Jul 10, 2012 - Home in Davis

There was good news and bad news when we went to the warehouse in Lincoln to pick up our wall sculpture. The good news was that they had happened to save the original packing box for the wall hanging. The bad news was that the box measured 92" X 64". No way that we could get it inside of the R.V. It was even to big to consider tying it on top. Luckily, we found a local freight company willing to ship it home for us but we couldn't get it insured. So fingers crossed we watched them load it up and headed home to Davis ourselves. To our relief...

Jun 26, 2012 - Moved out to the Skydance Skydiving dropzone at Yolo county airport

Moved out to the Skydance Skydiving dropzone at Yolo County Airport on Tuesday June 26th, the day after the house closed. Mike has been a partime pilot and skydiving out there for 12 years or so. Spent 10 days out there camping until we FINALLY got everything settled with the house and storage units !! We promised our Realtor, Don Sharp, and his wife Martha tandem jumps if they got us a full price offer and closed! They did! Don went, Martha decided to do an observer ride instead! Several mornings we had balloons launching right next to the...

Aug 6, 2009 - Two more statistics

I realized we left out a couple of interesting statistics: Number of states In six weeks, we traveled through 24 states – half of the Lower 48. Some were mere drive throughs. If we were going for pure numbers, there were several other states, like Kentucky, just the other side of the river from where we were staying in Indiana, that we easily could have visited. Instead, we savored the brief time we had in each area. Scott fell short on his goal to capture a Geocache in each state. We found 22 caches in 18 states. Time or lack of Internet...

Aug 4, 2009 - The final count

BY THE NUMBERS Lodging We were very budget minded on this trip, but it still turned out to be more expensive than we planned. We camped one quarter of the time, stayed for free with friends or points for another quarter of the time, and paid for hotel rooms half of the time. Cost for all lodging: $1,720 Average paid hotel room price (2 doubles or 2 queens), including tax: $71.45 Of our 42 nights: 9 tent camping 2 cabin camping 25 in hotels (4 free from points) 6 free nights with friends or family Choice Hotels (which had the best summer...

Aug 4, 2009 - Best and worst

I mentioned yesterday that this blog entry would be about statistics and money. I changed course. That will be tomorrow. Today is a “best of” and “worst of” edition. Favorite meal: Barbecue pulled pork and chicken at Super Smokers in Eureka, Mo. In the Midwest, barbecue is a noun, not a verb, and it's served with a bunch of sweet or spicy sauces. New favorite dessert: Frozen custard, which is thicker and richer than soft serve, basically the opposite of fat-free frozen yogurt. Favorite hotel: Sleep Inn in Winchester, Va. It had everything,...

Aug 1, 2009 - Klamath Falls, Ore., to Davis, Cal.

The trip ended today. It’s been 43 days and 42 nights (6 weeks, one day). We left the Thom house a little after 9, but wasted more than a half-hour driving through Klamath Falls, Ore., looking for gas. The van was near empty. We were bummed that it couldn’t wait until California. Oregon’s mandatory full-service gas is more costly. We hoped to stop at Lava Beds National Monument on our way home. The detour and visit would have added hours to our day. It would have meant getting home after dinner. The family voted no. We stopped at Castle...

May 7, 2009 - Farmers Market

Did a few errands in the morning and then went to Davis for the Wednesday evening Farmers Market. It was okay. It's held in a park in the middle of town - the town is the home of UC Davis. A California college town - enough said! Bought some strawberries- huge and sweet. Lots of interesting foods - Indian, Thai, and Vegan.

May 13, 2008 - Service Day

We're in Davis, California and today is service day - the motorhome and car are getting oiled, lubed and filter changes. They are also working on the slide one more time before the warranty expires. Gene and I have both had haircuts while waiting on the cars. What more do we need? We hope to head into Sacremento today after all of our repairs and perhaps ride the American River Bike Trail which is 23 miles along a meandering river. After that we plan to head for Lake Tahoe before driving the eastern side of California to Mono Lake and...

Feb 13, 2008 - We finally bought the travel trailer!!

Well...we left beautiful St. Croix on February 1st...bummer! We loved the island but we had other things on our to do list. We have left going back to the "Island Life" as a definite possibility!! We loved the Island!!We had planned on buying the trailer in Reno but the model we wanted had already been sold by the time we got there. We finally found the trailer via the internet, only to discover that it was too heavy for the truck. We had to pick a little smaller trailer with a different floor plan but we managed to keep the king size...

Dec 6, 2007 - Booted out of Davis

Thursday December 7, 2007 We had a visit from the Davis Community Code Enforcement Officer yesterday morning. She told us that we could not have our camper sticking out onto the sidewalk. Everything else was okay; we could be in the driveway, we could have our blue wagon attached, but we could not be sticking out onto the sidewalk. Well, I guess it's my fault for buying a camper that's too long!!! Soooo, we're gonna have to move out of Davis. We tried to negotiate a stay for a couple more days, but it might get Kate into trouble. We took...

It's in the Doing!

Dec 1, 2007 - Davis/Sacramento

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 30, 2007 We have been in Davis for a week now. We had been unable to secure parking at either Sacramento church or the Davis church. Thankfully, we were welcomed by Kate Raymond, the DRE of the Davis church. She offered to let us stay at her house. We camped out on the street next to her house. In Davis, we've been to the library, biked the bike path, walked the bike path, drove into Sac to go to the Capitol building and also so Aisha could go with Kristen and Vaughn to see "Into the Wild." She had read the book and was...
