Jan 10, 2017 - Running from the storm

The big rain storm was still upon us. We drove south more hoping to at some point outrun it. We drove for 6 hours about 300 miles. We turned off Hwy 101 and turned right onto CA 20 along the Eel River. This river at the time was making headlines nationwide for its flooding. This rain is epic. There are lakes that have gained 25 feet in five days. We were going to drive another part of the Redwoods called Avenue of the Giants but it was closed. We saw evidence of flooding. The Eel River was WAY over its flood stage. Part of the road had a...

Oct 31, 2012 - Lake Place Resort...

I think I mentioned in one of my last posts about the difficulty we had in finding a convenient place to camp while visiting my aunt & uncle in Clearlake Oaks, California. We knew that facilities in the area were limited and eventually decided to stay about 5 miles outside of town in the small community of Glenhaven. We found a lovely small RV park right on the lake, and even though we really didn't spend much time on the property, I thought I'd share a couple of pics in case you get into this area. The property has 5 RV spots as well as a...

Oct 30, 2012 - Family Pics...

I took a few family pics while in Brookings so decided to share just a few today. Wow, the granddaughters are really growing up fast. And like many of you with grandchildren, we think ours are sooooooo smart, beautiful & super intelligent! Well, they are....LOL We had such a nice time visiting with them for the week and hope to make it back again soon. Three years in between visits is entirely too long! We arrived in Ely, Nevada yesterday about 5:30pm but more on that later. I sure hate the drive between Reno and here! Mom looks great & it...

Oct 27, 2012 - 101 Southbound Continued...

Not much more to say about the drive down 101 South that I didn't say in my last post so I'll dummy up about it! We've really enjoyed the past three days with all of my family. I can't believe it's time to move on again tomorrow. We plan to drive into Reno & sure hope the weather holds out. Looks like it's fine as of today. It's almost midnight so guess I better get these pics up & hit the sack. Thanks for checking in...

Oct 26, 2012 - Clearlake, California...

We arrived safely in Clearlake Oaks, California yesterday. We decided to take 101 South to 20 East rather than driving 1-5 across. Not sure if that was the best way or not as 101 South requires total driver concentration at all times. It is a very pretty drive but the speed limit varies from 25-55mph, 30-35mph most of the time, so it's a slow go. And it was raining a good bit of the way on Wednesday on the first half of our journey. Another consideration if any of you are considering making this particular trip is the lack of open...

Aug 8, 2009 - Clear Lake CA

We left Sacramento Saturday and drove as far as Clear Lake where we camped at an Indian reservation campground right on the lake. Not too many amenities but a great view. We walked to the Boathouse Bar and Restaurant for dinner passing the Featherbed B&B on the way. The restaurant's food is ok but we ate on the patio while a singer entertained us with his guitar and electronic backup equipment. All in all, delightful. The B&B is unique in that all of its "rooms" are cabooses, each decorated in a theme. The proprietors left the wilds of...

May 9, 2009 - The Build

Our 2 weeks at the Habitat build is over. As before, it was a super experience with a bunch of like-minded fun-to-be-with people. It’s kind of like going to camp – where you are all in the same boat and become fast friends. This build was different for me in that I actually did some building – framing, fascia, soffits. At last year’s Vero Beach, FL build – we were working on many houses and I ended up doing the final touches to 2 houses – lots of painting and detail work. This one I pounded nails and never once hit my fingers – a major...

Apr 29, 2009 - Habitat build - Clearlake, CA

Arrived in Clearlake, CA for our Habitat build on Saturday. Gave us lots of time to get to know everyone as we didn't start the build until Tuesday. There are 10 RVs - 2 with single males (wives at home) and 8 with couples. Bob and I are almost the youngest - we think the oldest is 78 - alot of old farts !!!!!! Two of the couples are "full-timers" - one of those spends at least half the year doing builds all over the country - they've done somewhere around 25 houses. The rest are from the west - we're the only from eastern side of USA In...
