Jul 10, 2017 - El Centro, CA

Bob's Dr. appointment was on July 3rd. He's now scheduled for surgery on Oct 18th and 19th. Two surgeries because the surgeon wants to work on two different places on his spine and doing it in one surgery would mean 7 long hours of surgery. I for one don't want a tired surgeon working on my spine. So, on July 6th, we packed up and left San Bernardino, arriving in El Centro in 123 degree heat. Luckily we had electricity. We can't ever remember being in such heat. Spent 2 days there, hoping it would cool off. Met an interesting lady, Olivia,...

Mar 6, 2017 - Winter 2016-2017

I know the last entry I did was October 2016, but it is now 2017 and time for a new journal. We plan to make some changes in our lifestyle this year, so it seemed starting from scratch was the right move at this point. We have been at our winter headquarters, Rio Bend RV & Golf Resort in El Centro, CA, since last September. In my last journal entry I told you about our fabulous trip to the Ryder Cup and then the down time when we got back; the park was still pretty empty and the golf course was closed for overseeding the whole month of...

Oct 12, 2016 - Another Item on The Bucket List

We have been in El Centro, our home for the winter, since the end of September. We don’t usually come this early in the season as it is still very hot, but we had to buy airline tickets for a special trip and this seemed like the most logical spot. Our efforts to volunteer at the Ryder cup didn’t work out and we decided not to spend the money for the trip. Then about 6 weeks ago we got an offer from Chase (our credit card company) for a special deal offering tickets for all 3 days, 4 nights lodging, a reception at a local brewery,...

Apr 10, 2016 - Naval Air Facility in El Centro

We woke up to a cloudy morning here in Tucson, but optimistically we put on shorts for traveling. We knew that there was a rain storm coming into Tucson from California. There was a weather alert for flooding in San Diego. Seriously? Its just a few rain showers. Now as we get ready this morning would everything work like it was supposed too? Spike had me review the new tech manual & procedure to retract the jacks, and the to actually retract them after airing up the air bags. I closed my eyes and pushed the buttons, and said a little...

Jan 6, 2016 - FEMA says dont panic, snowbirds are safe

Wow after reading some local posts I see our beloved park under a blanket of snow. When will it stop. Hope it is short-lived for all concerned and no slipping and sliding let to any injuries. We as well just endured a overnight weather phenomena that left the area in a bit of disarray. As you can see by the picture it was quite an event. Luckily for all concerned it will be an event soon overcome. Second pix is of a new hummingbird feeder I got Randi today, little fellas are just everywhere here in El Centro. After another day of cruising...

New route 15/16

Jan 4, 2016 - Sunbeam Lake RV Resort

Good morning all. Well after 2 weeks of sitting on the ocean side it is time to move on down the road. Rig was all packed up, good byes said to friends and off we go. It was actually pretty easy day as we are only going 110 miles. We pointed the rig east and off we went. It was a good feeling in a way to leave San Diego, as nice as the city is and with all it has to offer but it was time to go. It was a long climb up to 4200 ft thru the mountain range as we headed for El Centro. As was expected the further east we went the more the price of...

Oct 23, 2015 - Change of Plans now to El Centro

Left early this morning heading to El Centro Navel Air Station, Ca. This is the home of the Navy Blue Angel's demonstration team. Not a big base, but has the basics. We were able to stop at the commissary and exchange to get what we needed. The drive was uneventful and pleasant. After setting up and shopping, we headed into town to get dinner at the Sizzler, we love their salad bar.

Mar 30, 2015 - A Tough Farewell

Believe it or not – finally an entry into the journal! I know it has been a while, but I don’t usually write much when we are parked in one spot; we have been at Rio Bend in El Centro, Ca since we returned from our trip to South Africa over the holidays. We do like it here, even though it may not be the most scenic spot in the world. The people are just great and really friendly whether they are our Canadian neighbors to the far north, fellow Americans from the northern states, or the staff from south of the border in Mexico (which is...

Jan 26, 2015 - Overnight in El Centro, CA

January 26 We left our place in the desert about 11:00am. We topped off our fuel, hoping to avoid buying any in California, and headed west, toward El Centro. Ironically, fuel was cheaper in California and that's just unheard of. Our route took us across the back roads of that part of California, on roads we'd never traveled before. The rain fell sporadically and I knew it was just making mud of all of the dust we'd collected while parked in the desert. The road took us right through the Imperial Sand Dunes. We'd only been in the edges of...

Dec 26, 2014 - Family Time in Cape Town

We have been home for a week, and I haven’t gotten down to doing a journal entry for our trip because I honestly don’t know quite where to start. We had a fabulous time touring and seeing and doing and just being together, with only a couple of little upsets; I am sure it is a trip we will all remember for a very long time. We arrived in Cape Town after a flight that took 13 hours to Istanbul, then an 8 hour layover followed by an 8 hour trip to Johannesburg, a 2 hour layover and then a 2 hour flight to our final destination. Jim had...

Nov 23, 2014 - And the Drama continues

Things here at Rio Bend RV Park have been very interesting for the past month. It seems every day things change, and then go back to the way they were only to change again. I filled you in on some of the changes in the last journal and things have gone up and down since then. We have worked for Julia each of the other 2 years we have been here in El Centro, and while she may not be the easiest to work for, Buzz and I have always gotten along with her. The new management here has done everything they can to make her quit and they finally...

Oct 26, 2014 - Our Winter Home with Some Changes

We have been here in El Centro, CA – our winter home for now – for 2 weeks and it has certainly been interesting. As usual there is new management which always has new plans and new ways of doing things, some of which seem good and some of which are nothing but trouble. Our workamping experiences have always been an exchange of hours worked in payment for our site, and some extras such as golf, vouchers for food, utilities, etc. While many workampers want to be paid, we prefer to avoid having W2’s and having to worry about our taxes. When...
