May 19, 2014 - Coloma, CA

May 19, 2014 This morning we left our rigs at the Winery and drove our toad back to Coloma. It was a more pleasant drive on CA 49 in our small car rather than in the coach the previous day. We toured the Visitor’s Center at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park and saw the movie. The Visitor’s Center is quite small but they offered 5 separate movies. We saw the one about the discovery of gold. We saw the old jail, St. John’s Catholic Church, Post Office, Marshall’s Monument, the replica of the saw mill and the actual site, on the...

Apr 16, 2014 - Following the Gold Trail

We traveled north following the trail of the 49'ers. We stayed on the American River just outside of Marshall Gold Discovery Park. This is where it all started. James W. Marshall found shining flecks of gold in the tailrace of the sawmill he was building for himself and John Sutter. This discovery in 1848 changed the course of California's and the nation's history. The town of Coloma has preserved many of the original buildings and is in the process of recreating the sawmill on the original spot. I can understand why people flocked to...

We're back in what my mother use to call God's Country! She loved the rolling hills of El Dorado County, especially in the spring! We're parked at the Ponderosa Thousand Trails RV Park. It's a beautiful little park right outside the Gold Discovery site in Coloma! It's been nice seeing family and friends. We'll be here for another couple of weeks! Hope we get to see those of you in the area before we start heading north! Life is good, hope you're making the very most of yours!

On The Road Again

Oct 24, 2009 - Trip 14: Coloma Resort, Coloma, CA

This resort is across a one lane bridge and is along the American river. The River side sites tend to fill up fast and do not have sewer. We spent an agonizing amount of time deciding if we were too spoiled for navy showers and could stay on the river, or we wanted full hookups. We decided on a spot next to the grass park, that was very roomy, had full hookups and we could see the river from the rear window. It turned out to be a good idea, as the river sites almost all filled up (we are in September now) and we only had a person on our...

Jun 12, 2009 - Coloma, Gold Country

Departed from Yosemite Lakes around midday headed for Ponderosa Resort some 160 miles to the north. An endless series of hair raising drops, twists and turns and long and windey climbs made for an uneasy journey as we snaked along route 49 into the gold country. Our campsite sits on the American river very close to the site where the first Gold was accidentally discovered triggering the largest human exodus of all time, the California gold rush of 1849. The 49ers came from all over the world as well as America, even some Cornish miners...

May 16, 2009 - Lake Tahoe to Coloma

Saturday, May 16, 2009 - Best Laid Plans - South Lake Tahoe to Coloma Sleeping in the cool mountain air is truly an enjoyment after being in the hot climate for so long. I got up at 8:30, had my morning coffee and then planned the days ahead. I had planned on staying until Monday, and enjoying the weather and car show, but due to having less than a quarter of a tank of gas to run the generator, plus two full waste tanks and one empty fresh water tank, I decided I should move down to my home resort at Coloma. I had planned on making a...

Mar 5, 2009 - After the Fly-in

Wednesday, February 11, 2009 - The weather is pleasant and warmer than the past few days, so I am enjoying it while I can. A rainstorm is predicted for this weekend and it is supposed to be much cooler than normal. My plan is to give Zack a shower and finish packing the car for a trip to my sister’s in Laguna Beach for a few days. I left a lot later than I had planned, but wanted to make sure everything was done correctly and I wasn’t forgetting any thing. I am leaving Zoey here for the few days I’ll be gone, as I think she is happier in...

Mar 5, 2009 - Up to date

Monday, March 2, 2009 - I didn’t sleep as well as usual and because of that and the cool warm breeze of the morning, I slept in, drifting in and out of short periods of sleep. Zack got up to go out and I just left the motor home door open so he could return at will. Zoey went out and came back in to jump on me while I caught one of the brief sleep periods, and Zack joined us. We all laid in bed, watching the birds at the lakes’ edge until getting up for the last time at 9:45. I don’t know where my ambition has gone, but I feel less like...

Mar 4, 2009 - The Fly-in

Thursday, January 22, 2009 – Salton Sea, First day of the fly-in. Many of the registered pilots and vendors showed up and my friend, Michael, from West Virginia arrived. I had offered to share my motor home with him to make the expense of coming a bit easier on him. He got settled in the motor home and then got his motor and equipment, which he had shipped to another friend, and we put it together. When we finished it, several of us went out to dinner to a new restaurant that recently opened in the area. After returning to the RV, we...

Dec 31, 2008 - Arcata to Sacramento (Coloma), California & Christmas Eve

Tuesday, December 23, 2008 – Arcata to Coloma We had a leisurely morning and got ready to head towards Sacramento. My brother was going to spend Christmas with friends and his son, Levi, in Sacramento, and I had reservations at my home resort in Coloma, which is a couple of miles from Placerville, where my daughter, Darcy, lives. He had a few errands to run before we left and as a results we didn’t leave until almost 3 PM. We loaded up his two dogs and their four puppies, as he has a pair of Lhasa apso that he breeds and sells the...

Nov 19, 2008 - Gold!

It has been awhile since I shared some history with you and I can't think of a better way to get re-started then by sharing the story of Sutters Mill and the Marshall gold discovery site with you. This story starts with a man named John Sutter. Sutters parents were Swiss citizens who were living in Germany at the time of his birth in 1803. He would be educated in Swiss schools and attempt to make a living in that country. Unfortunately by 1834 he had incurred such debts that his only oppourtunity for success was in the "New World". He...
