

We did not venture far today. We got up late, had breakfast then washed the windows. We had a walk round the campground giving Christine the opportunity to take photos, mainly of the many roses and a few other flowers that adorn the campground. This was followed by a late lunch. We sat at the table and talked and read then spoke to our daughter to learn that our youngest grandchild had tripped on a tree root at school and broken her arm. She apparently is doing well and it should heal quite quickly. This is the second time she has broken...

Jun 17, 2015 - Eureka!

We slept longer than intended this morning, either the alarm did not go off as planned or wee both slept through it. However, by the time we packed up and left we were only 10 minutes later in leaving than we had planned. We drove down the road we had covered on Saturday as far as Trinidad then the additional 20 or so miles to Eureka. As we left Crescent City we drove into fog as we rose up aver the capes that border the ocean, eventually we rose through it into sunshine, but as we descended, the fog became more dense and the road less...
