Sep 11, 2012 - Death Valley

There is a desert valley in Eastern California. It is excruciatingly hot there, not exactly a place you would ever want to visit. It's in/nearby Inyo County in California, very close to the California-Nevada border. This valley is deep inside the Mojave Desert, which has some of the hottest and driest locations in all of North America. Inside the low valley, the sun heats the air and then the mountains surrounding the valley trap the heated air down inside the valley causing such extreme and ridiculous heat. Even though the heat is extreme,...

Mar 28, 2012 - Front Sight Shotgun Classes

Monday, March 26, 2012 - First day of Shotgun class at Front Sight As before, I didn’t bother setting my alarm for O’dark thirty in the morning, but did set it for 6:30, which proved to give me plenty of time to get there and checked in before class starts. I expected that the schedule would be identical to the previous classes, and was correct. I got to the entrance gate by 7:15, checked in and had my shotgun and ammo checked, returned them to my car and then headed to the classroom, where I listened to the same lecture and signed the...

Mar 25, 2012 - March 24, 2012 - Amargosa Opera House

Saturday, March 24, 2012 - Amargosa Opera House Zack seems to be 100% now and acting normally, after a bit of a scare he gave me. Neither the vet nor I can figure out what happened, but he bounced back to his rowdy old self. The weather is windy, overcast but still warm and in the mid 70’s, so Zack and I took a little road trip. We drove all the way to California and back again, to see a place of interest off the beaten track. We visited the Amargosa Opera House in Death Valley Junction, California. I had seen it in some travel log on a...

Feb 7, 2012 - Death Valley National Park

On our way to California we stopped off to visit Death Valley, we had never been there, we were really amazed at the color variations we saw. We stayed near Death Valley Junction, California. Death Valley Junction which was bought the whole town, by Marta Becket a Ballerina and Opera singer. The Amargosa Hotel and Opera House are the show piece. Marta renovated the inside of the Opera House, performed on weekends, when no one attended, she painted the audience (she is also an accomplish artist). Word got around and people started coming....

Jan 24, 2012 - Las Vegas - Ethel M's Chocolates

Our long time friends from Worldwide Marriage Encounter Steve and Lynn McCourt were visting Las Vegas and we spent the day with them, touring EthelMs Chocolate Factory in Henderson. The factory was named after the mother of the Mars Candy founders. Their chocolates are good but a little pricey. We walked around the cactus garden that we visited during Christmas, what a difference it made seeing the lights at night and then seeing the garden during the day. We drove to the Pawn Shop featured on the History Channel's "Pawn Stars". Steve and...

Mar 9, 2011 - Death Valley-Furnace Creek

Feb 3, 2010 - LA to Death Valley

We are now now heading east and, like Australia, we are struggling to grasp the scale of this continent. We drove from LA via the San Fernando valley and Antelope Valley, the latter of which has a whole load of fascinating stories to tell. It is a huge flat landscape, further than the eye can see in each direction, making it ideal for many aviation 'firsts' - Landing of the space shuttle Columbia 'Fastest man on earth' first to break the sound barrier Testing of many aircraft, including the B2 and the Stealth. Location of the first...

Nov 16, 2007 - Death Valley

We took a side trip to Death Valley today. The weather was nice and sunny (82 degrees). This is a good time of year to visit, as it gets up to the 120's in the summer. Badwater is the place where the lowest point in Death valley is located. If you look closely at photo #2, you can just see the sea level sign at the very top of the picture, 282 ft above Jeanne's head. Dante's View is several thousand feet directly above Badwater, so photo #4 is taken from there, down towards Badwater. Lots of wide open spaces and not much else...There really...
